ALMATY, Nov. 4 (Xinhua) -- Kazakhstan's Center for Prevention and Control of AIDS said Friday that the country had 17,266 registered HIV carriers as of Oct. 1,compared with 15,908 as of Feb. 1, 2010.Of the HIV-positive people, 1,432 were diagnosed with AIDS while 1,110 people carrying the virus AIDS have died, the center said.Last year, it said, a total of 1,969 new HIV cases were reported in the country.

As any dieter knows, it's hard to keep weight off. Weight regain is a familiar problem for dieters. The research appears in Thursday's issue of the New England Journal of Medicine. To study what drives it, Proietto and his colleagues enrolled 50 overweight or obese patients in Australia in a 10-week diet program. On average, the participants lost almost 30 pounds in the 10 weeks - faster than the standard advice of losing a pound or two per week. Even so, they gained an average of 12 pounds back over the next year. The scientists checked the blood levels of nine hormones known to influence appetite - and found that even a year after the end of the weight-loss program, six of the hormones were still out of whack. People who regain weight should not be harsh on themselves, as eating is our most basic instinct, study author Joseph Proietto of the University of Melbourne in Australia said. It's better not to gain weight than to try to lose it.

BEIJING, Nov. 1 (Xinhua) -- The ministers of Brazil, South Africa, India and China (BASIC) in a Tuesday joint statement urged developed nations to fulfill their commitments and provide funds and technology to help developing nations tackle climate change.Developed nations should honor their commitments, made at the Copenhagen climate change conference in 2009, to provide 100 billion U.S. dollars annually by 2020 and ensure that there will be no funding gaps from 2013 to 2020, according to the statement.Developed nations should also fulfill their pledge to offer 30 billion U.S. dollars in "fast-start funding" to developing nations in order to help them address climate change, the statement said.The ministers agreed that the coming Durban climate change conference should achieve a "comprehensive, fair and balanced outcome" under the principle of common but differentiated responsibility.They called on the conference to clearly establish the second commitment period under the Kyoto Protocol, during which developed country parties to the Kyoto Protocol should undertake quantified emission reduction commitments.The Kyoto Protocol is the cornerstone of climate change and its second commitment period is an essential priority for the success of the Durban conference, according to the statement.H The joint statement was issued following a two-day meeting of ministers from the four nations, also known as the ninth BASIC Ministerial Meeting on Climate Change, a mechanism through which the four countries and other developing countries coordinate their efforts in climate change.Representatives of Group 77 countries, island countries and the Arab League also attended the meeting.The Durban conference is scheduled for November. The earning per share, excluding certain items, is 9.72 dollars, topping the average estimate of 8.74 dollars per share polled by Thomson Reuters."We had a great quarter," said Google co-founder and Chief Executive Officer Larry Page in a statement. "Google+ is now open to everyone and we just passed the 40 million user mark. People are flocking into Google+ at an incredible rate and we are just getting started."Many analysts took the third quarter to examine the company's progress towards expanding its core business beyond advertising which accounted for 96 percent of its revenue last year. In the past quarter, Google made major investments in several key businesses, such as social networking and mobile.In August, Google announced a 12.5-billion-dollar acquisition of Motorola Mobility, a move widely seen to get Motorola's patent portfolio to protect its Android software against a growing number of infringement lawsuits by rival mobile platforms.
