SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — A man who neighbors say was acting erratically in the Middletown neighborhood on Sunday was pronounced dead shortly after police arrived and found him lying in the street.San Diego Police officers received numerous calls regarding a man screaming, vandalizing a vehicle, and stripping his clothes off at Columbia Street near Sassafras St. just after 12:30 p.m. Police said officers arrived and were directed to the man, who was lying down in the street. Officers placed the man in handcuffs but noticed he was in medical distress. They took the handcuffs off the man and began CPR, police say. A witness who was a doctor also helped perform CPR until San Diego Fire-Rescue arrived, but the man died at the scene, according to SDPD.The man was not identified by name, but police said he was a black male in his mid-thirties.SDPD homicide detectives are investigating the death out of "an abundance of caution," police said. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- A man who groped and sexually assaulted four female students as they walked to their off-campus housing near SDSU pleaded guilty Monday.Minda Shewangizaw, 20, pleaded guilty to charges including felony and misdemeanor counts of false imprisonment and sexual battery.All four victims in the case, who ranged in age from 17 to 19, testified during the preliminary hearing.One of the victims said she and her roommate were walking home after midnight when Shewangizaw came up behind her and “grabbed her butt.RELATED: Women testify against UC Riverside student accused of groping near San Diego State”Her roommate said she noticed someone walking behind them before he began to chase them. "I said, You need to leave. He grabbed my hand and pulled me toward him. He pulled my shirt down and grabbed my breast."She said she kicked Shewangizaw and was able to break free.Another victim testified that she and another woman were on a pedestrian bridge heading back to their dorm when she heard footsteps and was smacked on her “behind” by Schewangizaw."I was livid. I said, What are you doing? Don't do that! He laughed it off."She said she kept walking when the defendant made a remark about her breasts before pulling her shirt down and putting his hands on her chest.A witness said Shewangizaw then grabbed her breast and buttocks and trapped her against a rail before laughing and walking away.The sentencing is scheduled for June 12. 1460

San Diego’s median income can afford renters 552 square feet, according to a new report by Rent Café. The City of San Diego says the median income for a family of four is ,400. According to Data USA, the median household income in the South Bay city is slightly less than ,000. While 552 square feet may not seem like a ton of space, the median income in other California cities affords renters far less. According to the report, if you limit spending on rent to 30 percent of your income, you’d have to live in less than 350 square feet in both Los Angeles and Oakland. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- A judge is expected to decide whether to release a sexually violent predator into the Jacumba Hot Springs area.Joseph Bocklett, a convicted repeat sex offender, had a placement hearing Monday morning. Because of COVID-19 restrictions, it was held virtually. ABC 10News wasn’t given permission to record it, but we did monitor what happened inside of the courtroom.The Department of State Hospitals wants to put the 75-year-old Bocklett in a home in Jacumba -- after a Judge denied a proposal to move him into a home in Pauma Valley.Bocklett was convicted of three sexual offenses over a 19-year period involving victims between the ages of 4 and 9, according to the San Diego County District Attorney's Office. He was last sentenced in 2000 to a 17-year prison term and later civilly committed to Coalinga State Hospital to undergo treatment.Though the public wasn’t allowed to physically be inside of he courtroom, they’ve been working to make sure their voices are heard, protesting this recommendation.They have got pages of signatures from residents in the East County. A few of them gathered near the courthouse holding signs expressing their concerns about the possibility of another sex offender being placed in their community.Among that group Melissa Woodall and her daughter. Woodall said rural East County shouldn’t always be the first choice when it comes to placing sexually violent predators.Woodall said, "It’s awful, it really is. There are so many people who have been put into our community who are predators.”The judge says he’ll take a few days to review the letter that were submitted and the testimony that was given before he makes his decision. 1696

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — A man who spent almost half his life behind bars for a murder did not commit walked out of Donovan Prison in South San Diego County Friday a free man. Spaghetti with meatballs. This is the meal Jack Sagin has been dreaming of for years. The 73-year-old spent the last 33 years in several different state prisons for a crime he did not commit. "I'm sitting there getting up every morning, wondering what the hell am I doing here?" Sagin said. "I ain't done nothing."In July 1986, Sagin was charged with the stabbing murder of a Monterey woman, Paula Durocher. The then-39-year-old used drugs, had a record, and was a perfect scapegoat. His imprisonment was all dependent on two jailhouse informants. "An easy one to convict," Sagin said. But he was stubborn too. Once in prison, Sagin continued to write letters to his Attorney General, congressmen, and anyone else who would listen to his cry of innocence. Then, he heard of a scientific breakthrough that could help him. "When it became DNA, it blew the top of my head off," Sagin said. Sagin was one of the first cases the Northern California Innocence Project took on in 2002. Investigators with the nonprofit reopened the case and found a clue. "We have DNA from a probable perpetrator right there, underneath her fingernails," Northern California Innocence Project attorney Kelley Fleming said. That DNA, they found, did not belong to Sagin. For the next 17 years, the Innocence Project fought to free him. "We had a deal," Fleming said. "That deal was that we weren't going to give up, but he had to keep himself alive. And that's not an easy thing to do in prison. But he did it!""Believe me… Nobody was going to stop me from surviving," Sagin said. In August, the Sixth District Court of Appeals overturned his conviction. On Friday at 9 a.m., Sagin was released from Donovan Prison, and walked straight into the arms of his sister, Barbara Kosar. She has invited Sagin to live with her and her family in Arizona. Just four days before his 74th birthday, a man who was destined to spend life in prison without parole became a free man. He hopes to pay it forward. "I want to work with some youngsters and maybe help somebody," Sagin said. Somebody who may need some inspiration to never give up. The Northern California Innocence Project believes the real killer is still out there. They say they are hopeful Monterey County law enforcement will continue their investigation into the cold case. 2479
