CARDIFF, Calif. (KGTV) - A pedestrian was struck and killed Saturday night in Cardiff after running across Interstate 5 and into the path of a car, authorities said.The incident happened just before 6:40 p.m. on the northbound lanes of the I-5 near Birmingham Drive, according to the California Highway Patrol.CHP officials said the pedestrian, a male in his 20s, was being transported via ambulance from Tri-City Hospital to the VA Medical Center when he suddenly jumped out of the vehicle. The ambulance was traveling between 50 to 60 mph, CHP said.The man survived the jump but proceeded to run across the southbound lanes. He hopped the center divide and was struck by a motorist traveling northbound.CHP said the man died in the collision.The motorist that struck the man remained at the scene and was cooperating with officers.A SigAlert was issued at about 7 p.m. for the three left lanes on northbound I-5. CHP reopened all lanes to traffic just before 9 p.m. 977

CALIPATRIA, Calif. (KGTV) — Six prison guards were injured during an attack by an inmate this week, leading to the use of deadly force.Calipatria State Prison inmate Douglas Compton refused to leave an "out-of-bounds" area in the prison's yard on Thursday after three officers ordered him to do so, according to the state's Department of Correction and Rehabilitation (CDCR).Compton then stabbed one of the officers in the head and face, CDCR says. Responding officers used batons, pepper spray, and other use-of-force options to try and subdue Compton.During the struggle, Compton punched another two officers.An officer in an observation tower discharged one lethal round from a rifle to stop the attack. No one was injured by the use of lethal force, CDCR says.Six officers were injured and taken to an outside hospital for treatment and released.Compton was injured and treated, before being transferred to another prison.CDCR added that two inmate-made weapons were recovered at the scene. CDCR investigators are investigating the weapons as well as the use of deadly force.Compton was sentenced to 112 years to life in prison following a 2013 conviction of second-degree murder, voluntary manslaughter with the use of a firearm and possession of a firearm by an ex-felon with the use of an altered ID. 1315

CAMP PENDLETON, Calif. (KGTV) - A massive training exercise coordinated between three Marine Corps. Air Stations in the Southwest took flight Monday.The goal is to ensure Marines and Sailors are ready if they need to move hundreds of troops and supplies fast. The exercise is comprised of about 1,300 troops, from MCAS Miramar, Camp Pendleton and Yuma. It took three months of planning."It really stretches all the muscles for all of the units to support something big like this," Lt. Col. Nathan Storm said.The training is almost twice as big as prior similar trainings."It gives I Marine Expeditionary Force the opportunity to get together and practice large scale operations like this for operations wherever the Marine Corps may send us in order to defend the United States," Lt. Col. Storm said.This particular mission is to take over an airbase and secure it as a supply route, "not that we’re necessarily planning for anything like that but we always have to be ready and be lethal for that eventuality," he said.Dozens of aircraft were meticulously coordinated to come in and take off in waves. Rows of MV-22 Osprey sat on the flight deck loading up Monday afternoon. Earlier two of the Marines' biggest assault support helicopters, the CH 53E Super Stallions, loaded up with dozens of troops and took off.The flights Monday were the crux of the past two weeks of training for the Marines and Sailors. "Fantastic! It is absolutely great to see these all of these different communities come together the way that they are supposed to, the way that they’re designed in the Marine Corps to support the war fighters of the 1st Marine Division," Lt. Col. Storm said.The aircraft will all meet in Twentynine Palms, near Joshua Tree, where they will train in a mock town, in scenarios similar to what they would see overseas. CARLSBAD, Calif. (KGTV) - Hundreds of people packed into a classroom in Carlsbad Wednesday night, concerned about community safety in the wake of a brutal murder. More than 200 people showed up. Many were forced to listen from the hallway because the room was so crowded. “We don’t feel as safe as we used to,” said Carlsbad resident Charlie Christenson about why he came to the meeting. “I thought it was great to have the forum,” he added. It came more than a week after 64-year-old Marj Gawitt was stabbed to death in her home on Outrigger Lane, a development overlooking the Agua Hedionda Lagoon. Two transients were arrested and charged in the murder. Prosecutors say Gawitt was stabbed 50 times and tortured. Still, she managed to call 911 herself and alert police about her assailants. “I’ve been a police officer in Carlsbad for over 28 years, and to my knowledge this is the firs time in that particular community a crime like that has happened,” said Carlsbad police Chief Neil Gallucci. For two hours, Gallucci and other top police officials fielded questions from residents about the murder and the lingering safety concerns it has brought about.Christenson said he came to ask the chief one question. “I asked him if there were any changes to outreach or enforcement in response to this issue and he said no,” said Christenson. “That was disappointing.” But Gallucci said the meeting itself was necessary to get a feel for the issues. “I think having this meeting was a big step forward,” he said. He wanted to explain to the crowd how they respond to calls and what resources they have to do it.
