A car plowed into bicyclists and pedestrians on a street in New Orleans, killing two people and injuring six others as the city celebrates Mardi Gras festivities.A majority of the people struck Saturday night were on bicycles, but it's unclear how many, Police Chief Shaun Ferguson said. Of the people injured, three are in critical condition.The driver, Tashonty Toney, 32, was arrested and faces several charges, including two counts of vehicular homicide, hit and run, and reckless operation, the New Orleans Police Department tweeted.Toney was not injured, and had originally fled the scene, Ferguson said"We were able to apprehend the subject so quickly because citizens stopped this individual, because they thought they were helping someone who had just been involved in a one-car accident," Ferguson said.Officers determined that the accident scene spanned several blocks of Esplanade Avenue. Earlier, police had said they are investigating whether the driver was intoxicated, and standard protocol involves breathalyzer and blood tests.Police did not provide details on the people killed or injured. The Orleans Parish Coroner's Office will release the victims' identities after autopsies are completed and family members notified.While no motive is currently known, the incident does not appear connected to the Endymion parade, a Mardi Gras-related activity that was happening nearby, Ferguson said.The crash comes about two years after a drunken driver rammed into a crowd taking part in the Endymion parade, injuring at least 28 people. The driver in that 2017 crash, Neilson Rizzuto, was charged with vehicular negligence resulting in injury, and reckless operation and hit-and-run driving.The Endymion parade is one of the most popular events leading up to Mardi Gras, which is Tuesday. Mardi Gras is a day of revelry that includes parades, parties and food before the Christian fasting season of Lent begins on Ash Wednesday. It marks the last day of the Carnival season. 2001

“I have never in 23 years ran across this!”That's how assistant Bristow, Oklahoma police chief Kendra Raney described what happened in the ladies restroom of Walmart on Tuesday. "A Walmart employee requesting an ambulance for a lady that was inside the women's bathroom either having a miscarriage, or having a baby," Raney said. That 911 call triggered emergency responses from multiple agencies, including police, fire and the Creek County Ambulance service. It sent paramedics racing to help.Raney described what first responders found, stating, "I understand the Walmart employees performed lifesaving measures and when the ambulance got there, they transported them both to a Tulsa Hospital."The Bristow Fire Department report shows it paramedics worked on the baby girl for 17 minutes. They gave her oxygen and cleared her airways. Finally, she took breaths on her own and made a weak cry.Why was the baby was born in the Walmart restroom? "Mom stated that she started having contractions about 2:30 in the morning that morning and she didn't think that they warranted a visit to the hospital," Raney explains. "She got up later, got her kids off to school and felt that she needed to use the restroom, so she stopped at the Walmart which the middle school's right across from the Walmart."Raney says the mother felt some pressure and then the baby came out. We asked how the mother and baby girl are doing now. Then she added, "Both are gonna make it."Raney said, the incident is still under investigation. Bristow police are not releasing the mother's name, or which hospital the mother and baby were taken to in Tulsa. WASHINGTON, D.C. – When it comes to gun control in America, no state is confronting the issue harder right now than Virginia. For the first time in more than two decades, Virginia elected and just swore in a new state legislature controlled by Democrats. “Virginia is officially blue, congratulations,” said Gov. Ralph Northam, D-Virginia, on election night 2019. The new Democrat-controlled state legislature is vowing to pass gun control measures. That’s prompting some local governments to make their own moves by declaring themselves “Second Amendment Sanctuary” cities and counties. So far, more than 100 cities and counties in Virginia have declared themselves “Second Amendment Sanctuaries.” They’re not the only ones: from Florida to Colorado to Nevada and elsewhere, local municipalities are voting in favor of designating themselves “Second Amendment Sanctuaries.”But what does it even mean? Georgetown Law professor Mary McCord says what each declaration says varies from place to place. “Some are very much directly stating that county officials or city officials will not enforce state law that implicates or regulates, in any way, shape or form, gun ownership,” McCord said. “Others are simply espousing a support for second amendment rights.” In the end, though, she said the declarations do not hold up to legal scrutiny. “They really have no legal effect,” McCord said. “In Virginia, for example -- the Virginia Constitution and Virginia state law is very clear that it is the general assembly of the entire state -- not of any particular locality. The General Assembly makes the general laws and that those laws are supreme -- and any local ordinances resolutions, etc., that are inconsistent with those laws are void and have no effect.”Virginia’s attorney general has concluded the same thing and added that any gun control measures passed by the state legislature will be enforced. 1916

The City of Tulsa has created a committee to oversee the search for mass graves of those killed in the 1921 Tulsa Race Massacre.It's giving Tulsa new hope for healing.“If we can identify a place where there are bodies, we have a responsibility to look into that,” mayor G.T. A search of three possible mass grave sites were identified in a 2001 state report:Oaklawn Cemetery, Newblock Park and Rolling Oaks Memorial Gardens, formerly Booker T. Another interesting note about the investigation, there was a Spanish influenza outbreak in Tulsa in 1919, just two years before the race massacre.
