With a majority of public school districts offering remote learning this fall, parents and teachers are ramping up online educational tools and resources for kids. Many are also focusing just as much on kids' mental health."It's going to be so much harder to build those relationships while you're on a virtual platform. What are we doing to start the year off with expectations of what students should do and how are they going to react with each other?" said Dr. Christina Conolly, a school psychologist in Maryland and a member of the National Association of School Psychologists. Dr. Conolly says with so many children missing that social interaction this fall, it's important for educators and parents to be intentional when it comes to keeping an eye on students' mental health."Anything we can do to help students engage with each other, bring a socialized setting that is supervised, is great," said Dr. Conolly. Before the COVID-19 pandemic, Dr. Conolly, like other parents, put major restrictions on screen time. Now, she says many of those limitations have gone out the window. Speaking about her own daughter, she says safe, online interaction is crucial to children's social development. "Right now, if she's on there spending a couple hours gaming with my neighbors because she can't go outside and play with my neighbors, well I'm like 'OK, it's helping her with her emotional health.' Because human beings need human interaction," said Dr. Conolly.Child suicide rates are up nationwide and calls into the National Suicide Prevention hotlines are skyrocketing, Dr. Conolly said. Many children who didn't have mental health struggles before the pandemic are finding themselves coping with them now and those who already had difficulties are getting worse. She has advice for parents who are concerned about their children getting depressed because of a lack of social interaction. "I would say a number of things. First, talk to the staff at your school. You can talk to the teacher, administration, psychologist or counselor in the building. If you're concerned, they can talk with your student," said Dr. Conolly.Teressa Ruspi is a parent of three and runs the LRJ Foundation, a mental health and wellness organization that partners with schools in Georgia, Virginia and Pennsylvania to teach kids about the importance of social emotional health. Ruspi is putting her own children's mental health at the top of her mind as her three head back to school virtually."I'm really trying to hone in and be really mindful of their emotions right now and what's triggering those emotions. How to balance those emotions, how to have those conversations with them, so they can feel comfortable talking to me about what's frustrating with them," said Ruspi. Ruspi says her kids are FaceTiming frequently with classmates and even doing occasional playdates with families who are taking similar precautions from COVID-19 as they are."Kids can get kind of complacent and used to their new surroundings so now that they have been removed and been remote and disconnected a lot, we want to make sure that they don't stay disconnected," Ruspi said.The good news, is that now that school is back in session, many parents will have access to free sessions with a school psychologist or counselor. WEST POINT, N.Y. (AP) — More than 70 West Point cadets have been accused of cheating on a math exam taken online when they were studying remotely because of the coronavirus pandemic.A spokesman at the U.S. Military Academy says 55 cadets admitted cheating on the calculus exam in May. Most of them have been enrolled in a rehabilitation program and will be on probation for the rest of their time at West Point.The cheating came to light when instructors saw irregularities while grading the exam. One of the students was a sophomore, and the 72 others were freshmen in a class of 1,200 West Point cadets.According to the Associated Press, once an honors committee completed their investigation into the matter, two cases were dropped due to lack of evidence, four cases were dropped after cadets resigned, and three cadets admitted to cheating but aren't eligible for the rehab program.Several over cadets will face hearings with the administration to see if they will be penalized or expelled, the AP reported.According to the AP, the only other cheating scandal to occur at West Point happened in 1976 when 153 cadets were expelled or resigned for cheating on an electrical engineering exam.More than 90 of those caught cheating in 1976 were reinstated and allowed to graduate, the AP reported. 1305

While many Americans do it, taking a selfie with a completed ballot is considered a crime in most states. According to CNN, there are laws prohibiting taking or distributing photos of your ballot while at the polls in 27 states. For voters in 23 states and DC, photos from the voting booth are generally permissible. A person could be charged with a felony in Illinois and Wisconsin for taking photos at the ballot booth.While some of the 23 states have previously had laws prohibiting photography of ballots, there have been recent court rulings questioning the constitutionality of such laws. One example came during 2016 in New Hampshire. The state argued that the law was necessary to prevent ballot photography to be used as a means of voter fraud or intimidation. The plaintiffs argued that prohibiting ballot photography denied voters their free speech rights. A federal appeals court ruled 3-0 that the state had not shown that it was using the least restrictive means to achieve a compelling state interest of prohibiting voting fraud. According to the ruling, New Hampshire Secretary of State William Gardner was unable to show examples of how ballot photography led to voting fraud. "The restriction affects voters who are engaged in core political speech, an area highly protected by the First Amendment," the ruling states. "There is an increased use of social media and ballot selfies in particular in service of political speech by voters. A ban on ballot selfies would suppress a large swath of political speech."Indiana also had a law passed in 2015 that would have made ballot selfies a felony struck down by a federal judge.In Colorado, the state made it legal in 2017 to take ballot pictures. But in Alabama, Arizona, Florida, Georgia, Illinois, Iowa, Maryland, Michigan, Nevada, New Jersey, New York, North Carolina, Ohio, South Carolina, South Dakota, Tennessee, Texas and West Virginia, it is illegal to take photos at the polling place, according to CNN. In Alaska, Louisiana, Massachusets, Minnesota, Mississippi, Missouri, Oklahoma, Utah and Vermont, pictures at the ballot box are okay, but cannot include a photo of a completed ballot.  To see a state-by-state breakdown of the laws regulating ballot selfies, click here.  2343

While fans are not allowed to attend any MLB games in the shortened 2020 season, the Oakland Athletics came up with a brilliant way to "bring in" fans.The team unveiled its "Coliseum Cutouts" program, where A's fans will get a chance to display the cardboard cutout of themselves during games.The team's staff will try to fill the stands with the cutouts. Prices range from to 9 for each cutout. If a cutout in the program's foul ball zone gets hit with a foul ball, the A's will send the ball to that fan.Proceeds from this program will benefit the team's charity partners.With every purchase of a cutout, the fan will also receive two complimentary tickets to the A's first exhibition game at the Coliseum during the 2021 season.
