ROSARITO, Mexico (KGTV) - With the San Diego region's high cost of living, many are making their move south of the border to save money.For Marilyn Widd, every moment with her granddaughter Gracie is special when she visits her at a home in Vista."The area is beautiful. I love it," said Widd.Four years ago, Widd and her husband briefly thought about retiring in San Diego County. Didn't want a big mortgage in retirement."Instead they headed south, just south of Rosarito, where they bought a two-bedroom, 1,800-square-foot oceanfront home for 0,000."It's very tranquil. We also have two Costcos ... a lot of the same products," said Widd.When it comes to health care costs, the Widds have options. The two have Medicare and get some of their medical treatments in San Diego. They also pay per month for a membership at a private hospital in Rosarito, a popular option with U.S. citizens.RELATED: Making It in San Diego: Prescription medication costs impacting San Diego families"The doctors treat me very well ... state-of-the-art diagnostics and all the same medication," said Widd.For Widd, the numbers add up."We have enough money to make ends meet and have a good lifestyle. We do get to travel," said Widd.She's not alone. Various estimates put the number of Americans living in Rosarito between 12,000 and 15,000. In the past few years, U.S. citizens have reported that number is increasing, especially among those under the age of 50 who commute to San Diego. Widd has seen it firsthand. Usually the number is closer to one volunteer. You have to think it's about the cost of living for them," said Widd.Like those commuters, Widd is a part-time San Diegan. Twice a month, Marilyn and her husband get in the car and make the 2-hour drive to visit their family. The trips are a priceless part of a life she now calls her dream retirement. "At the end of the day, we made the best choice for us. I expect to live in Rosarito forever," said Widd. 2628

 LA JOLLA, Calif. (KGTV) -- The work of Jonas Salk helped cure polio 63 years ago, when the polio vaccine was created. The vaccine changed countless lives, changing the nation. Salk's work pushed further though, helping to create the March of Dimes. An organization that continues to work with the Salk Insitute in La Jolla - so it's researchers can one day eradicate other diseases. 10News Anchor Steve Atkinson spoke with polio survivor Dennis Nutter about his experiences with the disease as a child in the 1940s. "I was five-years-old in 1948. I just remember being extremely tired. I couldn't get up and walk," Nutter said. "Finally, I was just bedridden. The town doctor just said, 'let's just take him to the hospital and with a spinal tap they said it was polio.'"Professor Martin Hetzer is the vice president and chief science officer of the Salk Institute. "The March of Dimes is called the March of Dimes because it was literally...many, very small contributions that allowed people like Jonas Salk to pursue their science," he said. "And in his case, it led to the eradication of and the elimination of polio."The discovery saved millions of lives. "There are so many things that they, children today, don't have to endure that my generation had to," Nutter said. Zach Balogh and his roommate were sitting in their living room in Clemson, South Carolina, as winds started to howl when they heard the piercing beeps and buzzes of storm alerts.They ran to their window to take in the tumultuous scene outside. YouTube star Brooke Houts is the subject of a police investigation over a video that appears to show her abusing her Doberman.Los Angeles Police Officer Rosario Cervantes said the department's animal cruelty task force is looking into the matter but didn't offer further details.Houts posted the video to her YouTube channel, which has more than 330,000 subscribers. The video has since been taken down, though it's unclear whether that was done by her or by YouTube.However, viewers shared the video on social media, where it drew widespread criticism.In the 50-second video, Houts says she is attempting to prank her dog. "I put plastic wrap on the door. I'm gonna have him run out," she says. "We're just gonna see what he does."The video cuts, and Houts is then heard asking, "it doesn't faze you?" The dog jumps on her chest, and she responds by slapping him across the face.Later, Houts gets closer to the camera and engages in another altercation with the dog.
