SAN FRANCISCO, March 21 (Xinhua) -- Microsoft on Monday sued Barnes & Noble, claiming patent infringement by the largest book retailer in the United States.Microsoft said it filed legal actions on Monday in both the U.S. International Trade Commission and the U.S. District Court of the Western District of Washington against Barnes & Noble, as well as Foxconn and Inventec, two manufacturers of Barnes & Noble's devices.According to Microsoft, the actions focus on the patent infringement by Barnes & Noble's Nook e-reader and tablet, both of which run Google's Android operating system.The patents at issue cover a range of functionality embodied in Android devices that are essential to the user experience, including natural ways of interacting with devices by tabbing through various screens to find the information they need, surfing the Web more quickly and interacting with documents and e-books, Microsoft said in a press release."The Android platform infringes a number of Microsoft's patents, and companies manufacturing and shipping Android devices must respect our intellectual property rights," Horacio Gutierrez, Microsoft's corporate vice president and deputy general counsel, was quoted by the press release as saying.Writing in a separate company blog post, Gutierrez said that the latest actions bring to 25 the total number of Microsoft patents in litigation for infringement by Android smartphones, tablets and other devices.He noted that Microsoft has established a licensing program to address Android's ongoing infringement, and leading Android smartphone manufacturer HTC has taken a license under this program.Amazon.com also signed a patent license with Microsoft last year covering its Kindle e-reader, he added."Unfortunately, after more than a year of discussions, Barnes & Noble, Foxconn and Inventec have so far been unwilling to sign a license, and therefore, we have no other choice but to bring legal action to defend our innovations," Gutierrez said in the blog post.

WASHINGTON, May 4 (Xinhua) -- The U.S. National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) announced Wednesday that its Gravity Probe B (GP-B) mission has confirmed two key predictions derived from Albert Einstein's general theory of relativity, which the spacecraft was designed to test.The experiment, launched in 2004, used four ultra-precise gyroscopes to measure the hypothesized geodetic effect, the warping of space and time around a gravitational body, and frame- dragging, the amount a spinning object pulls space and time with it as it rotates.GP-B determined both effects with unprecedented precision by pointing at a single star, IM Pegasi, while in a polar orbit around Earth. If gravity did not affect space and time, GP-B's gyroscopes would point in the same direction forever while in orbit. But in confirmation of Einstein's theories, the gyroscopes experienced measurable, minute changes in the direction of their spin, while Earth's gravity pulled at them.The findings are available online in the journal Physical Review Letters."Imagine the Earth as if it were immersed in honey. As the planet rotates, the honey around it would swirl, and it's the same with space and time," said Francis Everitt, GP-B principal investigator at Stanford University. "GP-B confirmed two of the most profound predictions of Einstein's universe, having far- reaching implications across astrophysics research."GP-B is one of the longest running projects in NASA history, with agency involvement starting in the fall of 1963 with initial funding to develop a relativity gyroscope experiment. Subsequent decades of development led to groundbreaking technologies to control environmental disturbances on spacecraft, such as aerodynamic drag, magnetic fields and thermal variations. The mission's star tracker and gyroscopes were the most precise ever designed and produced.GP-B completed its data collection operations and was decommissioned in December 2010."The mission results will have a long-term impact on the work of theoretical physicists," said Bill Danchi, senior astrophysicist and program scientist at NASA Headquarters in Washington. "Every future challenge to Einstein's theories of general relativity will have to seek more precise measurements than the remarkable work GP-B accomplished."

Sun, her friend, and an injured passenger in the red car were immediately transported to a hospital. .Sun is the youngest daughter of Sun Fo, son of Sun Yat-sen, the leader of the 1911 Revolution that ended imperial rule in China.

  

BEIJING, Feb. 24 (Xinhua) -- Graft remains one of the Chinese people's top concerns, as indicated by online polls from two mainstream media in China prior to the country's annual parliamentary and political advisory sessions.As of 9 p.m. on Thursday, over 54,000 Internet users voiced their concerns over "the fight against corruption and efforts to build a clean government" in an online survey launched by the Xinhua News Agency.Corruption came in at fourth place behind "curbing housing prices," "income distribution" and "control of commodity prices."The poll was launched by Xinhua and was meant to solicit public opinion ahead of the annual sessions of the National People's Congress (NPC) and the National Committee of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference (CPPCC).In a survey posted on People.com.cn, a website subsidiary of the People's Daily newspaper, "anti-graft" was among the most selected topics following "social security" and "judicial justice."Internet users pinned their hopes on the forthcoming parliamentary and political advisory sessions, which are scheduled to open in early March.They hope that their voices would be heard by the country's lawmakers and political advisors, who would represent them in the two sessions and would take all possible measures to tackle a number of social issues including the fight against corruption."I hope that the Central Committee of the Communist Party of China (CPC) combats graft comprehensively and severely to ensure a Party with a clean work style, a society with justice and assures the Chinese people that they would not be wronged," said an Internet user from Jiangxi province in a forum entitled "voicing my wishes to Premier Wen Jiabao at the 2011 two sessions " on xinhuanet.com.Internet users believe that the spread of corruption in some places had hindered China's economic development, undermined social stability and harmed the relationship between the people and officials.The fight against corruption, therefore, is a significant factor in determining whether or not China can reach its goals outlined in its Twelfth Five-year Program (2011-2015) on National Economic and Social Development, an Internet user wrote."Corruption has affected Chinese people's life through its spread into many social sectors. LOS ANGELES, April 4 (Xinhua) -- A woman's breast milk cells may be used to predict cancer in future research, according to a study published by HealthDay News on Monday.In the study, researchers at the University of Massachusetts in Amherst collected breast milk from 271 women in the United States. All had either undergone a biopsy of the breast to check for cancer, or were scheduled for one.The researchers evaluated breast milk samples from the biopsied and non-biopsied breasts.The researchers first isolated potentially cancerous cells, known as epithelial cells, and then isolated DNA to look for signals that regulate tumor suppresser genes.In the next step, the researchers analyzed three genes among the many known to undergo a process called methylation in breast cancer. Methylation in a specific region of a gene can inhibit or suppress the expression of a gene.For one gene, SFRP1, the average methylation was higher in the biopsied breast, the study found.Among the women whose biopsies detected cancer, average methylation of the RASSF1 gene in the biopsied breast was considerably higher compared to the non-biopsied breast.Among the women whose biopsies detected cancer, average methylation of the RASSF1 gene in the biopsied breast was considerably higher compared to the non-biopsied breast."It looks as if we can use the cells from breast milk to assess breast cancer risk," said Dr. Kathleen Arcaro, an associate professor of veterinary and animal sciences at the university.It's too soon, however, to assess the cancer detection rate associated with breast milk cell examination, she said."We can't say at this point for two reasons," she said. "One is, we need long-term follow-up. And the second really important reason is, we need to sample a larger panel of genes."Arcaro is to present her findings later Monday at the annual meeting of the American Association for Cancer Research in Orlando, Florida, according to HealthDay News.
