BEIJING, Dec. 24 (Xinhua) -- Jia Qinglin, chairman of the National Committee of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference (CPPCC), stressed the importance of strengthening national unity under the new situation Wednesday at a national conference on ethnic work.     Jia urged participants to seriously study and implement the recent instructions of Hu Jintao, state president and general secretary of the Communist Party of China (CPC) Central Committee.     "Firmly hold to the main theme of a common unity and progress for all ethnic groups and closely center on task of promoting national unity and achieving a common progress for all ethnic groups," said the CPPCC chairman, who is also a member of the Standing Committee of the CPC Central Committee Political Bureau.     In his speech, the top political advisor called for persisting in upholding socialism with China's own characteristics and firmly taking the road toward resolving ethnic problems with China's own characteristics; persisting in implementing a scientific concept of development and making efforts to promote a sound and fast economic and social development for ethnic groups and minority areas; persisting in and perfecting ethnic regional autonomy and make substantial efforts to protect the legal rights of ethnic minorities; and persisting in the fundamental demand for promoting social harmony and ceaselessly consolidating and developing an equal, united, mutually-supporting, and harmonious socialist national relations.     Strengthening national unity depends on the strengthening and improving of the Party leadership on the ethnic work, Jia stressed.     Vice Premier Hui Liangyu also addressed the conference. Different areas and departments should unify their thinking and action to Hu's instructions as well as the major decisions and arrangements made by the Central Authorities, said the official, who is a member of the Political Bureau of the CPC Central Committee.     The meeting was presided over by Du Qinglin, vice chairman of the CPPCC National Committee and director of the United Front Department of the CPC Central Committee.     Present at the meeting were heads of provincial level United Front departments and ethnic work commissions from across the country.

ANKARA, Nov. 27 (Xinhua) -- China attaches importance to its friendship and cooperation with Turkey, said China's top political advisor Jia Qinglin here Thursday.     China will enhance exchanges and mutual trust, consultations and coordination in international and regional affairs, and cooperation in economy, trade, culture, education and tourism with Turkey, said Jia at a meeting with Turkish Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan.     Jia, chairman of the National Committee of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference (CPPCC), said the Chinese side is satisfied with the development of bilateral relations and confident in their future friendship and cooperation. BEIJING, Oct. 19 (Xinhua) -- China will adopt a flexible and prudent macro-control policy to keep a stable and rapid economic development in the current fourth quarter, according to the State Council here on Sunday.     Related financial, credit and foreign trade measures will be carried out in the near future in response to the slowing trend of the country's economic growth and the continuous fluctuation in the domestic capital market amid the ongoing global financial crisis, according to a State Council meeting presided over by Premier Wen Jiabao on Sunday.     Agriculture continued to be a priority, with multiple support policies to come following the Communist Party of China Central Committee's decision to strengthen rural development this week.     To boost development of small- and medium-sized enterprises, the government planned to widen their investment channels by further encouraging financial institutions to give out more loans. Companies would also get more fiscal support for technology innovation.     In addition, the country would reinforce national investment in areas such as the southwest quake-zone reconstruction, infrastructure development and social welfare system, among others.     With regard to the foreign trade sector, the State Council, China's Cabinet, decided to increase imports of goods of domestic need and support the country's exports so as to realize the balance of international payments.     "We will further raise the export rebate of labour-intensive products such as garments and textiles, as well as mechanical and electrical products with high-added value," the council said.     In addition, the country's top administrative body would still keep a cautious eye on price increases with a focus on agricultural and energy related goods.     The advent of September's tainted milk scandal had also prompted the central government to pay closer attention to food safety in the fourth quarter. GUANGZHOU, Nov. 22 (Xinhua) -- What China can do for the world is not to sell out its massive dollar reserve, but slightly increase its hold of the currency to give reasonable support to the U.S. effort to save its economy, said a senior economist here on Saturday.     It is indeed difficult for China to handle its huge forex reserve, as the U.S. currency has already depreciated 20 percent against the Chinese yuan, said Cheng Siwei, well-known economist at a financial forum held in Guangdong.     "China would suffer from losses if it sells off the dollar, so our strategy should be not to sell, but to slightly increase dollar reserve," said Cheng, also former vice-chairman of the Standing Committee of the National People's Congress (NPC).     Cheng made the remarks amid increasing concern that China might use its forex reserve to finance its 4-trillion-yuan stimulus plan. China held 1.9 trillion dollars worth of forex reserve by September this year.     China "can only afford to do what is corresponding to its level of development and national power amid a global crisis," said Cheng.     "We should be prudent as to how to deal with our forex reserve," said Cheng, noting that China, despite its large size of economy, has its gross domestic product (GDP) accounting for only 6 percent of the world's total, and its per capita GDP ranking falling out of the top one hundred list.
