The photo is shocking. A young mother passed out in the front seat of her car, a syringe clutched in her fist.What you can't see in the photo is the back seat, where her infant son sat crying.That was a year ago this month -- but for Erika Hurt, it might as well be a lifetime.The 26-year-old Indiana woman says she has been clean since that day, doting on her son and working a full-time job.And the photo, which at first was a source of anger and humiliation, illustrates the slippery line between sobriety and despair."I was sober. I stopped going to meetings. I forgot about how bad the addiction got," Hunt told CNN about that period in her life last year. "This photo helped me look back. It's a constant reminder that sobriety needs to be worked at."The day the photo was shotThe day the photograph was taken, Hurt had parked in the lot of a dollar store in Hope, Indiana, to shoot up heroin. She had gotten out of a month-long stint in rehab just two weeks earlier. Her 10-month-old son was in the back seat.She rationalized his presence the same way a lot of addicts do while using in front their kids, she said: They're asleep. Or they're too young to realize what's going on.The last thing Hurt remembers from that day is pulling into the parking lot. She later learned a customer found her slumped over in the car and called 911.It took officers two doses of Narcan, the drug used to reverse an overdose in an emergency situation, to revive her."Had this woman not passed out from this and attempted to drive right afterward, she could have (driven) down the road, passed out two minutes later and hit a car with a family in it, killed every one of them," Hope Town Marshal Matthew Tallent told CNN at the time. "That's the thing that's so shocking to me to think about."What happened nextAfter a brief hospital stay came jail. Hunt had violated her probation from a previous charge in 2014.While she was waiting for her sentencing date, a local reporter requested an interview. Then another asked, and another.She didn't think much of it at the time. She found out why when she was watching the evening news.A police officer had snapped a photo of her passed out in the car. It soon went viral."I felt very humiliated, I felt very angry," she said. "You know, it was hard for me to truly believe that it was me."Hurt's story fits into a grim pattern, as research shows heroin use is on the rise in the US. The most recent United Nations' World Drug Report found that 914,000 people aged 12 years or older reported using heroin in 2014 -- a 145% increase since 2007.Where she is nowHunt has been fighting addiction all her life, she says."I had been an addict since I was 15 years old," she said. "It wasn't until I was 21 that I began seeking help -- and I was failing at it. "The overdose, captured in the photo, led to Hunt getting clean.She was sentenced to six months of intense rehab in a locked-down facility -- one that focused on the underlying issues of addiction and how to cope with them.She's part of WRAP (Women Recovering with a Purpose), a program that requires continued meetings with a therapist, a sobriety coach and multiple "self care" classes such as Narcotics Anonymous every week.Now, she works more than 40 hours a week at a local factory. She also cares for her son, but her mom has guardianship.At this point, her focus is on staying the course."If you are sober and healthy," she said, "then you can take care of everybody else." 3477

When he was a kid, memories were made on his family's farm in India.“Back then, every summer and winter vacation, I would spend my time there. I didn’t like agriculture back then, the farms didn’t have electricity or toilets. That exposed me to a lot of poverty, a lot of primitive forms of agriculture that was practiced in different parts of the world,” Chandra said.Now with a Ph.D. in computer science, he's directed that interest and curiosity toward a program within Microsoft that he leads called FarmBeats."Through this project, we want to build digital tools that can empower farmers worldwide, make their lives better, make the food they produce better,” Chandra said.Like its name, FarmBeats is centered around farms. Chandra and his team are working to bring computers and their data to farms. What if you could bring all the benefits of things like artificial intelligence, cutting edge computing and the latest digital tech to agriculture? Imagine just how it could improve a farmer's life and work.“Humans and machines need to work together. All the latest technologies we’re building when combined with human knowledge you can take them to a completely different level,” Chandra said.That next level is evident in a new partnership between Land O'Lakes and Microsoft.“Imagine a computer sitting in the barn, getting a lot of data from cameras and sensors so it can detect how the different cows are doing, whether it’s sick and in heat, what’s happening with each cow,” Chandra said.But, none of that can happen unless there's broadband. Enter in the "digital divide" which has become even more apparent during the pandemic. Land O'Lakes wants to not only bring that new tech to farmers, but bring everyone online at the same time.“A lot of our solutions were not working as well as they should have because of the connectivity issue. It hit us right in the face we’re talking about some really neat capabilities and technologies but we couldn’t use them because we didn’t have that connectivity in rural America,” said Teddy Bekele, chief technology officer at Land O'Lakes.Land O'Lakes, which brings you butter, milk and cheese, is also a farmer-owned cooperative with 2,000 dairy producers, 1,000 retailers and 300,000 farmers.“Having one farmer connected is not enough,” Bekele said, “you’ve got to have the whole community connected and if you think about bringing technology, it’s not just the household. We want the whole field.”He says drone footage bringing you data about your fields does not work if you don't have internet.“We’ve been working on a lot of novel solutions to bring to farmers, things from remote sensing, satellite and drone images to using crop models that use machine learning capabilities to help farmers make better decisions as well as a platform that helps with sustainability,” Bekele said.Farmers know so much about land. Technology will take the guesswork out of the farming industry. Things like how much you should water, when and where mapped out by data.“One of the things we’re building is a digital dairy platform, bringing different dairy management tools into one umbrella. More than six months into the COVID-19 pandemic, industry experts say the new convenience of ordering groceries through an app is here to stay. "In fact, it's been a huge acceleration. All of our clients that we serve, and we serve some of the biggest supermarkets in North America and the world, they picked up three times the volume that they were doing before this pandemic. And, in fact, more of them didn’t picked up more volume because they couldn't just fulfill enough orders at a time," said Max Pedro, the co-founder and president of Takeoff Technologies. Takeoff Technologies creates automated grocery fulfillment software for some of the biggest grocery chains in the country, including Albertsons, Safeway and Shoprite. The technology requires supermarkets to build a 10,000-square-foot warehouse directly behind their store. When a shopper places an online grocery order at one of these stores, the robots fulfill the order, automatically placing the items in bags, ready for the customer."What happens is those robots bring those individual items to a human being, but those items are coming to a person. They're suddenly making people 13 times more productive than if they have to roam a supermarket aisle to assemble that order," said Pedro.The company has already hit their five-year goal in just four months. "And it’s happened really fast and what’s also happening is we know that consumers are not going back to their previous behaviors. We forcefully trained many, many people to buy their supermarket carts online and they're sticking to it," said Pedro.Laurentia Romaniuk, an Instacart Trends Expert, agrees. "We've seen customers continue to use our site. It seems like online grocery is really here to stay. It's interesting because online grocery has existed in other countries for decades and people have built habits around it in other countries and I think, finally, now America is getting on board with the online grocery trend," said Romaniuk.Instacart, which offers grocery delivery service for a fee from a number of grocery stores across the country, says use of their site went up exponentially at the start of the pandemic. Now that we're in the fall, parents and children are still working and taking classes from home and the need to get groceries delivered or gathered for them, is still there. "Yes, customers are going online and shopping online and becoming more comfortable with that, but also hobbies and habits and eating patterns are changing," said Romaniuk.Pedro says pre-pandemic, only 10% of the market was buying online. It's now grown to 27%. "Remind you that four years ago, the U.S. market was half-a-percent online. Grocery is a really rough category to offer online and still maintain those low prices. Now, with these capabilities and that further need of getting the convenience factor, things have just taken off," said Pedro.
