SAN DIEGO (KGTV)-- Thousands of members of the LGBTQ Community and their allies lined the streets of Hillcrest to celebrate the San Diego Pride Parade Saturday morning. More than 200 floats were on display at this year's event. We asked the crowd, "What does "Pride" mean to you?""It means finally being able to live out and proud.""It's the freedom to celebrate who we are.""Love our neighbor as ourselves and love God!"Some have been coming to the San Diego Pride Parade for decades. "Oh my gosh, she's been 26 years of marching in pride with me," Dana Harwood said of her mother. "...And I love my lesbian daughter!" her mother, Bobbi said. For others, this year's parade is their debut to the world. "Fours months ago, I started my transition," Grace McBride said. "I am just so happy now that I came out to be authentic."For 55 years, people called her Dale. But today, she is proudly Grace."Dale was struggling. Dale was a Marine. Dale worked for the cable company, and anymore now I just want to share the love," McBride said. It has been a long struggle for the LGBTQ community. The most notable moment was the Stonewall Riots in 1969, where New York Police raided LGBTQ members staying at the Stonewall Inn. "Stonewall gave us a sense of freedom. A sense of power," Drag Queen Vera Del Mar said.Vera Del Mar grew up in National City but now lives in Tucson. She made it a point to make it back to her hometown Pride this year."I had to show off my new hairdo!" she said.What was once considered 'underground' or 'shameful' has now become part of mainstream culture, even mainstream media. This year, many familiar faces of the 10News team joined the 10News float and greeted parade-goers. 14-year-old Alexis Engelmann came out as lesbian last year. She says she is lucky to have her entire family in her corner. "It's cool because it's not really different at all," her younger brother Mile said. "We just like to support her and help her succeed in life."Like the thousands of people at the parade, Alexis is proud. She is celebrating, not hiding her Pride. "I love them [my family] so much, and I am so grateful," Alexis said. If you missed the Pride Parade this morning, there are plenty of other things to do around Hillcrest. SAN DIEGO, Calif. (KGTV) - A new group of leaders has the California GOP ready to take on the 2020 elections and rebound from a disastrous 2018 cycle.Over the weekend, the GOP elected Jessica Patterson as their state-wide Chair. She's the first woman and first Latina to ever hold the top spot in the state party.They also elected a Taiwanese immigrant, Peter Kuo, as Vice-Chair. And the new Treasurer, Greg Gandrud, is openly gay.Analysts say that gives them a more diverse group of leaders that can reach out to more voters across the state.But newly elected Secretary Randy Berholtz, who lives in San Diego, says their election within the party had nothing to do with demographics."I think what the delegates did is pick the best person for each of the positions," Berholtz says. "It just so happens that the people were of different ethnicities and sexes and ages and everything else."Berholtz says he saw an energized party at the convention, ready to bounce back from 2018.In that election, Republicans lost 7 seats in the US House of Representatives. Loses in local legislative races also gave democrats a super-majority in the California House and Senate. Republicans only hold 19 or 80 seats in the House and 11 of 40 seats in the Senate.The election also continued a streak of no Republicans winning statewide office since 2006.Berholtz says a strong Republican party is a good thing for the state."California needs to have a good second party," he says. "If not, nobody's watching the party in power. And we want to tell the voters that we're watching."In the last election, Republicans only made up 24% of the registered voters. That put them behind Democrats and people who registered as "No Preference."Political analyst John Dadian says it could take as long as 10 years for the GOP to turn that around."The main strategy has to be to bring some of those, 'prefer not to state' voters back," says Dadian. "It's all in the messaging, because California isn't just a blue state, it's a deep-blue state."Berholtz says his party will use a focus on family, personal initiative and good government to turn the tide. He also says they'll look to a more grass roots campaign to try and elect leaders from the bottom-up."We're energized right now," he says. "We're all going out and speaking, finding great candidates, doing voter registration, improving our message and just telling people in California that there is a viable alternative and we have not given up on you." 2489

SAN DIEGO, Calif. (KGTV) -- One lucky couple will spend the rest of their lives together after crossing the finish line at America's Finest City half marathon together. The couple got engaged at the finish line in Balboa Park.The half marathon kicked off at the Cabrillo National Monument. Participants ran through Point Loma, past the San Diego Bay, the Embarcadero and ended in Balboa Park.The half-marathon is part of a series of racing called the Triple Crown, which means if runners participated in the La Jolla and Carlsbad marathons, they received a special medal today. Proceeds from the race go to several local charities.  660

SAN FRANCISCO (AP) -- A federal judge says California can't ban vanity license plates it considers "offensive to good taste and decency" because that violates freedom of speech.Tuesday's ruling in San Francisco took aim at a Department of Motor Vehicles rule.The judge said personalized plates are a form of expression by vehicle owners and rules governing them must be "viewpoint-neutral" even if the messages offend.The ruling comes in a lawsuit filed on behalf of five people who were denied permission for their plate messages, including a gay Oakland man who wanted to use the word "QUEER" on his plate. 616

San Diego Democratic delegate Jess Durfee has attended the last four of his party's conventions to select the presidential nominee.Some days, he spends more than 15 hours attending meetings, luncheons and waiting for major speeches on the floor."There is nothing like attending a convention," he says.There is also nothing like the Democratic National Convention for 2020, which begins Monday. It's going all virtual in the midst of the Coronavirus outbreak. It starts with a keynote speech from Sen. Bernie Sanders, and will conclude Thursday when Joe Biden officially accepts the presidential nomination. Durfee used to attend with his San Diego counterparts. This year he was supposed to go to the convention in Milwaukee. Instead, he'll be joining from his home office in University Heights. "We would normally be seeing one another, even having breakfast together... We'd grab a couple of tables, and say 'these are San Diego tables, get away,'" he said, jokingly.The same virtual format will apply for the Republican National Convention, happening next week. Thad Kousser, a political scientist at UC San Diego, says these conventions are essentially one long political ad. The business of the party is not the priority - it's getting voters excited for November."The big question here is whether America will want to watch something that looks like the Zoom meetings many of us have been in all day," he said. But Kousser said there is intense political interest that could push up viewership. In 2016, 26 million people tuned in for the opening night of the Democratic National Convention.Durfee said if there is a drop off in viewership for the Democrats, he expects the same issue next week when the Republicans hold their convention. 1752
