SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - With the fall school year quickly approaching, there are concerns some students will be left behind.Schools across the state worked to close the technology gap over the summer. However, the California Department of Education says more than 700,000 students still lack computing devices, and another 300,000 lack hotspots to connect to the internet.Even if all students have the right tools, will they participate?"For some people, they may find it challenging," said parent Frank Powell. "In my situation, I find it impossible."Powell is a father of three. His oldest child is 11 and has special needs. Powell said they haven't logged into a learning program at all this summer."It's good for some. For others, it's impossible, and for others, it's going to be extremely challenging," he said.Back in March, the headlines about distance learning were daunting.A Los Angeles Times article on March 30 stated, "About 15,000 Los Angeles high school students are absent online and have failed to do any schoolwork while more than 40,000 have not been in daily contact with their teachers since March 16, when the coronavirus forced campus shutdowns."A spokesperson for the Los Angeles Unified School District said the district did not take classroom attendance when schools initially closed. Instead, it made every effort to provide students with technology and get them connected to online instruction. Los Angeles Unified invested 0 million to provide devices and technology for students.A graphic provided by the district showed a dramatic increase in the number of students who are now connected.At the state's second-largest school district, a San Diego Unified spokesperson said at the end of May nearly 98 percent of students had logged in since they began measuring this at the start of April. The district said that the number is accumulative."The participation of 97.8% of our 101,000 transitional kindergarten to 12th-grade students is extremely encouraging, but it is not 100 percent. It is, however, above our average rate of attendance on any given day of the school year of approximately 96%. For comparison, our rate of chronically absent students for the last school year was 12.4%. Of the 2,204 students who have not logged in, the majority are in very young grade levels. Some 51% are in Transitional Kindergarten or kindergarten. For a point of comparison, in a typical school year, kindergarten students account for 12% of all absences," the SDUSD spokesperson said.At the Poway Unified School District, elementary, middle, and high school participation ranged between 98 and 99 percent, district officials said.The district noted, "The data indicates the percent of students that connected or participated at some level in distance learning. Participation did vary, day-to-day, however, we conducted a significant amount of outreach to students and families. PUSD teachers, counselors and site administrators all worked to contact students via email, phone calls, and home visits. "The next week, it was half of that, and the week after was half of that."Davis said she experienced challenges with student motivation and accessibility in the spring but did believe virtual learning can work."I don't think it's going to ever be what we can accomplish in the classroom, but I do believe it can be effective."According to the California Department of Education, "Education Code Section 43504(f) requires each LEA to develop written procedures for tiered reengagement strategies for all pupils who are absent from distance learning for more than three schooldays or 60 percent of the instructional days in a school week. These procedures shall include, but are not limited, to verification of current contact information for each enrolled pupil, daily notification to parents or guardians of absences, a plan for outreach from the school to determine pupil needs including connection line with health and social services as necessary and, when feasible, line transitioning the pupil to full-time in-person instruction." 4359
SAN DIEGO (CNS) - Two researchers, including one from the Scripps Institution of Oceanography at UC San Diego, are in Antarctica in an effort to uncover the planet's oldest ice.The research trip is part of a cordial international race to find the ice, which will give geologists and climate scientists new insight into Earth's climate history. Scripps paleoclimatologist Jeff Severinghaus and University of Minnesota-Deluth geologist John Goodge arrived this month at an ice-drilling outpost at McMurdo Station, Antarctica.In October, Severinghaus and researchers at Princeton University published a study in the journal Nature analyzing a two-million-year-old ice core. However, that core was incomplete in its historical portrait of ancient air. They believe their 50-ton drill could secure a 50-meter ice core with a full timeline of the continent's geologic development. Eventually, it could be used to dig to the continent's bedrock, which dates back 3 billion years.In addition to each other, geologists and climate scientists in the southern hemisphere are in a race against nature, as climate change continues to melt Antarctic ice and cause sea levels to rise, particularly on the continent's western edge, according to Goodge."The bigger question is what's happening in East Antarctica because there's a lot more sea level rise potential if it begins to melt as well," he said. "So we really need to understand what those conditions are."Once collected, the researchers will pack the ice samples in boxes until January, when the Antarctic sea ice thaws and the samples can be shipped to Port Hueneme in Ventura County. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- A man died Saturday night following an officer-involved shooting in El Cerrito. Police say they received a call just before 8 p.m. from a 70-year-old woman who said her 52-year-old nephew attacked her with a brick at a home on the 5800 block of Adelaide Avenue. Two officers responded to the scene and found the woman, who they say had been hit in the head and chest. Officers found the man in the backyard of the home and tried to arrest him, but they say he struggled.Witnesses say the suspect then picked up a shovel and started swinging at police. "He continued quickly advancing on the officers while swinging the shovel, prompting one officer to fire his Taser, while the second officer fired his service weapon," San Diego Police said in a news release. The suspect was struck by gunfire at least once and died at the scene, police say. The man's identity isn't being released at this time. The suspect’s aunt is expected to be okay and no officers were injured in the incident. The department says one of the officers is a four-year veteran of the department while the other is a 16-year veteran. "They're bright stars and prime examples of excellence in our educational system, and we hope that all students can enroll in great STEAM and computer science programs with educators like them, to prepare them for the jobs of tomorrow."Khamphet Pease, a sixth-grade teacher at Wilson Middle School in San Diego, was named a finalist in the mathematics category. An educator for 14 years, Pease teaches courses in Introduction to Coding; Gateway to Technology: Design and Modeling, Automation and Robotics; and Computer Science for Innovators and Makers. From 2014-16 she also mentored 16 high school girls from schools across the county to build a microlab experiment that was sent to the International Space Station to test zero gravity.Marlys Williamson, a fifth-grade teacher at Wolf Canyon Elementary in Chula Vista, was named a finalist in the science category. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - A 14-year-old from Jamul was among seven military teenagers crowned Operation Homefront 2018 Military Child of the Year.Isabelle Richards, who attends High Tech Middle School in Point Loma, received the award this week for her accomplishments in leadership and extracurricular activities while facing the challenges of military family life.Richards was given the Child of the Year award for the U.S. Navy.The San Diego teenager created a local call to action group called Cards and Cupcakes Supporting Our Wounded Warriors, which sends greeting cards and cupcakes to a segment of veterans. She also founded and runs the Dove Self-Esteem project at High Tech Middle.The hours Richards has dedicated to the cause pales in comparison to the contributions of wounded veterans, according to the teen, who says "When I am tired or feeling lazy, I remember what they sacrificed, and they never complain."In addition to her accomplishments, Richards has worked with the Freedom Station and USO San Diego and maintained a 4.0 GPA.
