SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - San Diego Police released Monday the name of a man who was shot and killed in Paradise Hills.911 dispatchers got a call about a shooting in the 2400 block of Calle Gaviota Friday about 10:30 p.m., police said.Officers went to the location and found Dustin Bridwell, 37, suffering from a gunshot wound to his torso. Bridwell was taken to the hospital, where he died.San Diego Police detectives who went to the scene learned Bridwell went outside just before the gunshots were fired.A witness reported seeing a man wearing dark clothing running from the area after the shots were fired.Anyone with information is asked to call the SDPD Homicide Unit at 619-531-2293 or Crime Stoppers at 888-580-8477. 725

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - San Diego winemakers say business is picking up, and there's a new way to for locals to get their foot in the door. A new report by the San Diego County Vintners Association says there are now 116 wineries in the region, with sales nearly doubling in the last year. The industry now has about 700 workers in the county. Now, the association has teamed up with Cuyamaca College for a Viticulture Technician Apprenticeship program. Participants work 1,500 hours a year, learning the ins and outs of winemaking. They earn an hour the first year and the second, with opportunities to make more doing side jobs once they get enough experience. "You can't really sell wine unless you know where it's coming from and what goes into it, creating the story behind the wine itself," said Kaylan Wedemeyer, who is an apprentice for La Mesa's San Pasqual Winery.Linda McWilliams, who owns San Pasqual, said many local wineries are mom and pops, but that apprentices can also grow with them."I think we'll find places for the people who graduate, and then we'll build together," she said. The program is accepting applications ahead of interviews in December, and January starts.  1227

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- Several San Diego County schools are being honored as part of the 2020 California Distinguished Schools Award Program. The program recognizes schools based on performance and progress on state indicators. Those indicators include test scores, suspension rates and conditions and climate, according to the State Superintendent. Schools hold their titles for two years because elementary schools and middle and high schools are recognized on alternate years. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- Some students in the San Diego Unified School District are being allowed to return to campus Tuesday as the district begins the first phase of its reopening plan.The district began the 2020-21 school year on Aug. 31 with a distance learning program for its students. In recent weeks, during the distance learning period, teachers have been working to determine which students they believe would benefit from appointment-based in-person learning sessions.Appointment sessions will be voluntary; the rest of the time, those students will continue with distance learning.SD Unified officials said they’ve also been working with health experts in designing a reopening plan that would ensure all students and staff are safe.Despite the reopening plan, there are some parents who still do not believe it’s enough.On Tuesday afternoon, a group of parents called Reopen SDUSD has scheduled a rally at 4 p.m. in front of the Board of Education building to voice their concerns about the reopening plan.The group, which held a similar rally last month, is calling for a more detailed reopening plan and they want the district to be more transparent.Reopen SDUSD has gathered thousands of signatures for a petition urging the district to allow more students to return to campus.ABC 10News spoke with some parents at the September rally who said they want options because distance learning is not working for them.One mother said her children “dread going on Zoom. They dread being on the computer. They don’t like learning via the screen. They’re just losing a lot of interest, and I end up having to yell at them, ‘Do your work!’ And it’s frustrating because it impacts our relationship in a negative way.” 1725
