UNIVERSITY CITY (KGTV) -- Several University City residents were rescued from their apartment balconies early Monday morning after their building became flooded in up to four feet of water from a busted fire hydrant.The incident first started around 1:30 a.m. when a motorist in an SUV crashed into a fire hydrant in the 9000 block of Genesee Avenue, in front of the Canyon Park Apartments across from La Jolla Country Day School.The sheared fire hydrant created a geyser that flooded the adjacent apartment building. Several lower level units became submerged in up to four feet of water. Some residents were forced out onto their balconies as waterfalls cascaded through their apartments and into the canyon below.Firefighters were able to rescue those trapped on their balconies without further incident. It took crews about a half hour to turn off the water.The American Red Cross was called in to help 22 adults, six dogs and a cat arrange for another place to stay.The driver told officers he fell asleep before crashing into the fire hydrant, San Diego Police officer Tony Martinez said. 1107

UPDATE (July 27, 1 p.m.): The owner of missing 40-year-old tortoise Lou said her beloved pet was found safe and is back home.Jessica Comfort told ABC 10News that someone brought Lou to her front yard on Monday, but that person left before she could talk to them.Comfort said her tortoise did not have any visible injuries and is doing well.Comfort is working to schedule Lou a visit to the vet as soon as possible. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — A woman in Santee desperately looking for her nearly 40-year-old tortoise says she's been able to rescue other reptiles during the search.The Texas and California tortoise mix, named Lou, weighs about 20 pounds and is slightly bigger than the size of a dinner plate. Jessica Comfort says he's been missing for two weeks."The night before he went missing, we had a water main break," says Comfort. "With the water shooting up over the roof, we had to get an emergency plumber and back some foliage, and we left the gate open, unfortunately."Comfort says she's been searching for the animal ever since. Signs have been posted around her Santee neighborhood and surrounding areas."The search has been wild and crazy," Comfort said.Lou hasn't shown up yet, but Comfort says she was able to rescue three other animals during her search. The animals included a small turtle, a Reed Foot tortoise that needed medical attention, and a Sulcata Tortoise named Rocky. Rocky will be reunited with his family very soon.Comfort has been working with the San Diego Turtle and Tortoise Society to ensure all of the found animals are safe. Update, Aug. 8, 10:15 a.m. The victim's fiancee notified 10News of his death Wednesday night, saying "Steven Johnson went on to be a hero to save other lives."LAKESIDE, Calif. (KGTV) - Loved ones are making a gut-wrenching plea for tips after a hit-and-run crash that left a man on life support, days before his wedding day."I don't know what to do without him," said Sami Johnson, the daughter of Steven Johnson"I'm heartbroken. He was my everything," said Karlene Moen, Johnson's fiancee.Johnson - a father of six and a grandfather - was riding his motorcycle to work at a Lakeside trucking company Friday when he crashed around 5:30 a.m. on southbound Highway 67 just past Willows Road. His first call was to his fiancee."He sounded hurt. He sounded scared, and he was pissed off," said Moen.He posted photos of his injured leg on Facebook. He told Moen a woman in a car cut him off, causing him to crash."He said, 'We locked eyes. She knows I was there ... She just left me and left me laying in the road,'" said Moen. Soon after the accident, he developed chest pains. He was rushed into surgery with a torn aorta. On Sunday morning, Johnson went into cardiac arrest. He was revived but suffered severe brain damage. He was placed on life support. Moen says the he will be taken off life support in the coming days, and his organs will be donated.His wedding planned for Saturday will now be a 'Celebration of Life' service."He'll never see me in my wedding dress that I bought especially for him," said a tearful Moen.She's hoping the driver that caused the crash will be identified.We just want justice. Two students were injured after a gun accidentally discharged at a school in Fulton County, Georgia on Thursday.Police received reports of a loud pop coming from a classroom at Banneker High School just before 3:30 p.m.According to a spokesperson with Fulton County Schools, a bullet hit a female student in the ankle, and also grazed another student. Both students were treated for minor injuries, according to the spokesperson.Officials say officers searched the classroom and found a low-caliber handgun hidden in a box. It's believed the weapon was brought on school property in a book bag by a student, according to the school spokesperson.The spokesperson added that "the investigation into this incident is ongoing and the [Fulton County Schools Police Department] plans to file criminal charges against everyone involved in this incident in accordance with District policy."Three students will face charges in the incident. One student is being charged with one count possession of a weapon and one count of a weapon on campus. Two students are being charged with reckless conduct because of their contact with the weapon.The spokesperson told CBS46 the gun did not belong to the injured students.No bags of any kind are being allowed into the school building on Friday.  1297
