SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - More than 75,000 homes in San Diego are in areas that pose a "high" or "extreme" risk of wildfire, according to a new study by CoreLogic.That's the third most homes in the US, behind only Los Angeles and Riverside.In San Diego, the study found that it would cost .81 billion to rebuild all those homes.The news comes as San Diego, and California as a whole, are in the midst of a relatively tame wildfire season. According to Cal Fire, there have been 4,9267 wildfires so far this year. That's well below the pace of the last two years, when there were 7,571 fires in 2018 and 9,133 fires in 2017.Similarly, the amount of land burned by the fires is down in 2019. So far, 117,586 acres have been scorched. In 2018, the total number was 1,671,203 acres. In 2017, 1,240,606 acres were burned.Cal Fire says cooler temperatures and higher than normal humidity caused the number of wild fires to drop this year."When humidity is up, the fire doesn't burn as aggressively as it could if they were lower," says Cal Fire Captain Isaac Sanchez. "That's played a big factor for us this year."But, Sanchez warns that people shouldn't look at the low numbers and think the risk is also low. He says the next few months will have prime conditions for a devastating fire."We've seen the hottest days we're going to see, the temperatures have been warm, the humidity has been low," says Sanchez. "So the fuels that are in the hillsides right now are receptive to fires."Sanchez says people should remain fire-ready. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — Poway Unified School District has approved a plan for some students to return to in-person classes starting as soon as this month.The district's board on Thursday approved a phased reopening plan for elementary schools starting on Oct. 1, with the first group of schools opening with an AM/PM schedule.Abraxas High School will reopen with an A/B schedule on Oct. 8, and PUSD's remaining elementary schools will reopen with an AM/PM schedule on Oct. 12, according to the district.The board also approved resuming on-campus special education services and in-person instruction for small groups after Sept. 24.RELATED: San Diego County schools allowed to reopen for in-person learningAll students, from preschool through 12th grade, will be required to wear a mask when returning to campus. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- Police Wednesday arrested a woman they say vandalized a church Monday afternoon. Kelly Duggan, 26, was arrested after police say she caused more than ,000 worth of damage to Our Lady of Guadalupe Church.10News Reporter Bree Steffen Reach out Duggan, who agreed to a jailhouse interview. Duggan told us that she's in an emotional state, heartbroken over her mother's death. "I don't know what's going on anymore, and that's what's making me mad," she said. "I'll still pay for it, that's fine."According to authorities, Duggan threw a wooden kneeler at a Plexiglas window protecting a religious shrine, breaking both the kneeler and the glass.Duggan also destroyed several flower vases decorating the shrine before leaving the church, police say. She was arrested for felony vandalism after being spotted in Barrio Logan.Duggan said she didn't vandalize the church out of disrespect or hate for the faith. The church told 10News they caught Duggan's action on their surveillance cameras but didn't share the video because they worried that people who saw might harm her. Duggan had this message for the church: "Thank you for forgiving me, you know, out of the kindness of your heart."  1265

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- Police Monday identified the victim in a deadly Mount Hope-area shooting in late December. According to police, 54-year-old Darryl Toliver was shot and killed in an alleyway on the 800 block of Raven Street around 2:45 a.m. December 29. Witnesses told police and unknown man and two vehicles were spotted leaving the area around the time of the shooting. Police said at the time that the man was only a person of interest. One of the vehicles spotted leaving the scene was described as a white, 1990s Honda Accord while the other was described as a 2006-2010 Chrysler 300.
