Five new cottages in the International Village are about to open up, housing 9 new cultural groups. Work is almost complete on a brand new pedestrian plaza, replacing half of the parking lot in front of the Air and Space Museum.RELATED: City to replace 144 parking spaces with plazaNext to the plaza, the Comic-Con Museum still plans a grand opening in the summer of 2021 in the building that used to be the Hall of Champions.And the Save Starlight group just revealed new plans for a complete overhaul of the Starlight Bowl theater, which has been closed since 2010."The placement of the museum in that area couldn't have been any better," says Melissa Peterman, the VP of Development for the Comic-Con Museum. "We want to do our part to help elevate the Palisades and revitalize it in the way that Plaza de Panama was."The pandemic allowed the Comic-Con Museum to get a head start on their online offerings, while still working on building renovations and exhibit planning.The Starlight plans show new terraced lawn seating, nature gardens, walking trails, and smaller stages surrounding the main bowl.Save Starlight President Steve Stopper says work is already underway on some of the smaller parts of the renovation, so they can build excitement over the coming months."It creates a window for people to get behind the idea," he says. "They can see this is really viable for the future."Stopper says it's an exciting time to be around the park, as it adds more gems to the Crown Jewel of San Diego. 2669

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - As the world grieves the loss of Aretha Franklin, a local woman is recalling her final and historic San Diego concert on Shelter Island.Linda Moody is the widow of saxophone legend James Moody, who died in 2010. In 2005 during a newspaper interview, an excited Franklin, in town for a concert, learned Moody lived in San Diego. Gower Preserve near Ramona, Wilderness Gardens in Pala, Agua Caliente Regional Park in Anza Borrego, and Vallecito County Park near Julian.Agua Caliente Regional Park and Vallecito County Park are closed all summer until Labor Day weekend.The closure also gives park staff the chance to perform maintenance and other upgrades and restoration projects.For hiking and park areas that remain open all summer, county Parks and Recreation officials encourage visitors to always hike with others, leave pets at home on difficult hikes, take plenty of water and food, and dress appropriately for the activity. 913

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - As re-closures loom in San Diego County, anxiety is building.Licensed Psychologist Dr. Michelle Carcel said she and other colleagues noticed higher anxiety and depression among those who are isolating."Then there's the reality of, 'okay the cases are surging and things are starting to shut down again,' so there is that isolation anxiety," Dr. Carcel said, explaining we are pack animals and can feel in danger if alone for extended periods of time.She said on the flip side, some are feeling a sense of comfort in a new routine that's taking root, as we enter the fourth month of the pandemic.The possibility of all indoor activities getting shut down Monday threatens that new normal many have created.Dr. Carcel said there are still options to get together, "we can get creative with this. There's hiking outdoors, there's biking we can do. All of that within the context of social distancing." Another anxiety is the job market. While unemployment is down for the sixth straight week, SANDAG said 200,000 San Diegans are still out of work.Dr. Carcel acknowledges these times are hard but it is important to have hope. "We're just constantly thinking in absolutes, 'Oh it will never reopen. It will never get better,' that is a very bad way to think, we actually want to think about this being temporary because it will be."She impressed the importance of vaccines being developed at light speed and suggested those who are anxious about the re-closures should create a game plan."We talk about a cope ahead plan on specific things we can do in lieu of things we are currently enjoying if things shut down again so that we're not disappointed," Dr. Carcel said.She reminded us this is temporary, and we will make it through. 1755
