SAN FRANCISCO, Jan. 12 (Xinhua) -- Microsoft on Thursday announced a patent licensing agreement with LG Electronics covering the South Korean manufacturer's tablets, smartphones and other consumer devices running Google's Android or Chrome operating system.In a press release, Microsoft said it marks the 11th deal with a device manufacturer leveraging Google's operating system platform, noting that "more than 70 percent of all Android smartphones in the U.S. are now receiving coverage under Microsoft 's patent portfolio."Terms of the deal were not disclosed. So far, Microsoft has struck major cross-licensing patent agreements with HTC, Samsung and Acer, among others.Last September, Microsoft announced a broad patent deal with Samsung. U.S. media reports cited South Korean media as saying that Microsoft had wanted Samsung to pay 10 to 15 U.S. dollars for each Android device.The booming mobile market has been harassed by acrimonious legal battles over patent infringement. Being an open source operating system, Google's Android has become a major target of patent suits.Microsoft has been going after companies that make phones and tablets running Android, rather than directly against Google. But the two tech giants are still engaged in public spats over the issue after Google's top legal officer posted a scathing blog last August accusing Microsoft and other companies of waging "a hostile, organized campaign against Android."Motorola Mobility, which Google announced to acquire in a 12.5 billion-dollar deal last August, currently is the last major Android device vendor that refuses to take a license from Microsoft.Frank Shaw, Microsoft's head of communications, used Twitter to taunt Google on Thursday, twitting "Hey Google -- we are the 70 percent" with a link to their press release.Brad Smith, Microsoft's executive vice president and general counsel, also tweeted "it's time to recognize that in patent world, lawsuits are the 1 percent; license agreements are the 99 percent. SEOUL, Jan. 6 (Xinhua) -- LG Electronics, the world's No.2 TV maker, said Friday that it will showcase a smart TV that runs Google TV during next week's Consumer Electronics Show (CES) in Las Vegas.The LG-made Google TV powered by Google's Android operating system (OS) will be unveiled next Monday at the U.S. consumer electronics fair in Las Vegas, according to an e-mailed statement by LG.The Internet TV will offer its Android-based user interface, enabling consumers to enjoy web browsing and social networking, LG said. Multi-taking will also be available as the Internet surfing, social networking and TV functions can be run simultaneously.LG's three-dimensional (3D) technology will be available through its Google TV. With a single click of a remote controller, any two-dimensional (2D) program or movie can be viewed in 3D due to the built-in 2D to 3D conversion engine."Through Google TV, LG has merged Google's established Android operating system with LG's proven 3D and Smart TV technologies, offering consumers a new and enthralling TV experience," said Havis Kwon, chief executive of LG Electronics' home entertainment business.

JAKARTA, Oct. 6 (Xinhua) -- United Nations Children's Fund (UNICEF) representative for Indonesia Angela Kearney said on Thursday that Indonesia's infant mortality rate is still high although it showed a downward trend in the past few years, local media reported.Based on a UNICEF global child mortality report, over the past 10 years infant mortality rate declined significantly to 35 out of every 1,000 births in 2011 from 97 out of every 1,000 births in 1991, she said at workshop on household to hospital cantinuum care held in Makassar, South Sulawesi.The achievement was inseparable from the central and regional government's endeavors, she said.After all, the results of a health demography survey showed 193, 000 children lost life chance every year before they reached the age of 5 years, she said.In South Sulawesi alone, 17.3 out of every 1,000 newborns died before they reached the age of 28 days last year. Two-thirds of the deaths occurred on the first week of their life and one out of every four mothers gave birth to their children without the help of trained medical workers.Mothers' poor access to health facilities in the country posed one of the obstacles to the promotion of the nation's health. One out of every five mothers came from poor families, she said.She said that a lack of infrastructures and equipment and the low number of trained medical workers had hindered the fulfillment of health services, the Antara news service said.To deal with the challenge, the method of providing health services must be improved and the support of trained medical workers must be increased, she said."I am very happy to see UNICEF cooperating with the South Sulawesi provincial government to develop comprehensive approaches to overcome the shortcomings at social level and public health system at provincial health facilities," she said.
