McDonald's is celebrating International Women's Day with a big, gleaming, W."For the first time in our brand history, we flipped our iconic arches," said McDonald's Chief Diversity Officer Wendy Lewis. The giant arches have been physically flipped at just one California restaurant. On Thursday, International Women's Day, upside-down arches will replace rightside-up arches across McDonald's digital channels.Lewis said McDonald's is flipping its logo "in honor of the extraordinary accomplishments of women everywhere."The restaurant chain will also mark the occasion at another 100 US locations, where McDonald's employees will wear special hats and shirts.Related: McDonald's is taking cheeseburgers out of the Happy MealIn recent years, companies have started using International Women's Day to broadcast their views on gender equality."International Women's day is a perfect opportunity for brands to talk about their commitment to empowerment," said Tim Calkins, a marketing professor at Northwestern University's Kellogg School of Management."It's a perfect venue to get out there and enhance your brand perception," he said.In a statement, McDonald's said that 6 out of 10 managers of US restaurants are women."We have a long history of supporting women in the workplace," the company added.Related: McDonald's is going greenBrands may also be eager to replicate the success of others, Calkins said."When companies see high-profile campaigns that get some traction and get some discussion, they are very quick to jump on the bandwagon."One example of a particularly successful campaign is the "Fearless Girl," sculpture, which was installed across the "Charging Bull," in New York City by State Street ahead of International Women's Day last year. The statue was designed by the financial services company and the advertising firm McCann to call attention to State Street's efforts to improve gender diversity on corporate boards. Mayor Megan Barry has surrendered the passcode for her personal phone to the Tennessee Bureau of Investigation, her attorney says in a statement released Friday morning."This morning I spoke with TBI Director Mark Gwyn to provide the TBI with the passcode for Mayor Barry's personal cell phone," Jerry Martin said in the statement."This is her personal phone, not her Metro issued phone. I have confidence that Director Gwyn will ensure that the TBI limits its search of her personal phone to only items that are relevant to its investigation."Martin added that "reports that the Mayor has been uncooperative during this process are untrue."He said that the mayor's legal team has "provided the TBI with thousands of pages of documents at its request."Mayor's Lawyer?Asks DA To Recuse Himself From CaseSpecial Section:City Hall ScandalThe former U.S. attorney said that Barry's legal team was just trying to clarify how non-relevant matters would be handled before the public release of a damning search warrant affidavit that implies investigators may have nude pictures of the mayor."We were in the process of preparing to turn over her phone when the TBI, presumably at the director of the District Attorney, sought a search warrant," Martin added."This tactic was surprising since the evening before the search warrant was issued, I communicated our willingness to turn over the phone."However, by seeking the phone via a search warrant the authorities were ultimately afforded the opportunity for the unorthodox release of the underlying affidavit."While it may be common for search warrants themselves to be made public, the underlying affidavits are typically not returned and made public at this stage of the investigation."Read the full statement below: 1775
Meat-based idioms, like "flogging a dead horse" or "taking the bull by the horns," can be compared with homophobic and racist language, according to animal rights organization PETA."Just as it became unacceptable to use racist, homophobic, or ableist language, phrases that trivialize cruelty to animals will vanish as more people begin to appreciate animals for who they are and start 'bringing home the bagels' instead of the bacon," PETA said on Twitter. The group took to Twitter Tuesday, offering a graphic showing some possible alternatives to meat-related expressions.Instead of "kill two birds with one stone" say "feed two birds with one scone," and instead of "being the guinea pig," say "be the test tube," PETA said."Words matter, and as our understanding of social justice evolves, our language evolves along with it," it added. The comparison with racism and homophobia was met with anger on Twitter, with some arguing that PETA was trivializing race and gender issues.Others said the animal rights organization was giving vegetarians and vegans a bad name.PETA's tweet comes after a UK-based academic argued last month that an increased awareness of vegan issues may lead to new modes of expression. 1220
MADISON, Wis. (AP) — Wisconsin has finished its recount of votes cast in this month’s presidential election, with only miniscule changes in the results that saw Democrat Joe Biden defeat Republican Donald Trump in the battleground state.Dane County, which includes the state capital of Madison, reported only small changes in its vote totals on Sunday, mirroring the earlier results of the recount conducted in Milwaukee County.Trump gained 45 votes in Dane County, according to the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel.Biden won the state by nearly 20,600 votes and his margin in Milwaukee and Dane counties was about 2-to-1.As a result of the million recount, which was paid for by the Trump campaign, Biden’s lead over Trump in the swing state actually grew by 87 votes, The Washington Post reports.Trump’s next move in Wisconsin will likely be in court. However, the state is expected to certify the results on Tuesday. It will be the last to certify among the six states where Trump has tried to upend the certification process. 1034
