Many people who are used to forging ahead in times of crisis, like this coronavirus pandemic, say the feeling is unfamiliar. Emily Chandler of Vista says she never could have imagined her kids would still be distance learning in the fall. "This has been going on so long, and I'm just exhausted," Chandler says. Her three sons are in three different schools and her oldest, Timmy, has autism. Helping them all with school means studying up on things herself. Marriage and family therapist Serene Carruthers, of Sharp Mesa Vista Hospital, says what Chandler is feeling is tied to the seemingly endless nature of the pandemic."It really is because our body is built to respond to stressful events typically that last for a duration of a short period of time," says Carruthers. "Some experts call it surge capacity. Like a battery our adaptive system can provide us with the mental, physical and emotional power to survive a short-term emergency. Then it needs to be recharged which is easier said than done during a pandemic because for many people, their self-care rituals have been upended or canceled.""It is a very lonely time and I'm not getting that energy, that recharge," says Chandler. Carruthers says not to underestimate the power of play, which is free and can be done anywhere. She also recommends shifting expectations, maintaining connections with loved ones, keeping a gratitude journal about the good in your life, and exercising even if it's just walking in your home. Chandler says the reopening of her gym helped her feel like herself again, and she and Carruthers both say it's all right to ask for help, which Chandler says she's glad she did."I got on an anti-anxiety medication and I'm not embarrassed about that. Louie is hard to miss He's the only white Chinese goose left at the lake and he's a bit of a celebrity.Dave Brandenburgh works at the concession and bait store at the lake and feeds the geese every day."Best part of my day is feeding the kids ... they always want food, but Louie is the one you have to watch out for, one minute he will be eating out of your hand and the next minute he will take my leg off!" Brandenburgh says.Nearly 100 visitors a day want to know where the cranky, white goose named Louie is located. But he has a soft spot for a little abandoned duck, named Alphie."This new little person thinks he's a goose, his bottom feathers haven't developed yet. "It kind of feels like a sanctuary," she says. But Bilodeau's days in San Diego could be numbered, all because of a specialty shot she takes every 12 weeks. "It makes you feel like you're in limbo all the time because you don't know the exact cost of the drug until you get a bill."Bilodeau suffers from Rheumatoid Arthritis, an autoimmune disease that causes the body to mistakenly attack the joints. She's about to turn 71 and on medical leave from her job, meaning her company health benefits are expiring. That leaves her with just Medicare, and what she believes will be a ,300 co-insurance payment on the drug."I have my days," she says. "I have meltdowns where I just cry because I'm worried and scared."Bilodeau isn't the only one with that anxiety.A new study by AARP says the price for specialty prescription drugs, ones that are generally infused or injected, rose 7 percent in 2017. That's more than three times the rate of inflation. The average annual cost for these drugs is nearly ,000. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — Memorial Day Weekend kicked off Friday night on the USS Midway. As a part of their Legacy Week, they had their annual benefit concert. This year, Daughtry took the stage. Kevin Beam is a big fan and made sure to buy his tickets early, “you got Memorial Day Weekend, Daughtry and beautiful San Diego”. People filled the top deck of the Midway. Ahead of the concert, the USS Midway Foundation presented three ,800 checks to different local charities. The night served as a way for people to remember and honor those who gave the ultimate sacrifice. Penny Erickson was especially grateful for the event Friday, “I’m from a military family my dad was from Pearl Harbor so it means a lot to me.” Chuck Erickson is a volunteer for the USS Midway and a veteran. Friday night, he tells 10News he’s making sure he is grateful all weekend long, “a lot of people lost their lives giving us the freedom we have today”.
