SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- A pillar to the community and a San Diego civic icon Reverend George Walker Smith has died at 91. For six decades, Rev. Smith was a trailblazing leader in the African American community. Smith also led Christ United Presbyterian Church of San Diego for decades. Those who were lucky enough to cross paths with him say he was kind to all. "We kind of thought of Rev. Smith as the black godfather of San Diego, and of this church, because he helped so many people," said Delores McNeely, a church member of 30 years. He was the first African American to be elected in the city when he won the race for the San Diego Board of Education in 1963. Rev. Smith started the Catfish Club, whose weekly lunches were a gathering spot for those interested in civic or political issues. "All the political leaders in the community came, and we had this huge forum, and they listened to him. And if something were going on in the community, the first person that they would call was Rev. Smith," said McNeely.McNeely says the forums started at the church but then moved to Channel 10 when attendance got too large. "His legacy is going to help the community to grow, everything he did, and wanted to do," said McNeely.Members of the congregation spoke to 10News Sunday. "He was a person who would never say no to anyone if you asked him to do. If he couldn't do it, he found someone who could," Jewel Kelley, a member of the church said. Rev. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- A program dedicated to giving high school girls in under-served areas skills to help get good part-time jobs is being given a ,000 grant from The San Diego Foundation."These students are going to be able to experience real world, hands-on training in highly technical fields," said Katie Rast from The San Diego Foundation.Called "Girls Take Flight", 20 students from schools in Southeast San Diego are spending their spring break in a classroom partaking in a "drone camp".The girls are learning how to build, fly, repair, and code drones. The hope is that those skills will help them get the part-time jobs that they'll likely need to pay for college.In addition, about half of the students will be awarded internships with the Elementary Institute of Science, which is administering the program.Those internships will include tours and introductions to potential mentors from prestigious San Diego-based tech companies, including Qualcomm, Northrop Grumman, and General Atomics.10News spoke with students who say opportunities such as this one are hard to find in communities such as theirs, leading to their dedication to take advantage."I know my parents did so much to bring me here," said Sundus Mohamed, a Crawford High student and daughter of Somali immigrants. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- A Kearny Mesa couple says a local hawk is preying on neighborhood cats, and hope their story prompts pet owners to be cautious. Over Memorial Day weekend Caralee and Joe Jaeckels took their cats outside to enjoy the garden. Not long after, they said a hawk swooped down. "At first we thought it was kind of cool," they said. "It's this bird flying around. But we discovered pretty quickly that it was not a cool thing."The bird began attacking the couple's cat Ludwick. Thankfully, the 16-pound cat was able to escape with only a scratch on his face. His owners say this probably meant he was too heavy for the hawk to carry him away. 677

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — A man sentenced to life behind bars after being convicted of shooting his coworker in his face. Julio Narvaez pleaded guilty to opening fire at his Phamatech company in 2017. "The consequences are something he has to bare," said judge Laura Halgren at his sentencing on Friday. Narvaez pleaded not guilty to shooting his coworker in the face at their Carmel Mountain Ranch office. Police say they got into an argument when Narvaez pulled out a gun from his desk and opened fire. The victim, Michael Limbag, is also the cousin of Narvaez's wife. He's still recovering two years later. "He has hearing loss," said Halgren. "There’s a fragment bullet in his brain that could move at any time. He has headaches every day, nightmares."The defense brought in a neurologist to testify. He said Narvaez may have a connection to Alzheimer's, but could not make a definitive diagnosis. That move then backfired for the defense. "If this really did play a role in Mr. Narvaez’s behavior, then he poses a danger and will continue to pose greater danger," said Halgren. "Whatever degenerative process he has could be offered an explanation for some of the behavior but doesn’t excuse it."Police say Narvaez tried to shoot the victim at least twice, but the gun jammed. He pleaded guilty to attempted murder and use of a firearm with bodily injury. 1362

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- A man suspected of shooting another man during an altercation on a trolley in downtown San Diego was taken into custody, San Diego police said.At around 5:15 a.m. Wednesday, officers were called to the trolley station in the 1200 block of Imperial Avenue after a 35-year-old man was shot in the leg.According to police, the victim was struck by gunfire during in a verbal altercation with another man while both were riding a trolley train. Police said the victim was able to tackle the suspect, and other trolley passengers helped get the gun away from the suspected shooter.The suspected shooter fled the scene following the incident.ABC 10News learned the victim was rushed to the hospital and is expected to survive.About 90 minutes after the shooting was reported, officers spotted the man believed to be linked to the incident near Logan Avenue and Beardsley Street and then detained him.The suspect was later identified as 18-year-old Salvador Sanchez Cantero.A motive for the altercation is unclear; the shooting is under investigation. 1072
