SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - One person was killed in a chain-reaction crash on Interstate 805 in the South Bay that forced lane closures and led to a heavy traffic backup during the Wednesday morning commute.Shortly after 11:30 p.m. Tuesday, the California Highway Patrol reported a crash involving a Nissan pickup truck colliding with a Caltrans truck that was working along the side of northbound I-805 near Bonita Road.CHP officials determined that a Toyota Yaris struck the pickup, causing it to slam into the back of the Caltrans truck, which was hauling asphalt.CHECK TRAFFIC CONDITIONS10News learned the Nissan's driver died at the hospital after sustaining injuries from the wreck.Yaris' driver, a 29-year-old man, was arrested on suspicion of DUI and vehicular manslaughter.No other injuries were reported, and CHP officials said the crash is under investigation.The crash and clean-up led to the closure of at least two lanes on northbound I-805 at Bonita Road. If you're a Comic-Con mega fan, patience is a vital part of the experience. Many slept on the grassy courtyard for hours, just to claim a seat inside the coveted Hall H. Fans say they can't get enough. "I've been a fan since the first season came out," Superfan, Marvin Calderon said. "I'm also a fan of the comic books."Calderon showed us his right arm. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — On Monday, a planetary sight unseen for nearly 800 years will captivate stargazers as Jupiter and Saturn create a celestial event known as the "Christmas Star."The two bright planets will align to create an even brighter display, culminating on the night of Monday, Dec. 21, according to NASA. While the two planets pass each other regularly, this year's event is so rare because not only is the distance between the planets so close but it's also occurring at night."You can imagine the solar system to be a racetrack, with each of the planets as a runner in their own lane and the Earth toward the center of the stadium," said Henry Throop, astronomer in the Planetary Science Division at NASA Headquarters in Washington. "From our vantage point, we’ll be able to be to see Jupiter on the inside lane, approaching Saturn all month and finally overtaking it on December 21."The closest alignment will last for a few days and appear just a tenth of a degree apart. On Monday, Jupiter and Saturn will appear so close that a pinkie finger at arm’s length will easily cover both planets.The planets haven't passed this closely in 400 years, and it's been nearly 800 years since this "Great Conjunction" has occurred at night, NASA says."Conjunctions like this could happen on any day of the year, depending on where the planets are in their orbits," said Throop. "The date of the conjunction is determined by the positions of Jupiter, Saturn, and the Earth in their paths around the Sun, while the date of the solstice is determined by the tilt of Earth’s axis. The solstice is the longest night of the year, so this rare coincidence will give people a great chance to go outside and see the solar system."HOW TO SEE ITIn San Diego County, viewers can see the planets without needing a telescope by looking toward the southwest horizon just after sunset, NASA says, but a pair of binoculars or a small telescope will only enhance the view. The best way to see the phenomenon is by finding an unobstructed view of the sky from say a park or field. The sight should even be viewable from most cities, but the site will only be visible after sunset for about one to two hours.To tell the two planets apart prior to Monday when they switch positions in the sky, Jupiter will look like a bright star and be easily seen, while Saturn will look slightly fainter and slightly above and to the left of Jupiter.For photographers, NASA recommends using a long exposure time to take in enough light as it gets dark. Both cell phone camera and DSLR camera users are encouraged to use a tripod to reduce any shaking during a long exposure.Cell phone users may even want to use "night mode" or a wide-angle lens if available. DSLR users may consider setting their focus to manual and leaving their aperture wide open to let in as much light as possible.Jupiter and Saturn should be bright enough to allow photographers to capture the planets without needing to zoom, NASA says. Junior Achievement of San Diego County hosted the Helix High class of seniors at their Finance Park. "These are all seniors getting ready to go into the real world, this is a program getting them real-world ready," said Valerie Hash, Capstone Manager for Junior Achievement. In the four-hour crash course, students become adults for the day, complete with a salary, family, education, and debt. So then they understand all the decisions their family has to make in order to make their life awesome and possible," said Hash. When taking out loans and making other purchases, students see real-world San Diego costs. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - More than 100 migrants detained in Texas were flown to San Diego's Lindbergh Field Friday for processing due to a backlog in the Rio Grande Valley sector, U.S. Border Patrol officials said. “Currently, ICE aircraft are providing flights from RGV Sector to Del Rio and San Diego Sectors. We are also transporting individuals from Yuma Sector to El Centro Sector and from the Rio Grande Valley Sector to the Laredo Sector by bus. These are additional steps DHS is taking to mitigate the challenges posed by the unprecedented number of people in CBP custody,” said Theron Francisco, Acting Supervisory Border Patrol Agent. Once in San Diego, the migrants were transported from the airport to the Border Patrol’s Brown Field Station in the South Bay. According to acting San Diego Border Patrol Chief Doug Harrison, the migrants will go through general processing and screening, with the hopes of adhering to the national 20-day detention rule. The detention rule states migrant families cannot be held in detention for more than 20 days. After the initial screening at the border station, Immigration and Customs Enforcement will take over processing. Prior to the Texas-to-San Diego transfer, the selected migrants -- most of them being families -- went through health screenings to determine if they were healthy enough for travel. Harrison said there will be three flights per week, with the planes being ICE-contracted commercial charter flights. Harrison added the Rio Grande Valley facility is 200 percent over capacity, making the transfer of migrants to San Diego necessary. “We got to give the people in Rio Grande Valley some relief,” he said. In addition to San Diego, Harrison said it’s possible that migrants from Texas could be transferred to border stations in Detroit, Buffalo and Miami.
