SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - San Diego veterans from WWII and the Korean War are getting ready for a special trip. This weekend they'll board an Honor Flight to Washington D.C.10News is getting exclusive access to the trip and was at Honor Flight San Diego's last planning meeting before the special weekend gets off the ground. David Smith, Founder of Honor Flight San Diego, says it's incredibly important to thank our veterans while there's still time. The oldest veteran on this weekend's flight will be 99-years-old. "I've actually had veterans come up to me and say, 'ya know, in all these years no one has ever said thank you to me - this means so much'," said Smith.The group relies on fundraising to make the honor flight a reality - it costs 0,000 for the entire weekend.Our coverage of the Honor Flight continues Friday morning when Reporter Amanda Brandeis boards the plane with the veterans and will continue through Sunday when they all return to San Diego. Honor Flight San Diego welcomes the community to join the Sunday's homecoming at the San Diego International Airport. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - SANDAG's Board of Directors passed the 3.4 million budget at their meeting on Friday The proposal includes the largest transportation projects in the county. The budget will used between now and the end of the 2025 Fiscal Year.The vote passed 11 (yes) - 7 (no) - 1 (abstain).As part of SANDAG's proposed "Five Big Moves" initiative to modernize transportation in the city, the money will be put towards "Complete Corridor" projects.RELATED: SANDAG leaders unveil bold vision for future of public transit in San DiegoAccording to a budget proposal released this week, the majority of the money will go towards transit and public transportation-based projects.However, Poway Mayor and SANDAG chair, Steve Vaus presented a revised budget with co-author, Escondido mayor, Paul McNamara. Some of the items in the budget include million for new trolley cars on the Blue Line, .8 million to purchase two new coaster trains for the North County Transit District, and million for preliminary designs on a central mobility hub. The Vaus-McNamara budget pulled the million slated to convert HOV lanes on the 5 North to express lanes, to road expansion projects in North County. million will be allocated to environmental studies and designs for new HOV lanes along SR78 between I-5 and I-15. million will be used to add lanes for SR 52, and the notoriously dangerous state route 67. "The transit plan for SANDAG is to get 10% of the people using transit, which leaves 90% of the rest of us all on roads," says County Supervisor and SANDAG Board Member Jim Desmond. Voters approved it in 2004 as a way to fund freeway projects. The current budget has 0 million of money from the tax. He says the County needs to hit specific benchmarks to reduce greenhouse gas emissions to get more funding."If we are to sustain ourselves and preserve our quality of life, we need to provide our residents with an alternative," he says. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — San Diego Police say the man found shot behind a Midway District strip mall was the victim of an armed robbery.Police received a call on Wednesday just after 6 p.m. over shots fired and a vehicle collision in the 3600 block of Midway Dr. Officers arrived to find a grey Acura had crashed into a retaining wall behind several businesses. Inside, the driver had been shot at least once.The man, identified as 18-year-old Eduardo Salguero of San Diego, was taken to a nearby hospital but died of his injuries.Investigators say they've learned that Salguero had arranged to purchase an item through Snapchat. When he arrived to meet the sellers, two Hispanic males entered his vehicle. During the meeting, one of the suspects pulled out a handgun and the transaction turned into an armed robbery.Multiple gunshots were fired inside the vehicle, police said. The two suspects then fled on foot. Police only described the suspects as Hispanic males, between 20-30 years old, who were wearing dark clothing at the time. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- Six months after closing its doors to the public due to the COVID-19 pandemic, SeaWorld San Diego is reopening through their weekend Zoo Days Bayside BBQ and Brews events. The special event will take place every weekend until SeaWorld can fully open. The park's attractions will be very limited, with guests able to enjoy all outdoor animals exhibits and shows."We’re opening as an accredited zoo and you can come in and enjoy all the live animal presentations we’re world famous for like the Orca Encounter, dolphins, Sea Lions Live and all the outdoor exhibits that people love and miss," said SeaWorld Park President Marilyn Hannes..Among closed signs for indoor exhibits, game rooms and rides, guests will also notice dozens of sanitizer stations, distance markers and download codes for digital park maps spread throughout.Visitors will also be able to continue enjoying the tide pool areas. "The water is highly filtrated, each of the systems were designed to be a touch pool so they have a high filtration and so that constant turnout makes it safe to do the interaction," Hannes said.Although some of the attractions are closed, Hannes said new ones will take its place, adding, "We’ve opened up Vistas to the Bay so we have a new waterfront area where you can that ocean breeze and try craft beers."Zoo Days will take place every Friday through Sunday from 11 a.m.-7 p.m. The event has a limited capacity and purchasing a ticket online acts as a reservation. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Starting Monday, San Diego County residents will be able to cast their ballots early for the Nov. 3 election.The San Diego County Registrar of Voters office in Kearny Mesa, located at 5600 Overland Ave., will be open from 8 a.m.-5 p.m. to allow San Diegans to vote early.Due to coronavirus-related health and safety restrictions, voters must wear a mask and practice social distancing. Officials believe this election will bring out the county’s highest voter turnout to date.The San Diego County Democratic Party came to the Registrar of Voters to promote early voting, saying it will speed up the results.Will Rodriguez-Kennedy, the Chair of the San Diego Democratic Party, said, “If you want to have the count and not be waiting election night … The more people that vote early the better for everyone, the results will come in sooner.”In a statement sent to ABC 10News, the county’s Republican Party said they are “encouraging Republicans to vote early.”Meanwhile, officials said ballots are being mailed out on Monday to the 1.9 million registered voters in San Diego County.This summer, citing restrictions brought on by the COVID-19 pandemic, state officials said all registered California voters would receive mail-in ballots.
