Former Peruvian president Alan Garcia died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound to the head as police were preparing to arrest him on corruption charges Wednesday. His death was confirmed by current President Martin Vizcarra, who expressed his condolences over Twitter."Devastated by the death of former President Alan Garcia, I send my condolences to his family and loved ones," Vizcarra wrote.Garcia, 69, was rushed to the hospital in the capital Lima on Wednesday in critical condition, the state news agency Andina reported."The former president made the decision to shoot himself," his lawyer Erasmo Reyna said outside the Casimiro Ulloa hospital.Carlos Morán, the interior minister, said in an interview with CNN affiliate TV Peru that police arrived at Garcia's home at 6.30 a.m. to execute an arrest warrant. When police arrived, Garcia asked them to call his attorney and then he entered his bedroom, Morán said. Moments later, a gunshot was heard. Officers forced entry into the bedroom and found Garcia in a sitting position with a wound to the head. The ministry of health later issued a statement confirming Garcia had an entry and exit wound to the head.Garcia, who served as president from 1985 to 1990 and from 2006 to 2011, was under investigation for bribery in connection with a massive corruption scandal that has engulfed a number of former Latin American leaders.Sources close to the investigation told CNN that Peruvian authorities had issued an order for his immediate arrest.Garcia is accused of receiving kickbacks from one of Latin America's largest construction firms -- the Brazil-based company Odebrecht -- during the building of an electric train for the Lima metro while he was president during his second term. He has denied the claims. In his most recent tweet, posted on Tuesday, Garcia said there was "no shred of evidence" against him, accused Peruvian prosecutors of "SPECULATION," and said he had "never sold out and that is proven."In November last year, Garcia had requested asylum at the Uruguayan embassy after a judge banned him from leaving the country for 18 months. The Uruguayan government denied the request in December.Global corruption scandalOdebrecht is accused of doling out nearly 0 million in bribes between 2001 and 2016 to get contracts from governments to build roads, bridges, dams and highways.Authorities say Odebrecht officials shipped cash across the globe -- from one shell bank account to the next -- en route to politicians' pockets in a dozen countries, including Peru, Mexico, Venezuela, Colombia, Argentina, and Mozambique. Some of the bribes filtered through the United States. The corruption scandal -- one of the biggest in modern history -- implicated several former Latin American presidents.Last year, Peruvian President 2806

Hurricane Dorian -- the strongest storm anywhere on the planet this year -- is leaving "catastrophic damage" in its wake as it makes its way across the Bahamas, where it's claimed at least one life. The monster Category 5 storm made landfall on the eastern end of Grand Bahama Island Sunday night and will continue to pound the island for most of Monday as it creeps toward the southeastern US coast. The death of an 8-year-old boy is being reported by Bahamas news outlets Eyewitness News and Bahamas Press. The boy's grandmother, Ingrid McIntosh, told Eyewitness News that her grandson died on Abaco Island. She said her 31-year-old daughter found the body of her son, who she believed drowned in the rising waters. McIntosh said her granddaughter is also missing."I just saw my grandson about two days ago," she said. "He told me he loved me. He was going back to Abaco, he turned around and said, 'Grandma, I love you.'"CNN has contacted Bahamian authorities, who have not yet confirmed these reports. 1014

For the first time, astronomers have shown that telescopes could provide enough warning to allow people to move away from an asteroid strike on Earth.Astronomers at the University of Hawaii used the ATLAS and Pan-STARRS survey telescopes to detect a small asteroid before it entered Earth's atmosphere on the morning of June 22.The asteroid, named 2019 MO, was 13 feet in diameter and 310,685 miles from Earth. The ATLAS facility observed it four times over 30 minutes around midnight in Hawaii.Initially, the Scout impact analysis software at NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory deemed the potential impact as a 2. For reference, 0 is "unlikely" and 4 is "likely." Davide Farnocchia, navigation engineer at JPL, requested additional observations because he noticed a detection near Puerto Rico 12 hours later. The Pan-STARRS telescope was also operating and captured part of the sky where the asteroid could be seen. The additional images from the Pan-STARRS telescope helped researchers better determine the entry path for the asteroid, which bumped the Scout rating to 4.The calculation matched up, and weather radar in San Juan detected the asteroid as it burned up in our atmosphere. It entered the atmosphere over the ocean, 236 miles south of the city.ATLAS, which is two telescopes 100 miles apart on the Big Island and Maui, scans the entire sky every two nights for asteroids that could impact Earth. It can spot small asteroids half a day before they arrive at Earth and could point to larger asteroids days before. 2019 MO was small enough that it could burn up in the atmosphere.Although much of the knowledge of their capabilities and determinations about the asteroid were was worked out after the fact, astronomers believe that ATLAS and Pan-STARRS could help predict more in the future.Asteroid missionsKnowing the size and orbit of an asteroid is the main battle, as this enables prediction. In a few years, the 1936
