SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- Retail stores across San Diego County are preparing for more restrictions in anticipation of a move into the state's COVID-19 purple tier.For retail stores, it would mean reduced capacity to 25%.At Warwick's in La Jolla, they're setting up window displays, not just to be festive, but also to help shoppers who may not feel comfortable coming inside the book store.Owner Nancy Warwick says she would support the decision if that's what it comes down to, but acknowledges they, like most, are struggling. They've been creative, offering more online shopping, phone orders, deliveries, and contact-free purchases.She says they'll turn one set of doors into an entrance, another the exit, to maintain a flow of traffic and a count of the number of people inside the store if they have to.For Warwick, it's about making her customers feel comfortable as well as her staff, some of whom she says have not returned to work because of safety concerns.Despite that, she is confident their online offerings and their emphasis on personal shopping will help them weather this round of restrictions, if it comes to that.Being in the store, she says, is uplifting, and provides a respite for customers who are looking for nostalgia, finding gifts there that are not available elsewhere. 1302

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Ross Rock, or as locals prefer "The Rock," has had its share of headgear.The lone rock just off the coast from Sunset Cliffs Boulevard has been the target of vandals in the past and has again been crowned, this time by a mermaid.It's not clear how the mermaid was installed on top of the rock. Placing objects on the Ross Rock has almost become a ritual.In 2006, a large pterodactyl had sat atop the rock before being washed away. A peace sign, the numbers "2010" — local graduates, perhaps? — a Christmas tree, a tiki head, and at one point, a toilet with a Raiders fan wedged inside have all been found taking refuge from the waves below.It remains unclear who makes the objects or how they have installed them in the past.Time and again, however, Mother Nature or possibly another vandal has removed what's been placed. 1359

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - San Diego County has seen two flu deaths and more than twice the unusual number of illnesses so far this season, health officials reported Wednesday. County Health and Human Services officials said the number of confirmed flu cases is more than double the past three-year average, putting this year on par with the severe 2017-2018 flu season. Seventy-seven San Diego County residents died of flu complications last season. Almost 10,000 became ill. More than 235 cases of flu were confirmed by Sept. 28, compared to 67 at this time last flu season. “People should get vaccinated now to avoid getting sick and infecting others,” said Wilma Wooten, M.D., M.P.H., County public health officer. “The vaccine is safe and effective and is available throughout the region.” The flu shot is recommended for everyone over six months old. It takes about two weeks for immunity to develop, according to health officials. Anyone who needs the vaccine and does not have health insurance can go to a County public health center. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- San Diego Harbor Police Tuesday arrested a man accused of attacking a teen Syrian refugee on board an MTS trolley, sparking a hate crime investigation. According to police, 26-year-old Adrian Vergara was arrested on an unrelated misdemeanor narcotic charge. During his arrest, Vergara was recognized as being wanted in connection to an ongoing hate crime investigation, police said. The arrest stems from the beating of a 17-year-old Syrian refugee on a San Diego Trolley car Oct. 15. Representatives for the Partnership for the Advancement of New Americans (PANA), who spoke on the teen's behalf, told 10News the teen was speaking Arabic while on FaceTime with a friend when a man on the trolley asked him, "Where are you from? Are you Mexican?"RELATED: Teen attacked on trolley in possible hate crimeThe teen reportedly responded, "No, I am Arab."According to the teen, the man then started punching him and cursing while using racial slurs. The victim reportedly exited the trolley at the 62nd Street station in Encanto. He said the man also got off the trolley and left the scene.Numerous people reportedly watched as the victim was attacked, but no one stepped in to help him.
