The key word there is reasonable.“The problem with what's going on right now and some of the things that have been going around the internet, is that the advice, kind of spurious advice that's being put forth is to use the provision for reasonable accommodation as a sword rather than as a shield,” said David Tarrien, an associate professor at WMU-Cooley Law School.Tarrien says the conditions that qualify as a mask exemption have a smaller scope than many realize. For example, he says asthma patients likely do not fall under that scope. But later stages of pulmonary respiratory disease, emphysema, or a serious mobility issue can be "legitimate" reasons.Furthermore, you could face repercussions for lying.“If they're claiming that they have a disability and they don't have a disability, if that is found out, then there are criminal and civil penalties for that,” said Tarrien.As for privacy concerns, Tarrien says store employees are allowed to ask customers why they're not wearing a mask. If you refuse to answer, they may refuse entry.Even if you give a legitimate reason to not wear a mask, you may still be refused entry. That's because the ADA does not apply if there's a “direct threat” to someone's health or safety.Tarrien says HIPPA privacy laws also do not apply in this kind of situation. There's a new program aimed at helping Black and Latinx students succeed.The Equity in Education Initiative was built through a partnership between Walmart and North Carolina A&T State University.The program acknowledges many of these students start at a disadvantage, because they go through under-funded school districts.“These students are coming in sometimes with academic gaps that are due to no fault of their own. It's not a difference in ability, it's just a difference in their zip code,” said Kevin James, Dean of the Deese College of Business and Economics at North Carolina A&T.The program is broken up into four focus areas, addressing specific needs of different students. They include financial resources and mentorship while in school, and then network building to create career opportunities their white counterparts may already have.“So many people actually obtain their jobs through networks, because they know someone who knows someone, and many of these students, most of them come in without those built in networks and their families don't have those networks,” said James.The hope is that the positive effects of the program will extend outside of school, allowing successful students to invest and give back.“It's not just about the impact on the student. It's about multi-generational impact on families and about extending those impacts into communities that often times have been under resourced,” said James.Some parts of the program, like the Black Male Initiative, will make resources automatically available to students.There will be an application process for the Leadership Cohort and scholarships.The program starts early next year. 1683

Three restaurants associated with celebrity chef Mario Batali will be closing in Las Vegas.Batali has been accused of sexual misconduct. Those in the United States on a student visa could be booted from the country this fall if they are not attending in-person classes, the US Immigration and Customers Enforcement agency announced Monday.At universities that are planning on going online only, students will need to transfer to a university with in-person classes or face being deported from the US. This also means at universities where students have the choice between online and in-person courses, they will need to mostly take in-person courses. This could be an issue for students considered at a high risk of developing complications from the coronavirus. Amid the coronavirus, most universities have stated plans to resume in the fall with in-person courses. But with cases surging around the country brings uncertainty on whether universities will be able to conduct in-person classes.On Monday, Harvard announced plans to hold online courses with limited in-person services. Harvard’s plan will allow for freshmen to live on campus while the rest of the university will mostly be kept away from Harvard.“Harvard was built for connection, not isolation. Without a vaccine or effective clinical treatments for the virus, we know that no choice that reopens the campus is without risk,” the president and deans wrote. “That said, we have worked closely with leading epidemiologists and medical experts to define an approach that we believe will protect the health and safety of our community, while also protecting our academic enterprise and providing students with the conditions they need to be successful academically.”Princeton also announced Monday that most of its courses will be held online. Princeton said it would work with international students who might not be allowed to enter the US due to visa restrictions.“For undergraduates living abroad who are unable to return to campus, there will be some limitations on which courses are available to students who are not in residence,” Princeton said in a press release.
