LEMON GROVE, CALIF. (KGTV) - Lemon Grove’s financial issues have some in city hall talking about bankruptcy or disincorporation.The city says if action is not taken to correct their budget deficit, it will eat into reserve funds that they cannot afford to lose.Lemon Grove City Council voted against increasing its sales tax last month which would have added almost two million dollars to their yearly general fund.An identical discussion occurred in 2010 when the then City Council was asked to consider a tax measure on the ballot and it was denied.“I don’t think they’re qualified to run a lemonade stand,” said Brent Johnson, a Lemon Grove resident, “I don’t understand why people spend so much money on frivolous things.”Lemon Grove has already outsourced its law enforcement to the San Diego County Sheriff’s Department and if the city was disincorporated its remaining governmental responsibilities would go the county.“I think it should be the county’s turn to run things here” said another resident Doug Hutton, “things could get better here.”The city maintains they are not considering disincorporation or bankruptcy right now, but a decision will have to be made in the next 4 to 7 years.Only 17 cities in the history of California have been disincorporated. 1277

LITTLETON, Colo. — In one Colorado neighborhood, life is quiet, which makes what happened last Sunday hard to understand for many residents.A man named Scott Smith was arrested after claiming that his wife, Kanokwan Smith, tried to kill him with a butcher knife in their Littleton home. In an affidavit detailing the incident, he said he had no choice but to shoot and kill her. As of Sunday evening, Scott had not been charged in connection to the case and he is not in custody.For neighbor Dominique Naylor, who has known Kanokwan for more than a decade, the pain is unbearable. She said she was a hard worker and juggled three jobs."She’ll never be able to wrap her arms around her little girl again and he shouldn’t have that right," Naylor said. "He shouldn’t be out and he shouldn’t be free."She said there's not a question in her mind that Scott killed her, and other neighbors and friends agree, adding that Scott "wasn't the kind of person you ever wanted to see (Kanokwan) with."She said anybody who knew her friend knows she wouldn't hurt a fly."It just seems so unfair to live in a world that doesn’t have her in it because she’s just so kind and worked so hard and how could anyone hurt her?" LAS VEGAS, Nevada — Dencil Gold, a father of three from Las Vegas, has never been into sports, let alone the game of hockey.But this year, all that changed.“It’s like the perfect storm in a perfect community,” Gold said, “and everybody loves it.”He’s describing the hockey fever surrounding the Las Vegas Golden Knights.From the oversized Knights jersey draped over the Statue of Liberty replica outside the ‘New York, New York’ hotel and casino, to the well wishes on the marquees, to the giant-sized chocolate sculpture of star goalie Marc-Andre Fleury, hockey is the talk of the town.The Las Vegas Golden Knights are an NHL expansion team; it’s in its inaugural year, and few expected them to do well. Vegas Sports Book locations had their odds at clinching the Stanley Cup at 500-to-1.That was months ago. Now, they’re just one round away from the finals.“This is really special,” Gold said as he looks out over a packed house on a recent Thursday morning to watch the team practice.But it’s not even about their enormous and almost unrivaled success as a first year team.The Knights' very first home game ever took place just nine days after, and just down the street, from one of the most horrific mass shootings the country has ever seen. The city was in mourning. What this team represents is hope in the face of evil.“We were hurting as a community, and [these team members] were hurting as people,” Gold said. “All of a sudden none of that mattered. We were all in this together.”He can point to the exact moment he became a fan of the Golden Knights. It was during the opening ceremony at that first game, when emotions were still raw. The Knights put together a tribute to the 58 people who lost their lives, and the players, often considered heroes in their own right, escorted the “everyday heroes” of that fateful night, doctors, nurses, and first responders, out onto the ice.“It was a very moving and touching moment,” Gold said. “It was just like ‘Oh my God, this is really special.’”Golden Knights’ defenseman Deryk Engelland then skated to the center of the rink and took the microphone.“To the families and friends of the victims,” Engelland said, “know that we’ll do everything we can to help you and our city heal.”The crowd erupted into cheers before his closing line.“We are Vegas strong,” said Engelland.“The city was just trying to find a way to come together,” said mom of two Melanie Samaniego. “I think it brought something positive into the city in a time of mourning when people were really feeling low and sad and kind of lost.”Samaniego was also watching the Knights practice on this weekday morning, and admitted that, as Gold has done, she too has taken her kids out of school to be at these practices.“This doesn’t happen every day,” she said,  smiling. “I’ve never seen this kind of reaction to any team brought into this city.”Her daughter has even started playing hockey, mimicking the moves of the standout goalie.In the locker room after practice, Fleury, asked whether he thinks their success is helping people heal after an unthinkable tragedy, he demurred but said that if their games can help take people’s minds off something horrible even for “a few nights a week” and cheer for their home team, then “we did a little bit of good for the community.”Samaniego, beaming from ear to ear, summed it up with one sentence.“I don’t think anything more positive could have come out of this.”Chris Welch is a national correspondent for The E.W. LA JOLLA, Calif. (KGTV) – Two people were found dead and two others were taken to the hospital after a fire tore through a La Jolla home early Monday morning.San Diego Fire-Rescue Department officials said the fire was reported at around 3:45 a.m. at a home in the 2500 block of Caminito La Paz, near La Jolla Parkway.Responding firefighters worked to douse the two-alarm blaze but the flames completely destroyed the home’s second floor.A fire official at the scene told ABC 10News the roof was “gone” after the home essentially “closed in.” By 6 a.m., crews were able to enter the home’s first floor through a side entrance.As flames engulfed the house, a man and his daughter were able to escape. The man suffered unspecified burn-related injuries and was taken to the hospital. The injured man's daughter accompanied him to the hospital, but there is no word on if she sustained any injuries.Two people were unaccounted for after the fire erupted. A family member told ABC 10News the two missing people were an 80-year-old grandfather and the injured man's other daughter, who had autism and was non-verbal.At around 9 a.m., firefighters inside the home recovered two bodies presumed to be the two missing people.Neighbor Pat Nissan, who lives on the same street, was concerned after learning two people were missing.“There was screaming and yelling. I started hearing glass breaking,” Nissan told ABC 10News.Family members said the home was occupied by the man, grandfather, and the man’s two daughters.The cause of the fire is under investigation. 1561

LINDA VISTA, Calif. (KGTV) - Survivors of violent sexual predators gathered today to protest the release of convicted sex offender Alan Earl James. They put up posters in the restaurant where they held the rally which said, “We don’t want a rape whistle, we want change” and “You care more about the rapist than you do the victim.”James was convicted of felony sex crimes on minors in 1981 and 1986 and sentenced to 28 years in state prison. A judge has recommended his release, but his survivor Robert Nabors says he should stay behind bars. Nabors said, “He will re-offend if he gets out. He did it once before. They gave him a slap on the wrist for raping me, and when he got out, he raped two other girls.”His placement hearing is tomorrow. If he’s released, he’ll be placed in Jacumba Hot Springs community. The people there protest his arrival. 858
