PARKLAND, Florida — As students at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School return from spring break, they will face several new security changes at the school.On Monday, students will receive clear backpacks for free, and the superintendent says those will be the only backpacks allowed on campus.The thousands of students at the school will also now wear a school identification badge everywhere on campus.This comes after the deadly school shooting in February that killed 17 people, but also after a series of incidents the week leading up to spring break.Two students were charged with bringing weapons on campus, and a third made a threat on social media.Deputies also arrested the confessed shooter’s brother for trespassing on the school property. Zachary Cruz pleaded no contest Thursday and sentenced to time served and six months of probation.A Broward County sheriff’s deputy was also suspended for allegedly sleeping in his patrol car while on duty at the school.Florida Highway Patrol will also have eight troopers stationed at the school entrances. The Broward County School district is providing additional security as well.This district will also consider metal detectors, metal detector wands, and trying to consolidate the point of entry for students and staff.The memorial that honored their classmates for the past six weeks is no longer there. PHOENIX (AP) — A federal court in Maryland has ruled that the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals program must be restored fully, meaning it must open up to new applicants for the first time in three years.The program helps immigrants who were brought to the U.S. as children to legally work and protects them from deportation. Last month, the U.S. Supreme Court ruled that President Donald Trump didn't properly end the program in 2017.Roughly 650,000 people are enrolled in DACA, but only those who were already in the program when it ended have been able to renew.The U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services said it is reviewing the ruling.The attorney general of California, Xavier Becerra, led the multistate coalition in the lawsuit that sought to restore DACA.After the court’s ruling, Becerra said, "From the Supreme Court down, the courts have made it clear: DACA stands, and now its doors are open to new Dreamers to apply. POINT LOMA, Calif., (KGTV)— Rainy conditions did not deter thousands of people from participating in the Second Annual Walk Against Hate-San Diego. “I walk for peace and for equal rights for people,” a pre-teen participant said. Three thousand five hundred people joined the Anti-Defamation League’s biggest event of the year, walking to show that San Diego is no place for hate. “Especially in the aftermath of something that is so tragic happening to our community,” ADL-San Diego’s Director of Development, Lindsey Zipkin said. Still fresh in the minds of participants is the Poway Synagogue Shooting on April 27, 2019. Zipkin said there was a huge jump in registration, right after the tragedy.“It gives people a really great way to come together to support one another and to celebrate diversity and respect. And really show that this is really what San Diego is about. (KGTV) — An unusual fossil deposit was discovered during construction at the State Route 11/Otay Mesa East Port of Entry Project, yielding remains that may be up to 28 million years old.The state Department of Transportation says skeletal remains of extinct mammals — including camels, oreodonts, rodents, and possibly a large carnivore — were discovered at the site of the SR-11 and Otay Mesa East Port of Entry project.The fossils are estimated to be somewhere between 16 to 28 million years old, or Earth's Tertiary Period, and could provide more insight into our area's history.Paleo Monitors from the San Diego Natural History Museum found the remains in what appears to be a new geologic formation that has yet to be mapped in the region. The area also contains plant fossils and volcanic bombs (or pieces of rock ejected by a volcano), the DOT says.The Nat will curate and catalog the fossils into its paleontology program.The construction project, which will create a new port of entry into the country, will continue as planned, the state said. 1080
