"They are two and four years old and I'm not going to sit back and allow them not to eat."Crowell says she takes the virus very seriously - and that she dipped into her savings to make her salon COVID safe and keep the lights on. But those efforts are still not enough for the governor's new shutdown order, which says salons must close as ICU capacity continues to decrease.And other than two clients rescheduling, Crowell says she's completely booked."I want you to always love the person you see in the mirror, and I think mental health is a huge, huge issue," she said.Meanwhile, the county has served nearly 30 restaurants, bars, gyms and religious organizations with cease and desist orders since the shutdown took effect Monday. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- Dozens of workers are racing to finish construction of the San Diego Zoo Safari Park's newest exhibit, "Walkabout Australia".It is scheduled to open to the public Friday, May 25. Monday, 10News was the first station invited for a behind-the-scenes tour. The various habitats are meant to reflect the deserts, plains, and rainforests of Australia.But the heart of the exhibit is a large open area in which 20 kangaroos and wallaby will be able to roam free with Safari Park guests."I think that the public will feel like there's virtually no barriers almost on the walkway going up and when they get inside. They're just going to have so much fun," said San Diego Zoo architect Robyn Badger.Zookeepers have been working with the animals before the exhibit opens, getting them comfortable with their new habitat and with being around humans.The kangaroos and wallaby are likely to approach guests on the path. If it happens, guests are asked to stay calm and avoid harassing the animals.While people are not encouraged to reach out to touch the animals first, if the animals make contact, it is okay to gently pet them."If you're calm and you're respectful of those animals, they're absolutely going to want to come and see what you're up to," said Animal Care Manager Steve Metzler.Other animals at Walkabout Australia include tree kangaroos, magpie geese, and cassowary. 1398

The City of San Diego is inviting residents to donate big items at a recycling event Saturday. Disposal services will be available at SDCCU Stadium in Mission Valley from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. City of San Diego residents can drop off appliances, furniture, electronics, televisions, and other bulky belongings. Smaller recyclable items including batteries and light bulbs will also be accepted. Goodwill Industries of San Diego County and Urban Corps of San Diego will accept items and mattresses. The donation and recycling event is part of the Clean SD initiative to reduce illegal dumping. 707

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- Father Joe's Villages hosted two Thanksgiving meal services Wednesday for homeless residents in San Diego, but perhaps no one was more thankful than the people who helped prepare the food.Three chefs-in-training in the Father Joe’s Culinary Arts Program spent days preparing the turkey dinner, which was served to an estimated 2,300 to 2,600 people.“They changed my life by far,” student Brian Anziano said of Father Joe’s.Anziano said he got involved in “stupid stuff” last year that left him homeless, but at the suggestion of friend, he began turning his life around with the help of Father Joe’s.Anziano enrolled in the 15-week culinary course, considered the most rigorous of the 10 workforce development programs offered by Father Joe’s.“They buy your shoes, they buy your pants, they buy your uniform,” he said. “Everything you need.”The massive Thanksgiving meal is kind of like a midterm, said Culinary Arts Program instructor chef Theresa Fields.“We work 14 hour days, 16 hour days. We’re always on call,” said student Lister Lane with a smile.Lane said his dream is to graduate and open his own restaurant. “And I want to give back to the homeless like they helped me,” he said.Past graduates have gone from these kitchens to jobs at Kansas City Barbeque, PETCO Park, the Hard Rock Hotel, Amplified Ale Works and more, FIelds said.Father Joe’s said about 80 students have graduated from its various workforce training programs so far, and they’re on pace to graduate about 100 students by the end of the year. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- Dozens of businesses shut down Friday after a series of water main breaks severely damaged their buildings. RELATED: Sinkhole reported on Interstate 8 in Mission Valley areaBird Rock Coffee Roasters put the brewing on hold when water came rushing in. "All of a sudden the water started spewing up from the middle of the street," said Co-owner Jeff Taylor. "We had six or eight inches probably busting up against the windows, it started seeping up here underneath the doors actually."One of four water main breaks on Thursday was just outside their coffee shop in Morena. Taylor estimates about ,000 worth of damage. He says his crew acted quickly and kept it from getting worse. "We had sandbags blocking off the inside of the windows to keep water from coming in, it still came in, but I think he saved a lot of product and damage to the store by his efforts."The breaks in Morena flooded business and left about 60 customers without water. Another break on 1-8 left drivers stranded for hours after a sinkhole opened up on the asphalt. Overall, not a great day for a lot of people. "Oh, and by the way, somebody hit my car yesterday, so it was a fun day yesterday," said Taylor. He even started damage control by calling contractors and insurance companies before finding out the city would help him. Now, they're working on drying up so they can start roasting again.  "It really is just life, what are you gonna do. There's nothing to be upset about," Taylor said. "Really you just take it one by one, you deal with it you answer the questions you solve the problems, and you move on to the next one."Taylor said he hopes to be back open brewing coffee on Monday.  1764
