And that is exactly what happened to a mother and daughter duo from Escondido. Ruth and Emilia have had to find other ways to perform their environmentally themed music."It's always entertaining, you never know what is going to happen."The two have a love for children's music, as their lyrics, and performances always provide a learning experience for their young audience."We have two messages in our music," says Ruth. "One is taking care of the environment, and the other is acceptance of others to make the world a better place." Emilia says one other goal is also to keep the music fun and lively. "So that it would be something grown-ups don't mind listening to in the car, but also that kids enjoy dancing to."Prior to the pandemic, Ruth and Emilia planned a summer tour of libraries, children's museums, and kids festivals, but when the Coronavirus hit, those plans changed."Our CD release party was canceled because it happened the same day all the stay at home starting taking place."So the duo has had to adapt, and change the way they could reach their audience."We found other outlets, like doing live shows on Facebook and on Instagram. And even seeing if we could expand to people we wouldn't necessarily see on our tour."However, some good news came from the pandemic, as it brought mother and daughter closer together. Emilia has made her way back to Escondido for the time being, from her home in Los Angeles. "We don't get to see each other everyday," says Emilia. "Now, Ruth and Emilia as a unit, can flourish some new stuff that we haven't been able to do, but have been wanting to do for a while." 1754

There is no stop sign on Country Club Drive. But Jason Farr is at a stand-still. "I can't get in and out of our neighborhood," Farr said. Farr's concern is that Country Club Drive is the only way in and out of his community."If emergency crews need to get here… If there are a couple of feet of water on top of the bridge, that's one thing, but if there's more like I saw yesterday, they just won't be able to get in and out," Farr said. He said he has several elderly neighbors who no longer have the strength or speed to evacuate at once. The flooding also trap his children from getting to school. "We have to be constantly be deciding if we want to bring our kids to school. Because I do not feel comfortable dropping my kids off to school and them not being able to be picked up," Farr said. While the water receded overnight, by 8:30 AM Wednesday the water crested back over the road. Farr said his neighbors told him that the severity of the problem got much worse as new developments sprouted into the once lonely neighborhood. All the drainage is being funneled down hill,” Farr said. “We’re just the end of the hill, and we're paying the price for it."Farr said while this is a flooding issue now, come summer, this one way in, one way out street to his community will become a fire hazard. Fast food jobs pay some of the lowest wages in the country, giving workers little reason to stick around if they get a better offer and proving costly to employers who need to find people to replace them.In California, one Chick-fil-A franchisee says he's trying to break the cycle.Eric Mason, who for the last three years has owned a Chick-fil-A off the highway near the Sacramento airport, says that next week he'll start hiring "hospitality professionals" starting at an hour, up from the to an hour he pays now."When we go to the living wage, we're looking for people who are trying to raise families, improve their lifestyle," he told ABC10 News on May 26."Maybe they could just work one job, and then it's sustainable. What that does for the business is provide consistency, someone that has relationships with our guests. It's going to be building a long-term culture."Mason's marketing manager Marena Weisman confirmed to CNNMoney that the franchise would be hiring between 35 and 45 people at the new rate, for work in both the front and the back of the house, and that all current employees are encouraged to apply for the positions.According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, fast food cooks in the Sacramento area make an average of .42 an hour, about a dollar higher than the national level.Even though California's minimum wage is currently an hour, and will rise steadily to by 2022, Mason's jump is unusual."All responsible employers are preparing for the impact of the increasing minimum wage, but they are usually doing it over time and planning for it," says Carey Klosterman, director of research and compensation services at the California Employers Association.One reason why: Even employees making just a little bit more than the minimum wage tend to expect raises too. So if employers raise wages too quickly, it can get expensive."While increasing the wage to this level at a fast food restaurant is commendable, I don't foresee that many businesses will likely be following in their footsteps," Klosterman says.Such big hikes in wages are also especially rare in franchised industries, where the headquarters often charges steep royalties and controls many aspects of the operation — including prices and promotions. That can make life difficult for franchisees in areas with higher fixed costs like wages."If you're in a territory where labor is much higher than the rest of the country, you could be underwater," says Peter Lagarias, an attorney for franchisees based in San Rafael, California. "When these kinds of pressures all build up, you can understand that franchisees are hurting."Lagarias hasn't seen the franchise agreement for Chick-fil-A, which is relatively new to California, so it's not clear whether an owner-operator could pass along increased labor costs by charging higher prices. Chick-fil-A is unusual in that each owner is limited to one store apiece, which keeps them more involved in day-to-day operations.A spokeswoman from Chick-fil-A's corporate office said only that local operators make their own hiring and wage decisions.However, Mason's strategy could pay off in the long run.Research has shown that raising wages can reduce turnover, which in the restaurant industry can be as high as 100% per year. Each time a worker leaves, it costs the restaurant owner money because they then have to fill the shift with someone else.Mason is also correct to point out that many low-wage workers have to hold down multiple jobs at a time in order to survive, and that full-time work at a livable wage is something many would try hard to keep."The reason people leave low wage jobs is that they're trying to find something just a little bit better," says Sylvia Allegretto, a labor economist at the University of California, Berkeley.At an hour, Mason's "hospitality professional" positions could be practically immune from turnover."You're going to try very hard to get that job, and you're going to be a very good, diligent productive worker," Allegretto says. "Because if you lose that job, your next job will be back down close to the minimum wage."That may position Mason's store to succeed in what's rapidly become a job seekers' market. Sacramento's unemployment rate tracks the national average, which is currently 3.9%. That's the lowest rate it's been since 2000 and it's expected to keep dropping through 2018.A wage would also allow Mason to be picky with the people he hires, and according to a job description, those expectations are high.A successful applicant, it reads, "must love to smile & connect with people, make eye contact & speak enthusiastically" and "makes working hard and delivering high standards look easy and effortless, enabling others to be efficient and effortless as well." 4858

  

ENCINITAS, Calif. (KGTV) - A beloved custodian at an elementary school in Encinitas is recovering after a spider bite led to an amputation."He's happy. He's smiling. Thankful he's alive," said Megan Luce, PTA President at Park Dale Lane Elementary School.Guil Aguilar has been a custodian at the school for more than five years."His spirits are so high when I visited," said Luce.Luce says his ordeal began at work, just before Thanksgiving break. Aguilar says as he was moving trash cans near a dumpster, he saw spiders but didn't think anything of it. After he left the area, he felt a twinge in his foot. He went with family to visit relatives in Arizona during Thanksgiving and his bite began to swell. He was admitted into a hospital, then transferred to an Encinitas hospital, where doctors diagnosed him with a venomous spider bite. The type of spider is unknown. The treatment was not enough."There was an infection that they tried to clean out. The infection resulted in amputation of his foot and partial leg," said Luce.Luce says Aguilar handled the difficult news by focusing on the bright side."He was okay with it. He'd rather his foot be gone than his life," said Luce.As news of his ordeal spread, parents at the school rallied."I was heartbroken. He's such as an amazing, amazing person ... Always happy. He's always there to help. Goes over and beyond what he's supposed to do at the school," said Luce.The parents organized a meal train and a Gofundme campaign to help his family, including his five children, with expenses."He's not just a janitor. He's part of the community and part of the Park Dale Lane family," said Luce.The Encinitas Union School District issued the following statement: "The situation that you are inquiring about involves one of our employees and is currently under investigation by the District. Due to privacy rights and confidentiality laws, we are unable to provide an update on the employee ... In an abundance of caution, the District has taken the necessary precautions to ensure that all areas of campus have been inspected and are safe. The District will continue to monitor the campus and address any issues immediately." 2186

  

Enrollment in public schools nationwide has gone down during the pandemic. According to data obtained by Chalkbeat and The Associated Press, enrollment dipped by about 2% since last year.Experts say several factors are to blame. Many students struggled to attend classes online, so they have been expelled from school for missing too many days. Also, kindergarten isn't required in some states.Surprisingly though, remote learning is more popular among parents than originally thought, according to a Pew survey.That's not to say all parents are on-board with virtual learning. In the grand scope, more parents prefer in-person instruction.Educators are more dissatisfied with virtual learning. About two thirds of teachers said students weren't prepared for grade-level work because of distanced learning.They also said students who were fully remote were completing less of their assignments and were absent more often. Teachers also reported high levels of stress and burnout.In a separate study by RAND Corporation, a nonprofit research organization, superintendents said they'd like to keep virtual schooling as an option after the pandemic.“The reasons the superintendents said they wanted to keep online schools after the pandemic really related to parental demand, so they cited reasons like retaining student enrollment in their district. Enrollment is the way that districts get funding and also the benefits of offering more choices to students and parents,” said Heather Schwartz, PK-12 Program Director and Senior Policy Researcher at RAND Corporation.The survey also found lower-income students are suffering the most during this time.“Low-income students are likely to attend schools that are fully remote during the pandemic than upper- and middle-income students. And it's the lower income parents on the surveys who are more concerned about their children falling behind academically during the pandemic,” said Schwartz.Lower income students are less likely to have the devices and internet access necessary for online learning.While there are some resources to help lower income families, researchers at RAND Corporation are making a recommendation. They want to see the federal government develop open-source curriculum materials that are of high quality and specifically for online instruction. 2323
