HAIKOU, Oct. 7 (Xinhua) -- More than 130,000 people were evacuated after more than 550 villages were submerged by floods by Wednesday afternoon in southern China's island province of Hainan, local authorities said late Wednesday. The torrential rains are the heaviest in Hainan since 1961, a spokesman for the provincial government said.Water levels at five reservoirs are now in danger of crossing their limits because of heavy rains across the island. Rescuers are working to reinforce them, the official added. The floods have damaged two highways, two national routes, eight provincial routes along with several other roads. So far, no casualties have been reported among tourists, the official said.Torrential rains have battered many areas of Hainan for six days. Several cities, including the provincial capital of Haikou and the beach resort of Sanya, have also suffered flooding. The four cities of Qionghai, Wanning, Ding'an and Haikou were most seriously hit. Parts of the island received an average 324.7 mm of rainfall.Hainan Island is a famous tropical tourist resort and attracts millions of visitors every year. However, tourist numbers were reported to be down by nearly 50 percent Wednesday, the sixth day of the one-week holiday celebrating National Day on Oct. 1.The rains are expected to weaken but continue until the end of the seven-day holiday, an official at the provincial meteorological observatory said Wednesday.

SHANGHAI, Oct. 2 (Xinhua) - China and Cambodia pledged to further cooperation and bilateral ties as top Chinese legislator Wu Bangguo met with Cambodian King Norodom Sihamoni in Shanghai Saturday."China attaches importance to relations with Cambodia and hopes to deepen and advance the mutually beneficial cooperation to lift bilateral ties," Wu told Sihamoni.Wu, chairman of China's National People's Congress (NPC) Standing Committee, said China cherished the special friendship with the Cambodian Royal Family. The friendship nurtured by Chinese leaders and former Cambodian King Norodom Sihanouk had weathered the changing international landscape, said Wu.Bilateral relations had seen frequent high-level visits, increased political mutual trust, and mutually beneficial trade cooperation and support on international and regional issues, said Wu.Wu also thanked the king for his support to the Shanghai World Expo and presence at the celebrations of China's National Pavilion Day at the Shanghai World Expo Friday.Sihamoni said the progress in bilateral relations was in the line with the two peoples' aspirations and the Cambodian Royal Family was committed to boosting bilateral cooperation.

BEIJING, Oct. 16 (Xinhua) - China's gross domestic product (GDP) will grow about 9 percent next year, but the economy will be challenged by rising labor costs, liquidity problems and difficulty in sustaining rapid growth in the long run, a senior researcher at the country's top think-tank said Saturday.Liu Shijin, deputy director of the Development Research Center of the State Council, or China's Cabinet, spoke at the OTO Fortune Forum held by the Bank of Communications. As for the year 2010, Liu predicted an annual 10-percent GDP growth due to the economic slowdown in China during the second half of the year.He said China's exports and investments would be much better in 2011 than this year, but the growth rate of consumption would pull back slightly from this year's boom, making 9 percent growth "very likely".To keep its economy on track for sustained growth, however, China still faces three major challenges in the long term, according to Liu's research."The first challenge comes from the rapid rise of labor costs in the country," Liu said, warning: "The competitiveness of Chinese companies will be threatened by rising labor costs unless they find a new source of growth, such as innovation."The second challenge is from liquidity as China's currency, the renminbi, and other non-U.S. dollar currencies are under forced appreciation pressure following the Federal Reserve's considering a new round of quantitative easing of the monetary policy, he said. The greenback, which serves as the world's reserve currency, tumbled against most major currencies this week on expected easing move by the Federal Reserve to pump more money into the U.S. economy next month.Meanwhile, China's economic stimulus package also injected excessive liquidity into the market, pushing up prices of commodities, equities and other land-related assets or resources, he added. The third major challenge concerns whether China can maintain its quick economic expansion in the future, he said.According to Liu's forecast, in the next three to five years China's GDP growth will slow to a moderate speed of around 7 percent from its current 10 percent."Actually, we don't have to be too worried about an economy with moderate expansion," he said, "because the current economic growth is too high for China."

BEIJING, Sept. 12 (Xinhua) -- Chinese State Councilor Dai Bingguo told Japan early Sunday morning to make a "wise political resolution" and immediately release the Chinese fishermen and fishing boat its coast guard seized earlier this week.Dai made the remarks when he summoned the Japanese Ambassador to China Uichiro Niwa in the wee hours. He was the highest-ranking Chinese official to make a response after the fishing boat and its crew were seized Tuesday in waters off the Diaoyu Islands and its captain was detained on Friday."Dai expressed solemnly (to the Japanese ambassador) the Chinese government's grave concerns and its serious and just position," said the Foreign Ministry in a statement.Dai warned Japan not to make a wrong judgement on the situation and urged it to make a "wise political resolution" and immediately release the fishermen and return the boat. The Japanese ambassador expressed that he would promptly report the Chinese position to his government, according to the statement.China decided Friday night to postpone a negotiation with Japan on the East China Sea issue, which had been scheduled for mid September, after a Japanese court ruled a 10-day detention through Sept.19 against the captain despite protests from China.Previously, Foreign Minister Yang Jiechi on Friday summoned the Japanese ambassador and demanded Japan immediately and unconditionally release the boat and all the crew, saying China's determination to defend its sovereignty over the Diaoyu Islands and the interests of the Chinese people was unswerving.Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Jiang Yu said Friday night when announcing the postponement of the talks that the Japanese side has "ignored China's repeated solemn representations and firm opposition, and obstinately decided to put the Chinese captain under the so-called judiciary procedures."She said Japan's acts have violated the law of nations and basic international common sense, and are "ridiculous, illegal and invalid.""Japan will reap as it has sown, if it continues to act recklessly," Jiang warned. On Tuesday, two Japanese Coast Guard patrol ships and the Chinese fishing boat collided in waters off the Diaoyu Islands in the East China Sea. No injuries were reported, but the fishing boat was then intercepted by the Japanese patrol.
