SAN DIEGO (AP) — Eric Hosmer hit three-run doubles in consecutive innings to ruin Madison Bumgarner's Arizona Diamondbacks debut and give the San Diego Padres a 7-2 victory in Jayce Tingler’s first game as manager. The six RBIs tied Hosmer’s career-high and gave 24-year-old right-hander Chris Paddack the win in his first opening day start. Hosmer’s doubles came off Bumgarner in the sixth inning and Kevin Ginkel in the seventh. Both were with two outs. The 30-year-old Bumgarner allowed only two hits before struggling in the sixth. The Friars continue their four-game season-opening series against the Diamondbacks on Saturday.RELATED COVERAGE: Cardboard Padres fans to fill Petco Park's stands during 2020 seasonLocal company to help fill silence during MLB seasonFan hoping to "share" view overlooking Petco Park during baseball season 847

SAN DIEGO — More than 100 thousand San Diegans have lost their jobs amid the coronavirus outbreak, and some of those positions have disappeared forever. But a new report from the San Diego and Imperial Counties Community College Association has identified 66 jobs as pandemic resilient.“It's an expensive place to live, this county, and so we need people to be able to have jobs that will be able to help sustain their families,” said Dr. Sunny Cooke, superintendent of the MiraCosta Community College District.Cooke said the community colleges offer an affordable way to train for positions wanted now. Each unit costs , so a typical certificate training program would cost about ,760.Additionally, the report identifies 27 jobs as middle skill, meaning they require more than a high school diploma but less than a four-year degree. It report includes an interactive list of fields, and which local community colleges offer programs related to them.“We want people to get in now, get a short term training, get into a field, stabilize their family and their lives, and then have a ladder to more, longer-term training and education that they seek and they desire,” cooke said. The identified jobs run the gamut from web developers and cyber security analysts to medical assistants, registered nurses, machinists, social service workers and biotech technicians, to name a few.In all, the report says the average entry level salary for the jobs is ,000, with room for growth. 1488

SAN DIEGO (CNS) - A bill that would keep court hearings related to the release of Sexually Violent Predators open to the public was unveiled Tuesday by a state senator who worked with the San Diego County District Attorney's Office to craft the legislation.SB 1023, dubbed the Sexually Violent Predator Act, would prohibit proceedings related to Sexually Violent Predators -- or SVPs -- from being held behind closed doors, particularly when the hearings involve potentially releasing the offenders to a conditional housing program in the community.Recently, hearings regarding the proposed release and placement of SVP Alvin Ray Quarles, 57, otherwise known as the "Bolder-Than-Most" rapist, were held behind closed doors in San Diego County Superior Court.Judge David Gill kept the hearings under wraps due to privacy concerns over the potential disclosure of Quarles' psychiatric reports. The closed-door nature of the hearings drew protests from victims' advocates, include two of Quarles' victims, Mary Taylor and Cynthia Medina.Sen. Patricia Bates, R-Laguna Niguel, who authored SB 1023, issued a joint statement with San Diego County District Attorney Summer Stephan, saying SVP hearings should be held in open court "unless compelling and extraordinary circumstances justify closing the courtroom to the public.""District Attorney Summer Stephan and I believe that court hearings for sexually violent predators should be open to the public unless a judge can provide a compelling reason," Bates said. "Victims, their families, and the public have a legitimate interest in witnessing hearings through which a predator might be released."Gill ruled last year that Quarles should be released to a conditional housing program, though that decision is currently being appealed by the District Attorney's Office.Quarles, who was previously sentenced to 50 years in prison for committing more than a dozen sexual assaults in the mid-to-late 1980s, was slated to be housed at a residence in Jacumba Hot Springs, but that agreement fell through."This important legislation supports the principles of democracy and transparency in our justice system by making sure court hearings for sexually violent predators are open to the public," Stephan said. "As District Attorney, I hear the pain from victims who've been terrorized by a sexual predator but are left in the dark and not able to learn pertinent information guaranteed to them by our open courts system."The bill is awaiting referral to a Senate policy committee, Bates' staff said. 2544

SAN CLEMENTE, Calif. (KGTV) -- A mother of three, nearly killed when a great white shark bit her in April, is paying it forward after countless people donated tens of thousands of dollars to help with her medical bill and living expenses while she recovers.Leeanne Ericson of Vista was the guest bartender Monday evening at Cassano’s in San Clemente. It was originally a fundraiser for Ericson. She decided to give the night’s donations to the Torrey Pines Surf Ministry which takes Wounded Warriors, and others with physical disabilities, surfing.Ericson lost much of her right thigh when the shark bit her April 29.“Leeanne was out swimming while I surfed, and a great white, mistaken identity, though she was a sea lion and took her instead,” her boyfriend Dusty Phillips said.Related:  801

SAN DIEGO (CNS) - A former Mira Mesa dentist who bilked insurance companies out of hundreds of thousands of dollars by submitting claims for procedures she never performed, including hundreds of supposed root canals, has been sentenced to six years in state prison, the San Diego County District Attorney's Office announced today.April Rose Ambrosio, 59, pleaded guilty to three counts of insurance fraud earlier this year for fraudulently billing insurance companies for 6,700, for which she received more than 0,000 from 10 insurance companies, according to prosecutors. The DA's Office said Ambrosio falsely claimed she performed 800 root canals on 100 patients, despite not having specialized training as an endodontist to perform such procedures.Ambrosio was sentenced earlier this month, and in addition to a six- year prison term, was ordered to pay 5,633 in restitution. Her license to practice dentistry was also suspended last year, a few months after she was charged.Prosecutors say the fraud occurred between 2014 and 2018. During that time, Ambrosio billed for work she said occurred on days her office was closed and billed for more than 100 root canals during a three- month period, all of which were supposedly performed for a family of four, according to the DA's Office. She also billed for root canals on teeth patients didn't have or double billed for teeth she previously said she performed root canals on, the DA's Office said.``The way this defendant bilked the system is astounding,'' District Attorney Summer Stephan said. ``Unfortunately, when insurance companies get ripped off, consumers ultimately pay the price through higher premiums.'' 1683
