As the coronavirus pandemic surges across the nation and infections and hospitalizations rise, medical administrators are scrambling to find enough nursing help — especially in rural areas and at small hospitals.Nurses are being trained to provide care in fields where they have limited experience. Hospitals are scaling back services to ensure enough staff to handle critically ill patients. And health systems are turning to short-term travel nurses to help fill the gaps.Adding to the strain, experienced nurses are “burned out with this whole (pandemic)” and some are quitting, said Kevin Fitzpatrick, an emergency room nurse at Hurley Medical Center in Flint, Michigan, where several left just in the past month to work in hospice or home care or at outpatient clinics.“And replacing them is not easy,” Fitzpatrick said.As a result, he said, the ER is operating at about five nurses short of its optimal level at any given time, and each one typically cares for four patients as COVID-19 hospitalizations surge anew. Hospital officials did not respond to requests for comment.But the departures are not surprising, according to experts, considering not only the mental toll but the fact that many nurses trained in acute care are over 50 and at increased risk of complications if they contract COVID-19, while younger nurses often have children or other family to worry about.“Who can actually work and who feels safe working are limited by family obligations to protect their own health,” said Karen Donelan, professor of U.S. health policy at Brandeis University’s Heller School for Social Policy and Management. “All of those things have been factors.”Donelan said there is little data so far on how the pandemic, which has killed more than 231,000 people in the country, is affecting nursing overall. But some hospitals had a shortage even before the virus took hold, despite a national rise in the number of nurses over the past decade.With total confirmed coronavirus cases surpassing 9 million in the U.S. and new daily infections rising in 47 states, the need is only increasing.Wausau, Wisconsin-based Aspirus Health Care is offering ,000 signing bonuses for nurses with at least a year of experience and hiring contract nurses through private staffing companies to handle a surge in hospitalizations that prompted the system to almost quadruple the number of beds dedicated to COVID-19 patients.Aspirus, which operates five hospitals in Wisconsin and four in small communities in Michigan’s Upper Peninsula, also is moving nurses around between departments and facilities as hot spots emerge, said Ruth Risley-Gray, senior vice president and chief nursing officer at Aspirus.Outside help still is needed, in part because some nurses have gotten sick from or were exposed to the cornavirus during the current wave, which “came with a vengeance” starting in August, Risley-Gray said. At one point in mid-October, 215 staffers were in isolation after showing symptoms or being exposed to someone who tested positive, and some are just starting to return to work.Aspirus recently was able to hire 18 nurses from outside agencies, and may need more if the surge continues.Because the pandemic is surging just about everywhere in the country, hospitals nationwide are competing for the same pool of nurses, offering pay ranging from ,500 a week to more than ,000, said April Hansen, executive vice president at San Diego-based Aya Healthcare, which recruits and deploys travel nurses.She said demand for their services has more than doubled since early in the pandemic when the greatest need was in hot spots like New York and New Jersey and then moved to southern states. In recent weeks the virus has been spiking across the country, with the new hot spots in places like the rural upper Midwest and southern-border communities such as El Paso, Texas.Now placing nurses where they’re needed is “like a giant game of whack-a-mole,” said Hansen, whose company has about 20,000 openings for contract nurses.In North Dakota, where infection rates are exploding, hospitals may cut back on elective surgeries and seek government aid to hire more nurses if things get worse, North Dakota Hospital Association president Tim Blasl said.In Texas, Gov. Greg Abbott recently announced he was sending 75 nurses and respiratory therapists to El Paso to help handle the city’s surge. Wisconsin Gov. Tony Evers, meanwhile, issued emergency orders making it easier for nurses from elsewhere to practice in his state and for retired nurses to come back.“This has been a challenge, and we’ve been pleading with the community members to protect themselves and others,” by wearing masks and social distancing, said Aspirus’ Risley-Gray, who said the positivity rate among community members tested by Aspirus rose from under 10% in September to 24% last week.To combat the emotional toll and fatigue that comes with caring for COVID-19 patients, including just donning and removing protective equipment all day, Aspirus has been giving nurses microbreaks and quiet places to get away and collect themselves when they feel overwhelmed.Travel nurses say the need at small hospitals tends to be greater than at larger facilities.Robert Gardner, who’s currently assigned to a hospital in a small town about 20 miles west of Atlanta, said he did search and rescue in the Coast Guard during Hurricane Katrina and the pandemic is “a lot worse.”He worked at a large New Jersey hospital when that state was swamped by the virus in the spring, and now worries that flu season could bring further chaos to hospitals. Divorced, he had turned to date apps Skout and Meet Me to fill that emotional void and met Brandy Bowens from Canada. It seemed like an innocent relationship for a while, but then she started asking him to be the middle man for her "art business"."By me already being invested in our conversations and our online relationships, I kind of felt it was okay for me to do these things that they wanted," said D.So he started getting money transferred to his bank account that he would then send out in cashiers checks."I had received three wire transfers of over 0,000 and these monies they claimed were for their business," said D. It kept adding up... and then she asked for his money.It all came to a head last month when he got a call from the FBI saying it was all a scam; his ,000 was gone."It's hard. I lost the money and it messed up everything in a financial way for me. I'm trying to build my credit back, just so much that that has screwed up for me," said D.FBI Special Agent Jeffrey Reising said these scams are even more common now during the pandemic because criminals are taking advantage of government programs like unemployment and funneling the money through romance scam victims, like D."Just red flags, like 'Why am I getting unemployment in other people's names in my account? Why am I getting tens of thousands of dollars in my account'?" said Reising.Other red flags to look for are if they can never meet in person, or even answer phone calls, if they don’t have a real voicemail or if they ask for your bank account."Why can I not talk to this person face to face using some of the technology available? Why can’t I interact? Why is all of our communication on a text?" said Reising.It’s red flags D saw, but the scammer could explain away."Saying 'my phone is broke' or 'my camera doesn’t work'," said D.Now he’s sharing his story, hoping that especially during this virtual time, he can stop others from falling victim."Be cautious. If you get that flag, if you don’t get the answer for that flag, then you need to leave it alone," said D. At a time when people across the country are calling to defund the police, or outright abolish them, convincing others to make a career in law enforcement could be a tough sell.For Cameron Mosher, however, the decision to put on the badge for a living is an easy one.“For me, it’s always been an urge to serve my community,” he said.Mosher is training to be a deputy sheriff at the Orange County Sheriff’s Regional Training Academy in Southern California.“I want to try to be that positive change in law enforcement to try to help and move forward with this career,” he said.Moving forward and maintaining order as the country deals with a pandemic and social unrest.“I have a brother in St. Louis, Missouri, not too far from Ferguson, and we’ve had some interesting debates over the last five or so years,” said Lt. Joses Walehwa, who is helping train a new group of recruits at the Orange County Sheriff’s Regional Training Academy.Walehwa says his team is preparing the next generation of law enforcement officer for much more than traffic stops and arrests.“As an African American, or really any minority group here in America, has a unique perspective when it comes to just their lived experience growing up,” he said. “I think for me, the biggest impact is bridging the gap. You know, bridging this issue of us versus them.”Walehwa says another huge impact when it comes to recruiting is the economy.“When the economy starts to dip, you see that people start to look for stable jobs,” he said. “Law enforcement and public sector and jobs like ours become a little bit more appealing because people see the stability of the job.”A job where despite a pension and a mean annual wage of more ,600 (Bureau of Labor Statistics), there’s still a major need for more sheriff’s deputies across the country.A recent report from the Police Executive Research Forum shows 36% of respondents said the number of applicants at their agency has “decreased significantly.”For recruits like Mosher, however, working in law enforcement means much more than money. It’s about building trust in his community while also addressing new challenges and raising the standards of law enforcement officers.“We see definitely a lot of people who are not necessarily supportive of law enforcement right now,” he said. “But in the end, that’s totally OK, because we’re here to support everyone. Authorities have identified the body of a young boy found at a New Mexico compound as Abdul-Ghani Wahhaj, a missing 3-year-old who was allegedly abducted by his father in November, according to the state's Office of the Medical Investigator.The boy's remains were discovered a few days after authorities first raided the makeshift compound earlier this month and discovered 11 emaciated children wearing rags and no shoes.Abdul-Ghani, who would have turned 4 the day his body was discovered, had been missing since last November, when his father, 40-year-old Siraj Wahhaj, allegedly took him from his mother in Jonesboro, Georgia, and said they were going to a park.They never returned.New Mexico authorities suspected the boy and his father were at the compound after learning about the abduction in May, according to the Taos County sheriff, but didn't have enough evidence for a search warrant. 915

  

AURORA, Colo. — Police detained and handcuffed a Black mother and four children after mistaking their SUV for a stolen motorcycle from another state.It happened in the parking lot of a shopping center off of Buckley Road and East Iliff Ave. Sunday morning."Why are you now placing these children on the ground face into the concrete? It's hot! In front of all of us? Screaming at them. They are telling you they are hurt," witness Jenni Wurtz said.Wurtz recorded the incident along with several other witnesses.She says a police car slowly pulled behind the family. The officer drew their weapon on the family and ordered them out of the car. Several of the children were handcuffed."That makes me very mad because I am not anti-police. I'm anti- what happened yesterday, and that was ridiculous," Wurtz said.The car the family was driving was not stolen. Police used a license plate scanner to gather information on vehicles in the area. They should have been looking for a motorcycle with the same plate from another state.Interim Aurora Police Chief Vanessa Wilson blamed the license plate reader, but could not explain why the dozens of officers who responded did not confirm the vehicle description."I totally understand that anger, and don't want to diminish that anger, but I will say it wasn't a profiling incident. It was a hit that came through the system, and they have a picture of the vehicle the officers saw," Wilson said, defending her officers' actions.After officers realized the mistake, the family was uncuffed, but more officers continued to arrive. Video shows more than a dozen officers standing around the traumatized family."I do not think a stolen vehicle is worth traumatizing the lives of children. On top of that, I was 20-feet away with a drawn gun. They didn't even tell me to move, secure the scene. They didn't do anything," Wurtz said.Wurtz filed a complaint with internal affairs. She believes the police department's policy needs to change.By Monday evening, an internal investigation was underway following the incident, according to Wilson. She released the following statement on Monday."We first want to offer our apologies to the family involved in the traumatic incident involving a police stop of their vehicle yesterday. We have been training our officers that when they contact a suspected stolen car, they should do what is called a high-risk stop. This involves drawing their weapons and ordering all occupants to exit the car and lie prone on the ground. But we must allow our officers to have discretion and to deviate from this process when different scenarios present themselves. I have already directed my team to look at new practices and training. I have called the family to apologize and to offer any help we can provide, especially for the children who may have been traumatized by yesterday's events. I have reached out to our victim advocates so we can offer age-appropriate therapy that the city will cover."Sunday's incident comes as the Aurora Police Department faces continued criticism over its handling of the death of Elijah McClain.
