India has successfully launched a mission to soft land a rover on the moon, in a landmark moment for a nation trying to become a space superpower. The country's latest lunar mission, Chandrayaan-2, which means "moon vehicle" in Sanskrit, took off from the Satish Dhawan Space Center at Sriharikota in Andhra Pradesh state at 2:43 p.m., Monday local time (5:13 am ET).The launch was originally scheduled for July 15, but was abruptly called off just 56 minutes before lift-off due to a "technical snag." India is now on the way to becoming the fourth country -- in addition to United States, China and the former Soviet Union -- to make a soft-landing on the lunar surface. The Chandrayaan-2, which weighs 3.8 tons and carries 13 payloads, has three elements -- lunar orbiter, lander and rover, all developed by the Indian Space Research Organization (ISRO).It will travel for two months, before positioning itself in a circular orbit 62 miles (100km) above the moon's surface. From there, the lander -- named Vikram after the pioneer of the Indian space program Vikram Sarabhai -- will separate from the main vessel and gently land on the moon's surface near its South Pole.A robotic rover named Pragyan (meaning "wisdom") will then deploy and spend one lunar day, or 14 Earth days, collecting mineral and chemical samples from the moon's surface for remote scientific analysis.Over the next year, the orbiter will map the lunar surface and study the outer atmosphere of the moon.Kailasavadivoo Sivan, ISRO chairman, said in June that the last 15 minutes of the landing "are going to be the most terrifying moments for us."As well as coinciding with the 50th anniversary of the Apollo moon landing, the launch comes as other space agencies revisit the idea of sending humans to the moon and beyond -- NASA has touted a bold plan to return American astronauts to the moon by 2024.India's space ambitionsThis mission is significant for India -- the country wants to become a major space player and put Indian astronauts in space by 2022."India wants to show, especially since Prime Minister (Narendra) Modi came into office, that India is a major power, and that India has to be treated as a major Indo-Pacific power," said Rajeswari Pillai Rajagopalan, head of the nuclear and space policy initiative at the Observer Research Foundation.Chandrayaan-1, India's maiden lunar mission, discovered water molecules on the surface of the moon. As part of that mission, an impact probe crashed into the moon's south polar region in a controlled landing.India's attempted soft-landing is a far greater technical challenge than the controlled crash of Chandrayaan-1.The two Chandrayaan missions are a precursor to Chandrayaan-3, which is scheduled to make a return mission to the moon in 2023-2024.In 2014, India became the first Asian nation to reach the Red Planet, when it put the Mangalyaan probe into orbit around Mars. The Mars Orbiter Mission famously cost million -- less than the 0 million than Hollywood spent making space thriller "Gravity."In 2017, India 3072

It sounds like a scene from a monster movie.Children from a church group were playing in a creek in West Alexandria, Ohio, on Wednesday evening when one of their leaders spotted a 7-foot-long crocodile swimming nearby. There were 16 kids -- all first- through sixth-graders -- playing in Bantas Fork Creek, and adults were in the water and on a small bridge to keep an eye on them, according to Rick Turnbull, who helps teach the children.Another adult "saw something in the water, a shadowy object moving, and he yelled down to the person on that side of the bridge and shouted 'get the kids out of the water,' " Turnbull said.Rich Denius was in the water with one of his sons and helped get the children to safety."Give Jesus all the glory for protecting these kids," Denius said. The crocodile was about 20 feet away by the time everyone got out of the creek. Turnbull said it swam right under the bridge they were standing on."He wasn't afraid of us. He swam under it, popped his head up and looked at us," he said.A wildlife officer was called in and shot the animal. Turnbull said the kids had been taken out of the area before that happened. It was probably a petCrocodiles are not native to Ohio, and the state's veterinarian said it was probably a pet that someone dumped when it got too big."This was the first sighting, so he probably hadn't been in there very long," Dr. Tony Forshey said. The crocodile was 7? feet long and weighed 171 pounds, he said.Forshey said officials scanned the animal for a microchip ID but didn't find one, and there weren't any signs of other crocodiles in the area. It's an unforgettable lessonTurnbull said the church group takes the children down to the creek a couple of times each summer, when the water's warm, to study nature as part of their religious lessons. On Wednesday, they discussed how some fish will gather together near a light source to protect themselves from predators."It was wild that we'd had a lesson about predators lurking in the shadows," he said.West Alexandria is about 20 miles west of Dayton, so they also talked about the need to be aware of their surroundings -- especially after last week's shooting in a popular Dayton nightlife district.Turnbull also stressed the importance of obeying people in authority, which really paid off because when the time came, the children climbed out of the creek without complaint."It's a lesson that these kids will never forget," he said. 2456

Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg revealed Tuesday that she traveled with retired Justice John Paul Stevens "in the last week of his life" to Lisbon, Portugal, for a conference where the two justices attended meetings, visited museums, vineyards and castles."Perhaps he knew at age 99, distant travel was a risk," Ginsburg said during Stevens' funeral at Arlington National Cemetery, "but he wanted to experience fully the joys of being alive, and he did just that almost to the end."Ginsburg, 86, said that as the "next eldest in attendance" she had the opportunity to ride with him on long drives and his mind "remained vibrant" and he spoke not only of court cases but footnotes in various opinions."His conversation was engaging, his memory amazing," she said. As they were leaving the US ambassador's residence during their last evening in Lisbon, Ginsburg told Stevens, "My dream is to remain on the court as long as you did."His immediate response, she said, was "Stay longer!"Justice Sonia Sotomayor also accompanied her colleagues on the trip which was hosted by New York University. The event was from July 8-12.Stevens died in Florida on the evening of July 16, according to a press release from the court, after suffering a stroke on July 15. The release did not say where Stevens was when he fell ill.Ginsburg talked about his approach to the law and his willingness to continue "learning on the job." She also mentioned that on the 30th anniversary of his appointment to the court, President Gerald Ford wrote a letter praising his nominee.A day after laying in repose at the Supreme Court, Stevens -- a World War II veteran -- was buried in a private ceremony. According to a court spokeswoman, there was a Navy casket team, a firing team and a bugler.Stevens served in the United States Navy from 1942 to 1945 and was awarded the Bronze Star for his service on a codebreaking team. The private service -- closed to the press -- was also attended by Stevens' former clerks. On Monday, 70 of them lined the stairs of the Supreme Court as the casket was carried to the Great Hall for a day of mourning. The clerks took turns standing vigil as visitors, including President Donald Trump, stopped by to pay their respects. At Tuesday's private funeral, David Barron, who served as a clerk during the 1995-96 term and is now a judge on the 1st US Circuit Court of Appeals, called his former boss "unassuming" but "supremely competent.""He believed fiercely in independence, in not going along with the crowd, in stating your own views no matter how distinctive, and in the capacity of the country to handle disagreement, even strong disagreement, and to learn from it, if respectfully offered and respectfully received," Barron said.Another eulogy was delivered by Stevens' granddaughter, Hannah Mullen, who said that he was the "great Justice, the great man" but that he was also "the greatest grandpa in the world.""He was the kind of grandpa who taught us how to catch lightning bugs," she said, adding that he used his anti-trust skills to try to "trounce" his grandson John in Monopoly. She spoke about his career, his big dissents and the opinions he wrote that no other justice joined."I hope like him, we remain graceful in victory and undaunted in defeat -- brave enough to dissent and, if no one will join us, brave enough to dissent alone," she said. 3374
