CHICAGO, Ill. -- Karate is well-known for teaching discipline, but its focus on core strength, balance and confidence-building could be effective for something else – helping people living with brain disorders such as Parkinson’s. Twice a week, inside a karate dojo in Chicago, students learn the fundamental movements of Kihon technique. “We did something called KoGo Kumite which is partner work, working on rhythm, working on distancing, working on timing and working on technique.” But for Fonseca Martial Arts head instructor Brian Ramrup this is a class like none other he’s taught before. “These guys all have Parkinson's,” said Ramrup. More than 1 million Americans have Parkinson’s disease. The progressive neurological disorder affects balance and movement. Tremors and stiffness are common symptoms, but the disease can also lead to depression and anxiety. For Sonia Vargas, diagnosed with Parkinson’s in 2005, it started with tingling in her legs. “It felt like I was carrying some piece of some heavy equipment on my legs,” said Vargas. A year ago, on the recommendation of her neurologist, Vargas joined the Chicago-area martial arts academy.“These guys are learning how to go to the ground safely, how to break falls,” said Ramrup. It’s a skill that can help avoid injuries for patients who begin to lose balance and fall frequently. It’s part of a program studying the potential for karate to slow the progression of the disorder. “When I went to the first class, the next day, I felt a difference. It was so remarkable,” said Vargas. Dr. Jori Fleisher is the principal investigator of the study and a neurologist at Rush University Medical Center. She says initial results are promising. “We found clinically significant changes in quality of life which is huge,” said Fleisher. “It's a great exercise covering a lot of the areas: balance, core strength, big large amplitude movements when people are kind of tiny or smaller, stiffer. They're sort of fighting back actively against that.” Camaraderie is also a key component. The group now competes together, cheering for one another on good days and bad. “The exercises help tremendously the competitions. I mean really gets you going. I mean my first competition I got I got the orange belt,” said Vargas. The year-long randomized program concludes next month, and Dr. Fleisher remains cautiously optimistic about the outcome.“I don't think karate will be the end all be all. Police released new details late Tuesday afternoon about a dog owner who gunned down two people inside a Port St. Lucie home the day before.Investigators said Guy Alexander Hansman, 55, and his daughter, Harper Hansman, 11, were shot and killed by their neighbor, identified as Ronald Delserro, 82, at a home on Monday.According to police, the violence stemmed from a dispute over the gunman's dog, a bull mastiff named Roxy. Earlier on Monday, the animal had been declared dangerous in court."They all came home from court and then the suspect armed himself and went to the victim's house," St. Lucie County Sheriff Ken Mascara said at a news conference.Authorities said that after police officers and deputies arrived at the scene on Monday, they entered the home and exchanged gunfire with Delserro, who was armed with two handguns.An officer was shot in the arm and was treated at the hospital and later released.A SWAT Team later discovered Delserro dead inside the house, according to police. It's unclear how he died.In a truly tragic development, police said Harper Hansman was the person who called 911 before her death.According to the Port St. Lucie Police Department, the feud dated back to March 4, when Delserro's bull mastiff attacked and bit a woman who lived at the victims' home.That eventually led to a court hearing in which the animal was declared dangerous."I believe this to be an intentional act of violence against these neighbors," said Port St. Lucie Assistant Police Chief Richard DelToro on Monday. CLEVELAND, Ohio. – Following shootings inside houses of worship around the world, many churches are reconsidering their security measures. “We celebrate our love for Christ and our love for each other,” said Senior Pastor Kregg Burris at First Baptist Church of Greater Cleveland Ohio. Instead of just focusing on the message of faith, pastors like Kregg are now having to put more thought into keeping their congregation safe during services. “There's the old sense that I’m going to trust God,” he said. “Then there’s the realism of, well in the world we live in where people don’t recognize and understand the sacredness of the space.” He said the congregation has had to take steps in order to try and protect their people, but do it in a respectful manner. Just over a year ago, the security team was formed. “We just live in a world where reality exists that some people have a different world view than we have,” said Monroe Goins, a member of the church and part of the security team, who has almost three decades of law enforcement experience. From using walkie talkie to installing security cameras and new door systems, First Baptist of Greater Cleveland has implemented a number of safety measures since 2018. “I believe churches should have a plan in place,” he said. Following attacks at a church in Charleston, South Carolina, a mosque in New Zealand, and multiple houses of worship in Texas, Goins said he has seen an increase in violence. Now, the state of Ohio is taking a hands on approach. The Ohio Emergency Management Agency announced they now have a toolkit to help, available to download for free. “We’ve seen across the country the incidents,” said Tom Stickrath, the Director of the Ohio Department of Public Safety. “And how tragic they can be.” The toolkit provides presentations, planning documents, and case studies for churches.“It’s a tool people can choose to use,” Stickrath said. “It’s been downloaded more than 600 times by organizations in 29 states.” That was only a week after the toolkit was released.“It provided scenario-based tabletop exercises,” Goins said.
