SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - As San Diego’s Pride celebration approaches, a new homeless shelter has opened specifically focusing on members of the LGBTQ community.It’s operated by the Interfaith Shelter Network, which just opened a new branch in Hillcrest after receiving grants from the Pride Foundation and the Cushman Foundation.Abigail Shrestha, the manager of the rotational shelter programs at Interfaith, said they opened the new shelter because they recognized the need.“It’s a population that has quite a bit of discrimination and other issues, so it’s beneficial to have something that supports the community,” said Shrestha.The operation is based out of Hillcrest, but the shelter location will rotate between churches in Interfaith’s network. As of Monday, one week after they opened, they had six clients, though it can hold up to 12 people. Shrestha said she expects it to be full by the end of the week.Interfaith operates shelters around the county which are all LGBTQ friendly, but this is the first one that is targeted for that community. Mainly, said Shrestha, because of the unique circumstances of their housing instability.“Many of the clients, especially the youth, are forced out of their homes. Some families will not recognize positively their choices, and they are kicked out,” she said.Their main goal is to get the residents into permanent housing. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — As cities nationwide remove landmarks named after Confederate or racially-charged figures, an online petition is demanding San Diego do the same at Mount Hope Cemetery.A Change.org petition is asking Mayor Kevin Faulconer to remove a memorial to Confederate soldiers at Mount Hope Cemetery."Why does the City of San Diego expect black citizens, literal descendants of the very people the monument celebrates enslaving, oppressing, and terrorizing, to maintain such a horrific monument?" the petition says.The petition has nearly 900 or 1,000 requested signatures.The monument was erected in 1948 on a plot owned by the United Daughters of the Confederacy, who supporters call such markers, testaments to history.Both Union and Confederate soldiers are buried in the cemetery.10news found the monument stone heavily damaged, with pieces scattered around the monument. Sources tell us the vandalism is a recent and ongoing issue.The monument isn't the only one in San Diego that has been subject to Change.org efforts. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) – Dance is a way to lose yourself and escape. For students taking the Ballet for Me! Class at the San Diego Civic Youth Ballet School in Balboa Park, dance is their escape.“I just love it cause it like brings me joy and it can take me to my happy place,” said Renata Scorza-Muniz.Renata has been taking regular ballet classes since she was 2 years old. But in February, her life changed.“It’s stressful, I guess, to be in the hospital,” said Renata.Renata was diagnosed with cancer, causing her to lose her vision and forcing her out of her regular ballet class.That’s when she turned to a class called Ballet for Me.“It’s just so fun to do,” said Renata.Ballet for Me is a tuition-waved class that is designed for kids with unique physical needs. Each student in the class gets paired up with a mentor to help guide them through each movement.“It just makes me so happy when I get to see students feel happy and free in class,” said Kerri DeNies instructor and creator of the class.This dance class helps the kids feel whole again. And all year they rehearse for their moment to shine and perform in front of a packed audience where they feel a little more joy and beam with confidence. 1213
