LONGMONT, Colo. -- Rosemary Bieker is the owner of a boutique store called Ivy Rose.“Ivy Rose has been in business a little over three years, and it’s a boutique full on on-trend clothing for women of all generations,” Bieker said.Bieker was inspired to start her own boutique after helping people look their best as a personal shopper for 15 years.“The store is a culmination of everything I’ve done in my career.”However, owning a small business is a fairly new endeavor for Bieker. So when the pandemic hit, it hit hard.“Business is down 50% from last year, so that in itself is a financial challenge,” Bieker said.Even with gloves, hand sanitizer and social distancing rules to stay safe, the truth is, fewer people are out shopping. Bieker says she had to learn how to do business virtually. The first step was upping her social media game.“I think I worked harder from March 17, when we were closed, until we reopened, than I ever have in the history of my store. Because you’re learning – like I didn’t know how to make a video, let alone a video of myself."After improving her social media, she knew she had to dig a little deeper to keep customers engaged. However, she didn’t want to go the e-commerce route – selling clothes through a website.“My passion is working with people and helping them one-on-one and wardrobing them and getting the feedback from them," Bieker said. "And e-commerce you basically put things in boxes, you ship them out.”Bieker doesn’t stand alone. Director of Denver Metro Small Business Development Center China Califf says most small businesses in retail thrive on the one-on-one connection with customers. That’s what sets them apart.“Maybe they didn’t have a product line that transitioned well to e-commerce but I’ve seen a lot of businesses that have been like ‘OK, now I have to enter into that space so I’m going to create something that’s aligned with what I already sell in my business and we’ll start with that,'” Califf said.Califf says the small business development center has received request after request of businesses seeking support to move business online. The center offers free consulting from industry experts and provides training courses.At Ivy Rose, Bieker found her own creative online solution. She calls it virtual shopping.“I schedule an appointment through Zoom," Bieker said. "And then what I do is I tour the store with the person just like if you were walking through the store yourself. So I go from rack to rack to rack. And that sounds overwhelming, but really it isn’t, especially if you’re interacting with the person.”Then Bieker rings up the purchase and can get it to the customer through shipping, curbside pickup or delivery if it’s local. Califf says the challenging growth small businesses have faced this year will help them in the future when competing with large companies that sell their products online.“It’s here to stay probably because when you think about diversifying your products and your sales channels, this is a good way to do it," Califf said. "And it’s an unfortunate time for people to be forced into that, but some of it will be lasting.”Bieker says her system has attracted new customers from out of state and she’s confident virtual shopping will continue even after the pandemic.“It’s fun. Long lines at the polls, machines not working, and incorrect voter registration information are all painful realities for thousands of voters on primary day. Some say they’re worried these issues may keep voices from being heard in this year’s presidential election.“Voter suppression is a real thing,” said Tocarro Combs, a Georgia voter who experienced issues with her registration.For thousands of voters, especially across Georgia, casting a ballot can seem more like a fight than a right.“It’s something that we’re used to, but I don’t ever want us to get numb to it,” said Combs. “I want to feel the hurt. I want to feel the pain, because I never want the feeling of voter suppression to go unheard or dismissed."For Combs, her battle to vote started when she checked her registration before election day. “I was listed as a male in Fulton County at my previous address,” she explained.In the midst of trying to fix that error, she said the county elections office told her, “an absentee ballot was processed out of that office on my behalf."But she did not cast that ballot. Combs spent hours emailing and calling the Secretary of State and Fulton County Elections Department to fix her registration. She was never able to find out who filed that absentee ballot under her name. Her registration is still pending.“It is still unresolved today,” she said. “It’s been very heartbreaking, and I get emotional when I talk about it. It’s important to me,” said Combs. “Especially as an African-American woman, there have been so many sacrifices for me to have that right.”Come election day, when she made it to the polls, she was given a provisional ballot with no option to vote for president. The poll worker showed her the Republican and Independent ballot, and both had options to vote for the president.“I went up and voted with a Democratic ballot that wasn’t complete,” said Combs.The problems continued at another precinct in the same county for Terence Rushin. It took him seven hours and 45 minutes to vote.“I watched an entire season of Curb Your Enthusiasm, and I still hadn’t made it to the front of the line,” he said.These two say their stories are, unfortunately, all too common. “You have to go to war for your voice, and it shouldn’t be that way,” she said.Georgia’s policy requiring voter registrations to exactly match database information has led to mass voting registration purges. This years-long problem added to by the new voting machines in 2020.The Coalition for Good Governance, a nonprofit that analyzes elections, warned the state that a new system in 2020 was “reckless” and could disproportionately impact minority voters.“In the state of Georgia, we have a problem with amplified voices. We have a problem with systematic racism. We have a problem with voter oppression. Please do not close your eyes and think, "not your state, not your problem,'” said Combs. “If we turn a blind eye here, your state could be next.”Since 2012, more than one million voters have been purged from Georgia’s registration database for being inactive or having imperfectly matched information.There is now a Fulton County Elections task force working to examine this past primary election and make adjustments for the upcoming primary and presidential elections. LOS ANGELES (AP) — Authorities identified five additional victims Tuesday as divers searched for the last missing passenger who died in a fatal boat fire off the coast of California.As the families mourned, officials pursued a criminal investigation into the blaze that killed 34 people on Labor Day.Santa Barbara County Sheriff Bill Brown said the victims, 21 women and 13 men from 16 to 62 years old, appear to have died from smoke inhalation before they were burned. Five of six crew members, including the captain, survived after multiple efforts to rescue the dozens trapped below deck.Authorities said efforts to find the final victim and salvage the Conception are expected to continue Wednesday.The five additional victims, all from California, are Adrian Dahood-Fritz, 40, of Sacramento; Lisa Fiedler, 52, of Mill Valley; Kristina "Kristy" Finstad, 41, of Tamrick Pines; Fernisa Sison, 57, of Stockton, and Kristian Takvam, 34, of San Francisco.Finstad, a marine biologist who led the scuba tour, had led hundreds of dives in the Channel Islands. She had just returned from spending several years sailing across the Pacific with her husband.Fiedler, a Michigan native, was a hairdresser and photographer who thought of herself as "part fish" because of her ocean addiction.The other three victims identified Tuesday were on the boat with coworkers and loved ones.Sison's husband, Michael Quitasol, and her three stepdaughters also perished in the fire. Sison and Quitasol worked at St. Joseph's Medical Center in Stockton.Dahood-Fritz and her husband, professional photographer Andrew Fritz, also both died in the blaze.
