NATIONAL CITY, Calif. (KGTV) -- An organization in the South Bay is using dance to educate others about the Filipino culture. PASACAT, which is based in National City, is a Philippine Performing Arts Company and educational center. Anamaria Cabato is the current executive director. For her, it is a family passion. Her parents founded the organization nearly 50 years ago. Over the years, she has had nearly a dozen family members involved in the dance troupe. “It brings me to tears,” Cabato told 10News. “This is a family in itself and to have your own members of your family [involved] is just icing on the cake.” Lupe Macario is Anamaria’s sister and the grandmother of a couple of the current dancers. “We’re just delighted that they take up and embrace the culture,” Macario said. Her granddaughter, Gabby Macario, is now performing the same dances she used to perform in the 1970s.Gabby Macario, like many of the young dancers in PASACAT, was born in the United States. She said learning traditional Filipino dances is something she loves. She’s been dancing since she was five-years-old. “It’s really fun because I like learning all the dances,” Gabby said. 10News asked what would tell others who have never seen this type of dancing.“I would first tell them to try to see what we do and introduce them to what we do,” the 10-year-old said. PASACAT has had its share of setbacks, including major damage to the studio during a storm in December. The storm damaged the roof, the floor, and ruined many traditional dance costumes. They continue to raise funds for the organization through a GoFundMe page. Still, Cabato said they persevere for a bigger cause. “There’s a lack of understanding and if we appreciate all cultures of the world because this opens the doors to other people, and to understand them. You find that there’s similarities and if you find those similarities, then there’s no reason to have differences,” Cabato said. 1954
Millions of small, black cerith snails cover one area of Fort De Soto Beach, Florida, stunning wildlife lovers. The shellfish, known as cerith snails, cover nearly the entire length of the beach. Robert Neff snapped several pictures of the bizarre event. “I grew up in Florida and I’ve never seen anything like this. It was amazing to see,” he said.What makes this so odd is Cerith snails don’t typically wash up onto land. They’re usually along the bottom of the ocean in flat reefs or hiding in coral reefs where the temperature is warm. The snails are in an area off the south end of the parking lot at Fort DeSoto’s North beach, which borders the bird sanctuary. Neff said the low tide exposed the snails over the weekend, and many are still at the beach. His photographs, along with video taken by Mark Freels of See Through Adventures, have been widely shared across social media. One former research assistant from the Georgia Sea Turtle Center said it's possible the snails came to the shallow waters because they found food, which was washed up by recent hurricanes, on the beach. Freels said it was a very strange and magnificent sight.“My job is to take people on kayak adventures and you never know what you’ll find. This was very interesting to see,” he said. 1330
NASA's OSIRIS-REx mission and the asteroid Bennu have had a date planned for two years, and just after noon ET today, they finally got to meet face to face. OSIRIS-REx fired its thrusters for a small burn, putting it about 4.3 miles from Bennu, marking the end of its journey to the asteroid.The mission -- which stands for Origins, Spectral Interpretation, Resource Identification, Security-Regolith Explorer -- is NASA's first asteroid sample return mission. It launched in September 2016 and will spend two years up close and personal with Bennu. First images of the asteroid from the spacecraft's perspective have appeared as it got closer and closer.On Tuesday, the spacecraft will fly within 5 miles of Bennu, which will help design future orbits and map the surface.Over the next year, OSIRIS-REx will survey the asteroid using five scientific instruments on board the spacecraft. These instruments will help it determine a safe location from which to collect a small sample from Bennu's surface that will be returned to Earth in September 2023."Bennu's low gravity provides a unique challenge for the mission," said Rich Burns, OSIRIS-REx project manager at NASA's Goddard Space Flight Center. "At roughly 0.3 mile in diameter, Bennu will be the smallest object that any spacecraft has ever orbited."The sample from Bennu, a near-Earth asteroid, could help scientists understand not only more about asteroids that could impact Earth but about how planets formed and life began.OSIRIS-REx has a camera suite, a laser altimeter for 3D mapping, a thermal emission spectrometer to take temperature and mineral content and spectrometers to measure X-rays, nearly infrared and visible light.An arm mechanism called TAGSAM will reach out to collect the sample from Bennu's surface, making contact with the asteroid for five seconds in July 2020. During this contact, the arm will use a nitrogen gas burst to stir up rock and other materials on the surface so it can capture them. There is enough nitrogen for three attempts if the first is unsuccessful.NASA said the estimated 2.1-ounce sample size equates to about 30 sugar packets worth of dirt and rocks.The arm has a full range of motion, with joints capable of movement comparable to shoulder, elbow and wrist joints. It was "flexed" in space for the first time on November 14."The TAGSAM exercise is an important milestone, as the prime objective of the OSIRIS-REx mission is to return a sample of Bennu to Earth," said Dante Lauretta, OSIRIS-REx principal investigator at the University of Arizona, Tucson. "This successful test shows that, when the time comes, TAGSAM is ready to reach out and tag the asteroid."In 2021, it will be time for the spacecraft to essentially turn around and begin its two-year journey home. The sample will be packed into a capsule that will drop in the Utah desert in 2023.For two years after the return, the sample will be cataloged and analyzed. Afterward, 75% of the returned sample will remain at NASA's Johnson Space Flight Center so it can be used for more research by scientists from around the world.Why did NASA select Bennu out of the 780,000 known asteroids in our solar system?It was discovered in 1999, and scientists have been studying it ever since. The asteroid fits a number of criteria that make it intriguing and convenient.Bennu is relatively close to Earth, and its orbit even crosses that of our planet, making a close approach every six years. Though small asteroids can rotate very quickly, Bennu has a diameter just a bit bigger than the height of the Empire State Building and rotates relatively slowly, each 4.3 hours. This means OSIRIS-REx can match its velocity and touch down briefly.The asteroid could pass close to Earth, closer than the moon, in 2135, with even closer approaches possible in 2175 and 2195. A direct hit is unlikely, but the data gathered during this mission can help determine the best ways to deflect near-Earth asteroids.The asteroid is also old and well-preserved, full of valuable materials that may even contain clues about how life began. Bennu is essentially a leftover from the formation of our solar system billions of years ago, although some of the minerals inside it could be even older.This carbon-rich asteroid could be full of organic molecules, metals, platinum and even water -- the essential ingredients for life. It's because of objects like Bennu that these resources were delivered to Earth during its formation.Asteroids could even serve as fuel stations for robotic and human missions if we can unlock the hydrogen and oxygen inside them, NASA said.Bennu probably broke off of a larger asteroid in the asteroid belt between Mars and Jupiter a couple billion years ago. This knocked it through space until an orbit close to Earth locked it in place. And Bennu is believed to be a grouping of rocks held together by gravity rather than a single object.But its orbit drifts 0.18 miles each year toward the sun, and OSIRIS-REx will enable researchers to understand why and to predict Bennu's movements. This could also explain how it ended up as a near-Earth asteroid."The story of this asteroid is the story of the solar system," said Bashar Rizk, instrument scientist for OSIRIS-REx. MURRIETA, Calif. (KGTV) — Border Patrol agents arrested a man Wednesday after more than 70 pounds of cocaine were found inside inside his vehicle.Border Patrol agents stop a suspicious vehicle at about 7 p.m. on Interstate 215 near the Muerrieta Hot Springs exit. A K-9 officer was used to search the vehicle and detected possible narcotics.During the search, agents said they located 27 bundles of cocaine stashed inside the vehicle's front and rear seats and underneath seats.The bundles weighed about 70 pounds, with a street value of about 6,450. The driver, a 32-year-old U.S. citizen, was arrested and turned over to Drug Enforcement Administration.The bust capped off drug seizures totaling about 117 pounds within the last 72 hours, according to Customs and Border Protection.“In the last 72 hours San Diego Sector has seized over 117 pounds of lethal narcotics worth more than ,300,000,” said Chief Patrol Agent Aaron Heitke. “Thankfully these dangerous drugs will not reach our local communities.” 1020
NASHVILLE, Tenn. — A new piece of evidence in the case of a missing Tennessee 5-year-old indicates that Joe Clyde Daniels could still be alive.The boy disappeared in April and investigators have long presumed he is dead. But, his body has never been found. Scripps station WTVF in Nashville obtained photos of the letter that was sent anonymously to Joe Clyde's grandparents.The handwritten letter was postmarked out of Nashville. It was sent this week to the grandparents in Dickson, Tennessee. The anonymous writer claims Joe Clyde's mother, Krystal Daniels, arranged to give the little boy away."I believe Krystal got Joe's clothes, packed them into a bag... and left Joe on the side of the road," the letter says.The writer claims that he is alive and living in west Tennessee, possibly in Jackson. "If we could get Krystal to confess what really happened...with this case. I know it's a bizarre case," the letter reads. The letter goes on to name those involved. WTVF has chosen not to reveal the names because the individuals have not been named by police as part of the investigation. Jake Lockert, the attorney for Joseph Daniels — Joe Clyde's father who is charged in his death — confirmed the grandparents have turned the letter over to authorities. Investigators have yet to comment on the new evidence. Police say Krystal Daniels had motive against Joe Clyde. Investigators tell NewsChannel 5 she was frustrated with raising a child with autism and was angry the family was forced to give away their dogs because of him. The letter doesn't mention the child's father. Earlier this year, investigators said Joseph Daniels confessed to killing his son. However, his attorney argues the confession was coerced. To this day, investigators said Joseph Daniels has not been able to tell them what happened to his son's remains. 1940
