San Diego Democratic delegate Jess Durfee has attended the last four of his party's conventions to select the presidential nominee.Some days, he spends more than 15 hours attending meetings, luncheons and waiting for major speeches on the floor."There is nothing like attending a convention," he says.There is also nothing like the Democratic National Convention for 2020, which begins Monday. It's going all virtual in the midst of the Coronavirus outbreak. It starts with a keynote speech from Sen. Bernie Sanders, and will conclude Thursday when Joe Biden officially accepts the presidential nomination. Durfee used to attend with his San Diego counterparts. This year he was supposed to go to the convention in Milwaukee. Instead, he'll be joining from his home office in University Heights. "We would normally be seeing one another, even having breakfast together... We'd grab a couple of tables, and say 'these are San Diego tables, get away,'" he said, jokingly.The same virtual format will apply for the Republican National Convention, happening next week. Thad Kousser, a political scientist at UC San Diego, says these conventions are essentially one long political ad. The business of the party is not the priority - it's getting voters excited for November."The big question here is whether America will want to watch something that looks like the Zoom meetings many of us have been in all day," he said. But Kousser said there is intense political interest that could push up viewership. In 2016, 26 million people tuned in for the opening night of the Democratic National Convention.Durfee said if there is a drop off in viewership for the Democrats, he expects the same issue next week when the Republicans hold their convention. 1752

A new study by GasBuddy claims the Golden State also has some of the most aggressive drivers.According to the study, California ranks number one for most aggressive drivers followed by Connecticut and Georgia.The study claims those aggressive habits are also costing Californians cold hard cash. SAN DIEGO COUNTY (KGTV)-- New SANDAG and San Diego County statistics show an alarming number of San Diegans of color are impacted by the coronavirus pandemic. Wednesday, community leaders and elected officials announced the creation of a new regional task force to tackle the root causes of the inequities.The coronavirus did not create society's inequities."But it has definitely exasperated them, and it has highlighted them," San Diego County Supervisor Nathan Fletcher said.That is why community leaders announced the creation of the new Regional COVID-19 Task Force for Equitable Recovery. They will work with elected officials to tackle the underlying problems that lead to inequities such as job, food, healthcare, and economic losses, felt by many San Diegans of color."You are valued," National City mayor, Alejandra Sotelo Solis, said in the Zoom announcement. "You have made a contribution to our community, and we want you to stay healthy.""The elected officials will then shoulder the obligation to take their recommendations and suggestions and translate them into policies that can be introduced for a vote to make the change real," Fletcher added.A newly released SANDAG report found that when compared to the white population, Black and Hispanic people are more than four times more likely to live in areas that have been impacted both by COVID-19 and unemployment.New San Diego County numbers show that while Hispanics and Latinos make up 34% of the county population, they account for 67% of the county's positive coronavirus cases."Not one community needs the testing, tracing, and treatment," JoAnn Fields with API initiative said. "But it needs to be on an equal level so that we are all protected as a whole community."The task force hopes to close the understanding, trust, access, and resource gap felt by people of color, in a proactive way. SAN DIEGO (KGTV)- San Diego County barely avoided falling back into the purple tier of the state’s reopening system, staying in the red for now.The color-coded tier system has been difficult for many business owners to deal with as they wonder if they will face more restrictions in the coming weeks.“We are working with the state to share our concerns and thoughts about the metrics they are using to put our county in the different tiers,” said Greg Cox, San Diego County Supervisor. "The reality is we remain at risk of being moved to the more restrictive tier in the future if we don’t do those things that we know we need to do.”Dr. Wilma Wooten, the county’s public health officer, said she and other health officers across the state have been pushing for the state to improve its metrics system to go beyond case rate and positivity rate.She would like to see three things happen.“If counties are maintaining hospitalizations and hospital capacities to somehow get credit for that, and also get credit for contact tracing,” she said.Wooten said the county should also get credit for providing access to COVID-19 testing in vulnerable communities hit the hardest.“San Diego has done an excellent job to date of getting access to testing in those communities that are hit the hardest,” she said.On Tuesday, the County Board of Supervisors passed a motion in a 4 to 1 vote to send a letter to the state backing Wooten’s effort in revising the reopening criteria.Wooten is urging members of the public to continue wearing a facial covering, washing hands, avoiding large gatherings, and staying home when sick, especially as flu season is on the way.“We do not have a vaccine for COVID-19, but we have a vaccine for the flu,” she said. “Getting the flu vaccine is the most important step in preventing the flu.” 1822
