SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — A San Diego sailor is on a mission to keep homeless veterans from going cold this winter.U.S. Navy Chief Petty Officer Gregory Ellis hopes to raise ,500 for winter jackets that convert into both sleeping bags and over-the-shoulder bags during the off-season.The jackets are made by the Detroit-based nonprofit The Empowerment Plan, which hires single parents from homeless shelters to sew the jackets. “Our homeless veteran community, many of them are very proud and don’t want to be a burden on anybody,” said Ellis.He plans to deliver the jackets to veterans staying at the Veterans Village of San Diego temporary bridge shelter, which houses nearly 200 homeless veterans. “A jacket that actually converts into a sleeping bag, that actually converts to an over-the-shoulder bag, it’s three times beneficial for them, so at least they’ll have something warm to put over their shoulders and keep them out of the elements.”Ellis says he wants veterans to know the community cares about them and is grateful for their service.You can donate to the fundraising effort here. 1099

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — An unresponsive man was pulled to shore Wednesday after possibly being swept out to sea by strong waves along Ocean Beach's coast.San Diego Fire-Rescue lifeguards responded to reports of the man not breathing at about 2 p.m. at Dog Beach. Lifeguards on jet skis found the man lodged into the rocks on the jetty, according to SDFD Sgt. Bruce Jamieson. He had reportedly been swept about 75 yards from shore, according to SDFD.Lifeguards performed CPR and rushed the man to a nearby hospital, but did not give an update on his condition.Witnesses said the man, who is approximately 50-years-old and from Nevada, may have been chasing after his dog in the water when he was pulled out to sea.A high surf advisory was issued for San Diego County's coastline from 10 a.m. Wednesday to 10 p.m. Thursday, bringing large sets and the threat of rip currents to the area's shores. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- An online petition is growing among San Diego State University students who feel they should be partially reimbursed for tuition and other campus fees because of the pandemic. SDSU senior Kelsey Santin created the petition on Change.org Monday night. Since then, the petition has received over 3,000 signatures. Santin argues that since the way of learning has changed, so should the amount they have to pay. She also says they're paying for campus fees for services they aren't able to access on campus. SDSU started the school year with limited in-person classes and returned to all online learning after hundreds of students tested positive for COVID-19.ABC 10News reached out to SDSU for comment and a spokesperson referred us to the CSU System. A spokesperson from CSU says the money for tuition covers instruction, which students are still receiving online. Campus-based mandatory fees for things like the health center and advising are still available in a virtual format. Other mandatory fees, the spokesperson says, are fees that fund facilities that are often of a result of student referendums voted and approved by students, for things like construction or renovation of a facility. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - A vandal left a trail of flattened car tires and angry drivers across a mile-long stretch of Pacific Beach on Monday."Frustrated is the best word I can use," said Jennifer Whetstone. Whetstone discovered a flat tire on her Jeep Wranger near her home on Felspar Street just after noon. Replacing the slashed tire will cost her more 0.Police actually contacted her and her husband on the phone to let them know about the slashing, because officers were already in the area. According to Whetstone, police told her the same vandal had just slashed the tires of six vehicles in a Bank of America parking lot.It all happened in broad daylight, off busy streets. The description of the vandal was provided by a witness to police."He saw the whole thing, heard the pop and then saw a guy on a mountain bike - tall, skinny and wearing a hat - pedal off," said Whetstone.The witness saw the man bike down the street in a hurry.
