SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — Hotels hit hard by the coronavirus are getting a reprieve thanks to Labor Day weekend, as tourists snatch up rooms along our coast.Elvin Lai, who owns Pacific Beach's Ocean Park Inn, says he's pretty much booked with premium rates. And, for the first time this summer, he's getting calls from overbooked hotel managers needing to find rooms for overflow guests. "I think people are just saying, I've got to get out, I don't care how long the drive is, let's just go," Lai said. Lai said resort-centric hotels like his are make-or-break during the summer, so it hit particularly hard when the coronavirus led to mass cancellations. Making matters worse, Lai had just spent million upgrading the hotel's 71 rooms."It was just like, boom! Uppercut to the chin," Lai said. "I couldn't plan for it. I couldn't forecast it. There was no model to look at."Now, he's in for a different challenge, because his hotel is understaffed, and he says he is struggling to fill positions. So, come Tuesday, Lai said he will not have the capability to make every room available for a quick turnaround.Additionally, multiple vacation rental hosts told ABC 10News that they are fully booked for the holiday weekend,Overall, occupancy remains down. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Family members are mourning the COVID-related death of an Olympic gold medalist and lifelong San Diegan.More than 4 decades ago, Arnie Robinson Jr. stood at the top of the Olympic podium."He was always so driven and so focused," said Arnie Robinson Jr.'s son, PaulPaul says his father first started feeling sick in mid-November."Labored breathing, coughing," said Paul.Robinson Jr. tested positive for coronavirus but after a week and a half, he started feeling better. A week later, on December 2, he was with a caregiver at this Skyline Hills home."Out of the blue, he struggled to take breaths," said Paul.That day, Robinson Jr. passed away at his home at the age of 72."You’re just in a state of shock and disbelief over how it happened," said Paul.It was disbelief and grief over a father and local sports legend.A high school track star at Morse High, Robinson Jr. went to San Diego Mesa College and San Diego State University, before winning a bronze medal in the long jump at the 1972 Olympics and a gold medal at the 1976 Olympics in Montreal."I think that’s one of the things that drove him. Wanting to achieve something really, really big ... setting it out there and making it happen," said Paul.That commitment was his calling card. He served in the Army and later, worked a track coach at Mesa College for three decades.In 2004, he was diagnosed with brain cancer, a grade 4 glioblastoma and given six months to live. He went through several round of chemo and radiation."After some research, a complete 180 on his diet. Looking back on it now, he saw it as another challenge," said Paul.Some 16 years later, he was in remission when he tested positive for COVID-19. Paul believes he contracted it from one of his caregivers, who also tested positive.His message to others: wear masks and take every precaution."Respect COVID for what it is. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Dozens of voters were left off the roster at a San Diego County polling place on Election Day, leading to frustration and delays.The problem was reported Tuesday morning at Pacific Trails Middle School at 5975 Village Center Loop Rd in Carmel Valley.Poll workers received an incomplete roster which omitted 46 names, Registrar of Voters Michael Vu confirmed. The list was missing two and a half pages.YOUR VOICE YOUR VOTE: 10News?Election CoverageVoters waited for voting officials to reprint another roster and deliver it to the polling place.Officials tried to ease the long line by calling the Registrar of Voters and getting approval for each person over the phone, a voter told 10News.Voters also had the option of voting provisionally, but many of them declined, telling 10News they wanted their votes to count. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Driving on roads in San Diego during the holiday season can be a headache, as residents and tourists alike deal with increased traffic caused by extra congestion. This year, during Thanksgiving week, the roads have been a little bit safer, according to statistics released by the California Highway Patrol. San Diego County DUI arrests and auto fatalities were both down from last year, for the time period between Wednesday at 6:00 p.m. and Friday at 6:00 a.m. Going into the weekend there have been a total of 21 DUI arrests recorded in San Diego, a decrease from 27 arrests from 2017. RELATED: Check 10News?traffic updatesThe results are also reflected across the state, where the 294 DUI arrests are down from 386 a year ago. There have been no fatal car accidents in San Diego, compared to one at this time last year. Across the state there were 17 car accidents resulting in death, compared to 19 in 2017. The CHP reports that of the 13 fatalities that occurred in their jurisdiction, five were not wearing seat belts.  1142

Or if you've chosen to support the Chargers, StubHub Center?A newly published analysis by ESPN's Outside the Lines investigated thousands of food-safety inspection reports from health departments that monitor professional sports venues across the U.S.The analysis looks at routine inspection reports from 2016 to 2017.According to ESPN, about 28 percent of the venues registered high-level violation in half or more of their food service outlets. The violations cover temperature, pests or bugs, poor condition of food, equipment failures, employee-related issues, and more.The study's worst is in Charlotte, N.C., where Spectrum Center — home of the NBA's Charlotte Hornets — posted a 92 percent violation rate, followed by Michigan's now-closed Palace of Auburn Hills (86.11 percent), and Texas' American Airlines Center (83.08 percent.)The highest rated stadium was Oakland's Oracle Arena — home of the NBA's Golden State Warriors— with a 1.12 percent violation rate.Petco ParkSan Diego's downtown ballpark ranked fifth among MLB venues and 24th among all venues analyzed by ESPN.Of the park's 168 outlets inspected, 28 recorded high-level violations, according to ESPN's study. The study found the park registered on average 0.09 high-level violations per inspections.Some of those violations, for example, including pest-related issues— two of which occurred in 2016 inspections. On Aug. 18, 2016, an inspector found bird droppings on top of an ice bin and on Sept. 20, 2016, rodent droppings were discovered on the floor and top of a concession stand's ice machine. We are confident that our ballpark will continue to be one of the safest in all of baseball, as evidenced by ESPN’s published rankings today," the statement read.StubHub CenterThe home of the Los Angeles Chargers came in seventh in the NFL and 22 among all venues in ESPN's study.Of the venue's 39 outlets inspected, 6 recorded high-level violations, the study says, and 0.06 violations per inspection, on average.Some of the violations recorded included employees not properly wearing hair restraints on July 15, 2017, and food not properly protected from contamination on April 29, 2017, the study says.In a statement to 10News from Levy, hospitality partner at StubHub Center, the company noted their violations compare "highly favorably" to the average number of violations at any restaurant:“We welcome the local Los Angeles County health department and employ third-party sanitation experts to ensure a safe environment for our guests. Any time a concern is identified, we immediately correct it and welcome the health department to return to confirm that we are in full compliance.
