SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Sea World employees went on a rescue mission Saturday to free a Sea lion pup from a plastic ribbon wrapped around his neck on Boomer's Beach.The timing is poetic, on World Oceans Day. A day that "provides a unique opportunity to honor, help protect, and conserve our world’s shared ocean," according to WorldOceansDay.org.Sea World Animal Care Specialist Brooke Hubbard said they had been monitoring the pup and received another call Saturday. This time it sounded like the 2-3-year-old sea lion was in an area where they could safely remove the ribbon.A rescue that saved the mammal's life, "when there is lining around it's neck it can constrict it's airways and it's esophagus making it so they can't breathe or eat over time," Hubbard said.Video from her supervisor's perspective shows what it was like when the team snuck up on the sea lion, threw their net and cut the ribbon off with a pair of ordinary scissors.When they released the Sea lion, he scooted back to the ocean, "that's the best feeling in the world, especially since we didn't have to bring it back here and rehabilitate it," she said.Hubbard said this is is completely preventable, "please don't litter at the beach. SeaWorld has a similar offer for active-duty service members.“My son is a military veteran who served in both Iraq and Afghanistan. I’m not only proud of his service, but of all those who have worn the uniform of our country,” said Marilyn Hannes, SeaWorld San Diego’s park president. “We genuinely appreciate the sacrifices they’ve made to protect our freedom and are once again offering them free admission to the park. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- Seven people were displaced following a house fire in Mountain View early Saturday morning, according to San Diego Fire-Rescue.The fire was reported just after 3:30 a.m. on Teak Street near Ocean View Boulevard. Crews quickly responded and were able to get the blaze under control. The home that burned sits on a lot with a second home in front, and the front house was not damaged.Family and residents of the front house said they believe the fire started from a washer/dryer unit. They also said that they had to pull bars off of a window to help people escape, with those outside pulling and those inside kicking on the bars. Four people were were hurt after climbing through the broken window.Crews say a total of seven people were displaced and the American Red Cross was called in to help, but family on scene said everyone is okay. They said the hardest part is realizing they lost everything, including Christmas presents that the two little girls who lived in the burned home had just unwrapped the day before.The family started a GoFundMe to raise money following the fire. 1112

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — San Diego's Registrar of Voters addressed worries over ballots that may have been filled out using Sharpies, saying the ballots will not be disqualified.Wednesday, an attorney working for President Donald Trump's campaign claimed supporters who used Sharpies on their ballots are worried that their votes are being thrown out as Arizona's vote tally continued. There's no evidence that Sharpie votes have been disqualified and the Maricopa County Elections Department has said that ballots won't be impacted because a Sharpie was used.RELATED: 'Sharpie ballots' have the attention of a Trump campaign hoping to flip ArizonaThursday, the San Diego Registrar of Voters offered a similar statement, saying Sharpies — even if they bleed through the ballot — will not disqualify votes. Our voting system prevents a situation where if a voter uses a Sharpie to vote and it bleeds through to the other side, it will not impact any 'bubbles' on the opposite side," the Registrar said.The county added that polling locations do not provide Sharpies and instead use "archival pens," which were identified to be the best writing instrument more than a decade ago."In San Diego County, we do not provide Sharpies to voters to mark their ballot. What we use are archival pens, which we researched over 10 years ago as the best marking instrument for a voter.
