But now with a limit on volunteers and a lack of funding, conservation efforts are stretched thin.“We have 72 miles of coastline that we will take turtles in from, and those 72 miles of coastline actually hold the largest population of nesting Loggerhead sea turtles in the world,” Jessica Patterson explained. We as a community are not on the beach seeing them because a lot of people are opting to stay home to stay safe,” she said. On this day, two morning volunteers were feeding the turtles and giving them any needed medication.“A lot of the sea turtle rescues are probably struggling, again, in terms of personnel,” she said. However Patterson considers her team fortunate, because this center, unlike most, is part of a zoo.“This is sea turtle nesting season and hatchling season and we have not cut back on that work,” Keith Winsten, Brevard Zoo Executive Director, said. “A lot of places did have to dramatically cut their mission-based work but we have kept moving forward with it.”Brevard Zoo is a nonprofit zoo that is accredited by the Association of Zoos and Aquariums.“We’ve always said OK we’ll jump in with both feet to get her done, and we’ll figure out how to pay for it later,” he said. “We're having to figure out how to pay for things later right now as much as any place.”As with many businesses, the customer is their bread and butter.“Since 90 percent of our dollars are earned from people coming through the gate, that means we are down a really significant amount in terms of income,” Winsten said.“After reopening we realized we really needed to raise another million dollars to keep us fiscally sound,” he said.Another project the zoo helps with is the restoration and conservation of the Indian River Lagoon.“Which runs 156 miles north to south,” Jake Zehnder, Brevard Zoo Conservation Manager, said. “It is considered one of the most biodiverse estuaries in North America.” Zehnder works to help repair the lagoon, which lines right down the road from the zoo.“We work here in the Indian River Lagoon to help repair decades of damage and nutrient pollution,” he explained.However unlike the sea turtles, the funding for this project is a little more stable. “In Brevard County there's a sales tax for restoring the lagoon,” Winsten explained. “That allows us to keep moving through this pandemic.”They also rely on large groups of volunteers, but right now, large gatherings are not allowed due to COVID-19.Even with a lack of funding and helping hands, the health of the environment and local wildlife continue to be a priority.“Sea turtles are like the sentinels of ocean health. If you see a population of sea turtles dwindling in an area, it’s a good indicator that the health of that area is not doing very well,” Patterson said.“Every time we release a turtle, it's like a victory for the whole community. Everybody feels we’ve done something good to make up for the significant impacts we have,” Winsten said. Microsoft took legal steps to dismantle a system that has allowed criminal hackers to infect more than a million computing devices since 2016, in order to protect the 2020 election.The technology company obtained a court order from a federal judge in Virginia that gives Microsoft control of the Trickbot botnet.Microsoft, along with partners around the world, were able to make it so those operating Trickbot cannot initiate new infections or activate ransomware already in computer systems.Trickbot botnet is a global network believed to be run by Russian-speaking criminals, and is “one of the world’s most infamous botnets and prolific distributors of ransomware” according to a blog post by Tom Burt, Corporate Vice President at Microsoft.Burt says ransomware is “one of the largest threats to the upcoming elections,” and can be used to “infect a computer system used to maintain voter rolls or report on election-night results, seizing those systems at a prescribed hour optimised to sow chaos and distrust.”The move by Microsoft represents a “new legal approach” the company says they are using for the first time.In addition to protecting election systems, Microsoft says dismantling Trickbot will also protect financial services institutions, government agencies, healthcare facilities, educational institutions, and other businesses subject to malware infections. 1382

The troubling state of society is proving beneficial to one particular group: scammers.“It makes sense that Americans are feeling that kind of economic and financial pressure, it is just really terrible that scammers are taking advantage of that,” said Lucy Baker.Baker is with the U.S. Public Interest Research Group, a watchdog organization based in Washington D.C that has been tracking COVID-19-related scams since May.In May, it found around 50,000 COVID-19 scams had been reported in the FTC’s database. When it went back to check the numbers last month, reported COVID-19 scams had jumped to over 200,000.“Kind of what was more shocking and right in your face was the number, 140 million,” said Baker. "That is the amount of money that had been lost due to these COVID-19 frauds.”Most of the scams are related to companies or individuals selling fake COVID-19 cures. Some are marketing PPE that is supposed to work better but does not.In one case, people were receiving flyers in the mail that instructed them to go to a URL that was supposed to be for coronavirus relief but instead it was a ploy for a used car business to get potential customers. The car dealership even sent fake checks with the flyers, stating it was money from the CARES Act for a new vehicle.According to U.S. PIRG, most people who’ve been scammed have lost around 0 on average. However, that number doubles to 0 for victims 80 years and older.So, organizations like PIRG, the DOJ and even AARP have put out top tips to avoid falling for a COVID-19 scam.“My biggest tip is to do your homework,” said Baker. "If you receive any kind of communication that seems off, smells fishy, it is too good to be true then it probably is.”Baker’s second tip is to be vigilant."The more you are aware that something like this could happen to you, the more likely you are to be able to stop it,” she explained.Lastly, most organizations recommend if you fall victim to a scam, report it. It is important to report it, regardless of how much money was lost or how embarrassed you may feel, because the more reported cases authorities get, the more information they have on the scams and scammers.
