SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- Six new flu deaths have been reported this week in San Diego County as the number of emergency room visits due to the flu remain the same, according to the County Health and Human Services Agency.So far this flu season, 308 people have died from the flu throughout the county. Those who have died range in age from one to 101 years old and almost all had underlying medical conditions.Also last week, 682 lab-confirmed cases of the flu were reported compared to 620 the week before.“The number of influenza cases being reported is still elevated, a sign that the flu is still here and making people sick,” said Wilma Wooten M.D., M.P.H., County public health officer. “People should continue getting vaccinated.”So far this flu season, more than 19,000 lab-confirmed cases of the flu have been reported, compared to nearly 5,000 last season. 874

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -  As the San Diego Airport plans a Billion expansion to Terminal 1, concerns over how to get people to and from Lindbergh Field are creating problems for the project."We are the first and last impression people have of San Diego," says Dennis Probst, the Airport VP of Development. "We want to make it a good one."The airport served a record 22 million passengers in 2017. They expect that number to grow to 28 million by 2035.  Getting all of those people to and from Lindbergh is a big part of the expansion.Plans put forward by the airport call for a new three lane roadway connecting Harbor Drive to Lindbergh. It would start near Laurel Street and take people directly to the new terminal and proposed parking garage."No stop lights, no stop signs, free-flowing," says Probst. "It's gonna take about 45,000 cars a day off Harbor Drive."But other San Diego agencies say the airport needs to think bigger and focus on different modes of transportation, instead of just cars."Connecting the airport to transit is something we've been talking about for a long, long time," says Rafael Castellanos, the Chair of the Port of San Diego. "If San Diego wants to be a world class city, we need to have world-class infrastructure."The Port owns the land that the airport sits on. They've proposed a light rail-style people mover that would connect trolley stations nearby to the terminal.Meanwhile, SANDAG and the County of San Diego released a study proposing a skyway with gondola rides that could run from the Convention Center to the Airport."I think the only obstacle is getting everyone to the table quickly," says Castellanos. "That's something that can be easily overcome."The airport says they're willing to look at all options, but they can't take a stand or incorporate any into their current plans because they can only control what happens on airport property."The view from the airport's side is that we're not the region's transit planning agency," says Probst.Funding is also an issue. The expansion project will only use FAA and airport-generated money. Because of that, FAA rules say they can only spend money to improve things at the airport or directly related to the airport. A tram or skyway that spans all of Harbor Drive would require an exception to that rule and would need money from other agencies as well.Probst says the airport has already started talking to the FAA about that option. They got a similar exception to help with infrastructure improvements when the airport built the rental car center a few years back.Right now, the airport is reviewing comments from their Environmental Impact Report. The next step is to put together environmental quality reports for the state and the federal government. Probst says the debate over transit is slowing down the process, to the point where he doesn't think they'll be able to start construction until after 2020. 2932

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — The National Center for Missing & Exploited Children is asking for the public’s help locating a 16-year-old girl who reportedly disappeared from her Northern California home.Lia Long is described as a light skinned Native American female, standing 5 feet 4 inches tall and weighing 125 pounds with long black hair and brown eyes. Long currently has one dermal (dimple) piercing on both her right and left cheek.Long is said to have a tattoo with the words “forever in my heart Alyssa 05/23/17” tattooed on her right clavicle and another with the upside down crescent moon on her right thigh.Police are also looking trying to identity a light skinned white or Hispanic male and a black male adult who are believed to have left the city of Williams with Long. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — Two people have been arrested for the fire that destroyed a Chase Bank during unrest in La Mesa last May.FBI San Diego said 19-year-old Alexander Jacob King and 33-year-old Ricky Bernard Cooper were arrested on Monday and charged with arson of a structure in connection with the bank fire. King was also charged with one count of looting and Cooper is facing four separate counts of looting related to various La Mesa businesses.On May 30, FBI investigators say the fire was set at the Chase Bank at 4791 Spring St., causing extensive damage to the building. Since the fire, investigators from La Mesa Police, San Diego Police, and the San Diego FBI have been piecing together evidence leading to Monday's arrests."While peaceful protest is a right protected by the U.S. Constitution and a time-honored tradition in our country, violent criminal activity, including arson and looting, will not be tolerated," the FBI said in a release announcing the arrests.Last May, demonstrators marched through the city and gathered outside of La Mesa Police Department to protest the arrest of an African American man by a white LMPD officer caught on video. The protest followed a week of demonstrations around the country stemming from the Memorial Day death of George Floyd while in police custody.Later that night, protests turned violent as rioters set several fires, and damaged and looted businesses. 1422

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- Uber Eats will begin testing a new service that will deliver food using drones in San Diego, the company announced Wednesday. Uber and San Diego were granted the winning bid by the Federal Aviation Administration last year to test the new delivery service, according to the company. Here’s how Uber says the system will work: After a restaurant loads the meal into the drone and the drone takes off, a system will notify a nearby Uber Eats delivery partner to meet the drone at a drop-off location. The orders will then be picked up and hand-delivered to customers.
