SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Kids and teens struggling with their mental health during the Coronavirus Pandemic and weeks of protests over racial injustice have a new way to cope.BlueShield CA has expanded its Blue Sky program, increasing funding to local mental health organizations and giving kids a platform to share tips on dealing with anxiety and depression."There's a greater need now than ever," says Blue Sky Program Manager Amanda Lasik. "There's a greater need to speak to youth voices and listen and learn from what's going on."According to the CDC, 7.1% of kids age 3-17 have been diagnosed with anxiety, and 3.2% of kids in the same age group have been diagnosed with depression. Experts believe those numbers will rise because of the pandemic and protests.As part of the expansion, Blue Sky partnered with DoSomething.org to launch the "New State of Mind" campaign. Kids send tips for coping to the website, which get published through emails, texts, and social media."The response has been overwhelming," says Lasik. "When we were originally planning this campaign, we thought it'd be great if we got about 17,000 tips. We've already received over 60,000."In addition to the "New State of Mind" effort, Blue Sky has provided 0,000 to 18 youth organizations in San Diego and Alameda county. The money has helped them adapt their services to the challenges of the past few months."It's been a quick transition, but these groups are now offering counseling online, doing arts programming online, and engaging young people online in different ways," says Lasik."We've also heard from the nonprofit community that they just need a little bit of operating support."The money is in addition to the million that BlueShield pledged as part of the Blue Sky initiative last December.RELATED: South Bay schools partner with insurance company to address student mental health challengesFor high school student Joel Castro, connecting with these programs has been empowering."It gives me hope," says Castro. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- Mixed Martial Arts fighter, Dean "The Boogeyman" Lister is asking the public to help him find a man he found inside his apartment. Lister, a Jiu Jitsu champion, has taken down opponents around the world - but he never expected a fight in his home. "I thought somebody was working in the apartment," he said, describing the man as covered in tattoos and wearing only a pair of boxers.Lister said the man wasn't making any sense, and soon Lister started to record him. In the video the man is heard saying that he went into the apartment because he thought it was a church. When the man realized that he was being record, Lister said he reached for a hammer - a moment that can be seen just before the video ends. Lister is a gun owner, and said he reached for his weapon when the stranger threatened him. At that point, the man got scared and Lister let him escape out the same window he broke in through. When police arrived, the man was gone. "I'm not trying to sound like any kind of saint," Lister said. "But whatever kind of money I lost, maybe it's not worth someone dying."Lister posted the video on Youtube and shared it with 10News in hopes that someone would recognize the intruder. "Hopefully he turns his life around," Lister said.   1327

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- Many Black female voters in San Diego voters are celebrating Joe Biden’s decision to choose California Sen. Kamala Harris as his running mate.“This is a historic moment. I’m excited that I’m alive to see this happen,” said Ellen Nash, the chair of the San Diego chapter of the Black American Political Association of California.“All along that was the right choice,” Nash told ABC 10News. “I’m honored that she’s there to represent Black women and the Black vote. For Joe Biden to honor us by selecting her as his VP is the greatest historic moment.”Many Black voters wrote to Biden, urging him to choose Harris.Nash said having Harris as the first Black and Asian American woman to appear on a major party’s presidential ticket gives women of color a voice.“It was just a moment of relaxation and celebration,” said Nash. “She is prepared, skilled, and credentialed.”But does this choice possible boost Biden’s chances of winning this election? Dr. Kyra Greene, the executive director at the Center on Policy Initiatives, said Harris would bring new life to this race while appealing to a wide range of voters.“She’s young enough to attract young folks but old enough to show experience and to be taken seriously,” said Greene. “I think it will help with women who were disappointed not to see other women advance further in this race, and I also think it will help with Black voters.”“I think Senator Harris speaks to people who are interested in change because she herself has gone through an evolution on these issues,” she said.Greene said the decision not only makes history but will reenergize some of the most politically engaged San Diegans. 1678

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- Hundreds showed up for a prayer vigil Wednesday night, organized by the Broadway Heights Community Council. The Prayer Vigil for Love, Peace and Justice was outdoors on Martin Luther King Jr. Way. A dozen faith leaders participated, each taking a moment to speak to the crowd and then share prayer with the crowd. Organizers say they put this together in response to the racial injustice around the country, mentioning the death of George Floyd and the arrest of Amaurie Johnson at the trolley station in La Mesa. The vigil was peaceful and organizers say that was the goal. Families that attended the event and faith leaders say they are hopeful that coming together will lead to meaningful change and healing. 740
