With a rising number of positive COVID-19 cases in Northeast Ohio and local government-imposed requirements to wear them in public places, it is safe to say that masks are here to stay for the foreseeable future. To help alleviate one particular annoyance of wearing masks, a North Ridgeville company is seeking a patent on its mask design that prevents the mask wearer's glasses from fogging.Larry Nolan, the owner of Versa-Flex Inc., filed paperwork with the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office shortly after the COVID-19 pandemic began, seeking a design patent for his anti-fog mask. Nolan, who has spent the better part of his adult life inventing and designing high-quality bags and carrying cases for the camera and film equipment, initially didn't want to make masks. However, he began to seriously consider the venture when a friend of his presented him with a problem."She said the biggest problem they have is their glasses fogging up," Nolan said. "It took me a minute and a half, seriously, a minute and a half and I said, 'that's not a problem. Seriously, that's not a problem.'" After coming up with the design for the three-part mask, which features a gasket-like top layer that extends over the nose and upper cheekbone, Nolan began sewing."You have a cotton-polyester layer. [There is] a filter in the center. And I have a cool mesh on the inside that helps make your breathing easier," Nolan said. Nolan is also working on a design that could incorporate an N-95 or P-95 mask.Versa-Flex is selling its three-layer masks on its website and through Etsy. The masks also come with a variety of different decals, including the United States Marine Corps, the Rocky River Pirates, Lakewood Rangers, and the North Ridgeville Rangers. The company also sells mask designs to look like the Cleveland Browns logo.The masks are made by hand and can be purchased from to .75."I have a hard time saying no. People say you have to say no or you're not going to make any money," Nolan said. "That's the problem, I don't know how to say no and I don't make any money." Nolan's first breakthrough product came in the early 1990s. It was a five-in-one reflector used by photographers and videographers. However, Nolan said the product's intellectual property was quickly stolen and taken to China where it could be mass-produced. The saga taught him a valuable lesson, he said."It's been a tough road," Nolan said. "Things just keep on changing. There is no such thing as a steady flow. Everything is a change. You have to adapt."Adapt, he did. Versa-Flex, which is a combination of the words versatile and flexible, has been a mantra of sorts for the company. Nolan has secured multiple contracts with the NFL, NFL Films, and HBO's Hard Knocks for different bags used to carry or conceal audio equipment needed for a television production."I don't see the numbers in my head. I don't. I see designs. I see ideas," Nolan said. "I don't sleep at night because all I do is think."Nolan, a disabled veteran, said his knack for inventing and tinkering came from his biological father, whom he shares a patent with for a blow-up toilet seat cushion. Nolan jokes about the absurdity of the product now. After high school, Nolan enlisted in the Navy, where he continued to invent."You see all this stuff that's on this aircraft carrier. They had to start from scratch. Everything on this carrier is an invention. Everything," Nolan said. "Everything you see in this space, somebody had to create it, design it, draw it, and get it off the ground. If it didn't work, they had to try the second time. It's perseverance. You can't give up you can't surrender."All of Nolan's products are made in the United States, using as many domestically made products as he can. His most recent purchase, a massive embroidery machine, was manufactured by a company in Solon. By having high standards for quality, Nolan said many of his products have lasted longer than the companies that purchased them."It takes just as much labor to make a crap product as it does to make a good one. Anthony.The toy company said that it wanted to honor Anthony for her "pioneering efforts and far-reaching impact" in the fight for women having the right to vote."On November 5, 1872, while protesting and leading the charge for women's voting rights, Susan B. Anthony made a defiant move," Mattel said on its website. "She voted in the presidential election and was arrested at her home in Rochester, NY."Because Anthony helped pave the way, the 19th Amendment was passed in 1920, which gave women everywhere the right to vote.Last week, the National Susan B. Anthony Museum and House unveiled the doll inside Anthony's home.In a press release, Deborah L. Hughes, President & CEO of the Anthony Museum, said they were delighted to hear from Mattel's design team about constructing a doll that would reflect "Susan B. Anthony's life and work."The doll's launch in 2020 makes it extra unique since it marks the 100th anniversary of the 19th Amendment passing, Anthony's 200th birthday, and the museum's 75th anniversary.The doll comes dressed in a floor-length black and lace dress, accented with glasses, and a lace collar fastened with a cameo brooch.The doll is available for a limited time only and sells for .99 on Mattel's website. 1378

When snow falls in a flurry and the weather is cold outside, escaping the elements becomes a top priority.With COVID-19 causing some warming shelters to stop operations this winter, however, the impacts could literally mean the difference between life and death.“We’re going to see a lot of people die to be perfectly honest,” said Robin Wood-Mason with The Delores Project, a homeless shelter in Denver, Colorado, that focuses on women and transgender folks.He says during a normal winter, this shelter can provide a warming space for dozens of people each day. But with a static population and a lack of social distancing, local health guidelines have forced them to shut their doors for warming shelters this season.“It’s heartbreaking,” Wood-Mason said of the warming shelter not being able to open this winter. “Here in Denver, we’ve got thousands more people experiencing than there are shelter beds available.”Across the country, other warming shelters are also being impacted by COVID concerns.“We’re just starting to inch into those winter months when we know things are going to get colder, things are going to look and feel a little different into our regions,” said Andrea Carlson with the American Red Cross.She says the days of having people packed in to one large room to get warm are gone. Now, they’re putting people into multiple separate spaces and following new COVID safety protocols.“Distanced between each other, masks are required, you do have some health checks when you come into the warming center,” Carlson said.As winter weather rolls in, and limited capacity issues mean more people are staying outside, The Delores Project believes more people will be exposed to harsh weather and the virus.“It means that we’re really going to see people get sick,” Wood-Mason said. “It’s going to put a new burden on the hospital system and our first responders.” 1887

Many of us felt that we couldn’t do both.”Blue Star Families offers a solution, a way for society to help, through community by connecting families and military spouses with people who can help your every need."Military families lives are difficult without a pandemic, we do a big mission around the world and then you add the pandemic to it, the stress on the children, the family separation that’s been compounded, the unemployment has been compounded, it’s a tough time for military families. This relief makes such a difference,” Roth-Douquet said.Blue Star Families teamed up with USAA to survey military families every week for 10 weeks. They figured out where the problems were, and are. USAA then committed million to the Military Family Relief initiative, which will help two-dozen military and general aid non-profits, including Blue Star Families. It’s the largest one-time philanthropic contribution in USAA"s nearly 100-year history.“This million will help augment the reduction in fundraising and the increased need that’s happening with military families,” said Harriet Dominique, who manages philanthropic strategies and contributions for USAA.“We know that military families as they’re serving our nation taking care of us and our freedoms have challenge and stressors. Those challenges have been increased by financial impacts and career and employment impacts of COVID-19,” Dominique said.For Dominique, this is personal. Her dad and brother served and her nephew is a reservist. Some of the organizations that will benefit are the Navy-Marine Corps Relief Society, The Institute for Veterans and Military Families, and "Hiring Our Heroes.”“When we talk about military spouses who have lost their job because of COVID and we know their service member and they need financial stability and the investment in hiring our heroes for financial security, we know we’re making a difference,” Dominique said. 3408

  

With COVID-19 cases spiking across the country once again, Starbucks is bringing back a program that offers free coffee to health care professionals and other essential workers.For the entire month of December, Starbucks is offering a free tall coffee to "any customer who identifies as a front-line responder."
