Synthetic weed tainted with rat poison has made its way to Milwaukee and it’s been linked to at least three illnesses in the city in 24 hours. Dr. Jon Meiman with the state health department says the effects of the fake drug can be “unpredictable,” with side effects ranging from nausea to seizures and even death. "The synthetic cannabinoids that we're seeing here are causing severe bleeding, and that's very unusual,” Meiman said. The synthetic pot can be found at gas stations and other convenience stores sold under names like K2 or Spice. The drug is meant to minim the effects of marijuana but can be far more dangerous. "They work on the same parts of the brain that marijuana does, but they can have very different effects depending on the specific chemicals," Meiman said. The health department says it’s sent two people to the hospital in Milwaukee. In nearby Chicago, the poison-laced product is linked to three deaths. Health officials are trying to trace the source of the rat poison-synthetic pot.  1061

TEMECULA, Calif. (KGTV) -- Border Patrol agents arrested a man Sunday after discovering more than 0,000 worth of drugs hidden inside his SUV. According to Border Patrol, agents spotted a man in a Ford Expedition swerving in and out of lanes on I-15 near Temecula around 11:15 Sunday. A short distance later, agents stopped the man and questioned the driver when the agency says a K-9 alerted agents that there may be drugs inside the vehicle. After a search, agents discovered six bundles of cocaine and two bundles of black tar heroin inside a panel behind the driver’s side rear-quarter panel. Another search at a nearby station revealed eight more bundles of cocaine and two more bundles of the heroin. The value of the cocaine is estimated to have a street value of 4,000 and the heroin’s value is estimated at ,700. The 39-year-old man, who agents say is a U.S. citizen, was arrested for possession of narcotics. Since the beginning of October 2018, agents have seized 865 pounds of cocaine and 2,648 ounces of heroin. 1041

TERRACE PARK, Ohio -- Fourth graders at Terrace Park Elementary School will receive national recognition this week for their efforts to help students in hurricane-affected Puerto Rico.Charlotte Buccholz's class is working with Destination Imagination, a nonprofit that challenges young people to explore their talents in fields including tech, science, engineering and community service. "We had a bunch of different ideas on how to do things and then we had to all agree on something," 9-year-old Buccholz said. They ultimately decided they wanted to focus on service -- specifically service to the people affected by Hurricane Maria."We were thinking about people who weren't getting much attention, and so we thought about Puerto Rico because it wasn't getting much help," student Tyler Graham said.Graham, Buccholz and their classmates created and sold clay 'Te Amo' ornaments to benefit The Juanita Garcia Peraza School in San Juan, eventually raising nearly ,500. They used the money to buy school supplies and other essential items for third-graders on the island. It's a simple idea with a big impact, and it caught the attention of Destination Imagination organizers. The fourth-graders will present their project at the nonprofit's global finals this week."We wanted to help the kids because we wouldn't want to be in that position," student Saura Patel said. 1398

TENINO, Wash. – George Washington’s face may be on U.S. currency, but never on money quite like this.“We've created our own,” said Wayne Fournier, mayor of Tenino, Washington. It’s a town of about 2,000 people, halfway between Seattle and Portland. Using a printing press from the 19th century, Tenino is now printing its own form of currency, made of thin pieces of wood.“We're growing money on trees here,” Mayor Fournier said. “Literally.”It’s called “complimentary currency” or “scrip.” Here’s how it works: using ,000 from the general fund, the city is backing the wooden notes, 400 of them in all, and giving them to town residents in need.“We issue it out to people that have been affected by the pandemic and qualify financially,” Mayor Fournier said. “They can receive up to 0 a month.”In turn, people can spend the wooden money, but only in town, at businesses that signed up to participate in the program. Those businesses can then redeem the wooden money back at City Hall for real U.S. dollars.“I thought it was a really good idea,” said Juan Martinez, of Don Juan’s Mexican Kitchen in Tenino. The restaurant has been around for eight years, but the pandemic affected its bottom line and that of people in town, too. So far, though, the wooden money is getting around.“I've had quite a few people come in and, you know, they hadn't gone out to dinner in a while because they were laid off of work,” Martinez said, “and when they got it, had a few people come in and enjoy lunch with their families and were able to pay with the wooden money.”It’s a currency circulation that the mayor wants to keep going.“The whole idea is just to keep money bouncing around the community,” he said. The town has done this before, back in the 1930s, during the Great Depression.“It was a big hit and it saved the city at the time,” Mayor Fournier said. It’s an old lifeline they hope will keep working again in a new era.City leaders say they have been fielding calls from as far away as Spain, New Zealand and Japan from people interested in their wooden money. They say, so far, the U.S. Treasury Department has not contacted them about their wooden money program. 2177
