SAN DIEGO (CNS) - The San Diego Humane Society will make a group of animals displaced by the Camp Fire available for adoption Friday.Earlier this month, the organization's Emergency Response Team deployed to Butte County for 10 days to offer aid to hundreds of animals displaced or otherwise affected by the fire.The team returned to San Diego Dec. 19 with eight dogs and three cats, some of whom received treatment for burns caused by the fire.The owners of the 11 animals surrendered them to the Humane Society because they could no longer care for them. As a result, they will not have an owner seeking to find them once conditions improve in the areas affected by the fire.The Humane Society will put a group of the displaced animals up for adoption at 10 a.m. at its main campus, located at 5500 Gaines St. Available animals include a bonded pair of 6-year old miniature pinscher mixes named Pikachu and Panchie and a 3-year old cat names Sunshine.One of the dogs, 11-year-old Cinnamon, was adopted on Friday. SAN DIEGO (CNS) - San Diego County Treasurer-Tax Collector Dan McAllister reminded local property owners today to pay property taxes on time or face a hefty penalty. The first installment of the 2018-2019 secured property tax bill was due on Nov. 1 and will become delinquent after Dec. 10. ``So far, we have had 41 percent of taxpayers send us .3 billion in first installment payments,'' McAllister said. ``But we're coming up on the deadline, and we don't want anyone to have to pay a 10 percent penalty for being even a minute late.'' Online payments will be accepted until midnight on Dec. 10. Taxpayers should log on to sdtcc.com early and give themselves plenty of time to complete an e-check payment before the automatic midnight cutoff, according to McAllister. Payments can also be made by phone at (855) 829-3773; in person by visiting any of the five branch offices; or by mail, in which case payments must be postmarked Dec. 10 to be considered on time. The Treasurer-Tax Collector's office expects to collect .49 billion in property taxes from the nearly one million bills it sent to county residents in September. According to the county, San Diego Gas & Electric owes the most money in property taxes -- 8 million. During fiscal year 2017-18, the county used 45.6 percent of the nearly billion collected to fund local schools and 13.2 percent on county services. Property tax funds also help pay for libraries and resources offered by city and county governments. SAN DIEGO (CNS) - The San Diego Police Department conducted a bicycle and pedestrian safety enforcement operation Monday from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Officers focused on enforcing safety laws involving motorists, bicyclists and pedestrians in the Northern Division, which includes Clairemont, Mission Beach, Pacific Beach, La Jolla and University City. They looked for drivers who were speeding, making illegal turns, failing to stop for signs and signals, failing to yield to pedestrians in crosswalks, or any other violations. They also searched for pedestrians who crossed the street illegally or failed to yield to drivers who have the right of way. Pedestrians should cross the street only in marked crosswalks or at intersections. Police have investigated several collisions involving bicyclists and pedestrians during the past three years. In 2013, California had 701 pedestrian deaths, accounting for more than 23 percent of all roadway fatalities. The national average is 15 percent. Police say drivers should follow these safety tips:- Look out for bicyclists, pedestrians and scooter riders, especially at night or in bad weather.- Slow down and be prepared to stop when turning or entering a crosswalk.- Stop at the crosswalk stop line to give drivers in other lanes an opportunity to see, and yield to pedestrians.- Be cautious when backing up.- Share the road with bicyclists.- California law requires at least three feet of clearance when passing a bike rider.- Look for cyclists before opening a car door or pulling out from a parking space.- Yield to cyclists at intersections and as directed by signs and signals.- Watch out for bike riders when making turns.Tips for pedestrians:- Cross at crosswalks or intersections, and obey signs and signals.- Walk facing traffic.- Don't text or talk on a cell phone while walking.- Make eye contact with drivers as they approach.- Wear bright clothing during the day and reflective materials, or use a flashlight, at night.- Look left-right-left before crossing a street.Tips for scooter riders:- Wear properly fitted helmets.- Riders are considered vehicle operators; they are required to obey the same rules of the road as other vehicle operators, including obeying traffic signs, signals, and lane markings.- When riding a scooter in the street, cyclists must ride in the same direction as traffic.- When riding at night, scooter riders are required to have a front light and a red reflector to the rear- No passengers are allowed on any scooter. SAN DIEGO (CNS) - The California Highway Patrol is reporting no fatalities and 26 drunk driving arrests in San Diego County for the Labor Day weekend period of 6 p.m. Friday to 6 a.m. Sunday.Last year for the same period, there were 40 DUI arrests and no fatalities in the county, according to the CHP.Across California, the CHP reported 551 DUI arrests and 18 fatalities for the same period. Last year, they reported 717 DUI arrests and 11 fatalities.The DUI arrests are only those made by CHP officers, while fatality statistics are for all law enforcement agencies.Statewide, 13 vehicle occupants were killed in CHP jurisdiction, six without safety belts. There were four motorcyclists killed in CHP jurisdiction, one without a helmet.The CHP investigates all crashes on freeways, and on all roads in unincorporated areas. 833

SAN DIEGO (CNS) - The Department of Defense announced 0 million in awards Thursday for 5G experimentation and testing at five U.S. military test sites, including Naval Base San Diego.The DOD says the projects represent the largest full-scale 5G tests for dual-use applications in the world, with officials from the military, technology industry and academic experts collaborating to advance DOD's 5G capabilities.The San Diego portion of the testing involves a project to develop a 5G-enabled smart warehouse that improves materiel and supply handling, management, storage and distribution for the Navy's Fleet Logistics Center in San Diego and creates a proving ground for testing, refining and validating emerging 5G enabled technologies.A Naval Base Coronado warehouse operated by the Naval Supply Systems Command Fleet Logistics Center will be used to prototype a smart warehouse use case and perform at-scale experimentation.AT&T, GE Research, Vectrus Mission Solutions Corp. and Deloitte Consulting LLP will take part in designing and building the 5G test bed, network enhancements and warehouse specific applications, according to the DOD.Naval Information Warfare Center Pacific will lead the technical assessment and support the implementation and execution of the experiments, performing tests and evaluation, and ensuring the deployed 5G technology and smart warehouse applications meet the expectations of the Navy and the Office of the Under Secretary of Defense for Research and Engineering.Michael Kratsios, Acting Under Secretary of Defense for Research and Engineering, said, "The Department of Defense is at the forefront of cutting- edge 5G testing and experimentation, which will strengthen our nation's warfighting capabilities as well as U.S. economic competitiveness in this critical field."Through these test sites, the department is leveraging its unique authorities to pursue bold innovation at a scale and scope unmatched anywhere else in the world.
