According to a new study from job search company Monster, 8 out of 10 people have cried at work, which means the other two are either lying or wait to have their existential crises in the parking lot.Why are so many darkened conference rooms being stained with the secret tears of a disconsolate workforce? Monster's poll of 3,000 workers found that 45% of respondents who admitted to crying said it was because of their bosses or co-workers. Only 19% of respondents who had cried said that personal, non-work issues were the reason for the teardrops on their keyboards. Now, eight working hours is an entire third of each day, so some of your unscheduled crying time is bound to fall in that window. But while crying at work may be statistically inevitable, it also raises a lot of concerns about workload and workplace dynamics. More than 15% of work weepers said they cried because of workload, while almost 13% said they were upset over workplace bullying."When you cry at work, that's a sign of a toxic environment," Monster career expert Vicki Salemi said in response to the study. "There are numerous jobs out there where you will be doing the opposite, feeling happy and accomplished."Despite the fact that a majority of people have most likely let it flow at work, crying in the workplace is still a very taboo and divisive subject. There a good reason: Unless you're a soap opera actor or Tammy Faye Bakker, crying isn't in most job descriptions. In the past few years, more attention to employee wellness and workplace culture has softened the view on professionally shed tears. Even a recent bout of emotionalism on the 2020 presidential campaign trail raised the issue of crying on the political stage. Experts like CNN's Chris Cillizza say genuine shows of emotion are important to remind us that, whether behind the podium or our standing desk, we're all human. "We, collectively, need more empathy, more humanity and more authenticity in our world -- and especially in our politics," he says.Whether that will help the person softly snuffling in the last bathroom stall because their expense report got returned for a third time isn't clear. But at the very least, they can take comfort in the knowledge that they are, statistically, not alone. 2270

Actor Kevin Spacey appeared at a Nantucket courthouse and a plea of not guilty was entered on his behalf, in connection with accusations that he allegedly groped an 18-year-old busboy at a bar on the island.Spacey, the 59-year-old Hollywood actor, was arraigned on a charge of indecent assault and battery, a felony charge that comes with up to five years in prison.Prosecutors asked that he stay away from the alleged victim and his family, and the court agreed. Defense attorneys asked the court to preserve cell phone data and other text messages from the victim from the date of the incident until six months afterward, which defense attorneys said would be "likely exculpatory" for Spacey. The next court appearance is scheduled for March 4. The judge agreed to waive Spacey's right to appear at that hearing at the downtown Nantucket courthouse, but he must be reachable by phone. The charge stems from an incident in July 2016 at the Club Car, a restaurant and bar on Nantucket. American Airlines has apologized to a woman who says she was humiliated after being told she couldn't fly unless she covered up her romper.Latisha "Tisha" Rowe said she and her son were boarding a flight from Kingston, Jamaica, to Miami, Florida, on June 30 when a male flight attendant asked them to step off the plane to talk, her attorney, Geoffrey Berg, told CNN.A female flight attendant then told Rowe that she would not be allowed to fly unless she covered herself, Berg said. Her thighs and arms were exposed in the strapless romper.Rowe said the employee asked if she had a jacket, and ended up giving her a blanket to wrap around herself, Berg said.Rowe tweeted about her experience and shared a picture of the outfit she was wearing."Here is what i was wearing when @AmericanAir asked me to deplane for a talk. At which point I was asked to "cover up". When defending my outfit I was threatened with not getting back on the flight unless I walked down the aisle wrapped in a blanket. #notsofriendlyskies," she wrote."My shorts covered EVERYTHING but apparently was too distracting to enter the plane," 1125

A member of the Minneapolis City Council revealed this week that he and several other council members are working on finding out what it would take to disband the Minneapolis Police Department. The announcement from Councilmember Steve Fletcher comes a week after George Floyd died while in police custody in Minneapolis. During an appearance on CNN on Wednesday, he called the city’s police department “ungovernable.”"The department is ungovernable,” Fletcher said. “Chief (Medaria) Arradondo is a leader that we've all had very high hopes in and that I imagined could play a role in envisioning the next version of public safety. But he has clearly not been able to make the culture change happen that we were hoping for and investing in.”What it would take to disband the department is unclear. But what is clear is that the department is already seeing a reduced role in the protection of the city. On Wednesday, the Minneapolis Park Board voted to terminate its relationship with the department, and the Minneapolis Police will no longer be involved in guarding events on park property.Fletcher said in a Twitter post that it’s time to “declare policing as we know it a thing of the past.”“Our city needs a public safety capacity that doesn’t fear our residents,” Fletcher said. “That doesn’t need a gun at a community meeting. That considers itself part of our community. That doesn’t resort quickly to pepper spray when people are understandably angry. That doesn’t murder black men.”Despite tensions among the community, a number of leaders from the black community spoke up to defend Arradondo, according to 1629
