Two transients were arrested and charged in the murder. Prosecutors say Gawitt was stabbed 50 times and tortured. Still, she managed to call 911 herself and alert police about her assailants. “I’ve been a police officer in Carlsbad for over 28 years, and to my knowledge this is the firs time in that particular community a crime like that has happened,” said Carlsbad police Chief Neil Gallucci. For two hours, Gallucci and other top police officials fielded questions from residents about the murder and the lingering safety concerns it has brought about.Christenson said he came to ask the chief one question. “I asked him if there were any changes to outreach or enforcement in response to this issue and he said no,” said Christenson. “That was disappointing.” But Gallucci said the meeting itself was necessary to get a feel for the issues. “I think having this meeting was a big step forward,” he said. (KGTV) - A new law, passed unanimously by the Carlsbad City Council, will allow any place with a license to serve food and alcohol to also host live entertainment.Previously, only places that served primarily food were allowed to have live music or shows."What we’re looking at is more of the solo artist, the pianist, more of the acoustic music that we’re seeing a trend in the rise all over," says City Village Manager Claudia Huerta.The city hadn't updated its live entertainment rules since 2017. Huerta says business owners had requested the change to keep pace with other similar coastal cities. Now, they can apply for a permit to have live entertainment, including music, DJs or other performers like hypnotists and comedians."The village is a special place," says Zac Markham, who owns Humble Olive Oils on State Street. "I really think this will raise bar of the village and make it a place to be for Carlsbad and all of our county."Not everyone is excited about the change. Some neighbors worry that more music will lead to more people and more problems, especially late at night."The whole purpose of that is to get more business, right? I understand, that’s a valid business reason," says Carlsbad Barrio resident Simon Angel. "But is it appropriate for the communities that are going to be impacted by it? We already have people walking through at night. Sometimes they stop and relieve themselves or they get sick in people's front yards."Huerta says the city is working to make sure that doesn't happen. Every application for an entertainment permit will be reviewed by the police. Although the number of reported new illnesses has decreased during the last week, the investigation is ongoing."Canada has reported 172 cases of gastrointestinal illness linked to consumption of raw oysters."Avoid eating raw and undercooked shellfish, including oysters, to reduce your risk of illness," said Dr. Karen Smith, a public health officer in California."If you do eat shellfish, cook it until it reaches an internal temperature of at least 145°F. Quick steaming isn't sufficient to kill norovirus."Norovirus is spread through the ingestion of infectious virions, which grow in the small intestine before being expelled in feces. Infection usually occurs when someone eats food or drinks liquids that have been contaminated, touches surfaces or objects that are contaminated and then puts their hands in their mouth, or has contact with someone who has been infected, such as by sharing food.Norovirus causes inflammation of the stomach, the intestines or both.
