As businesses continue to gradually reopen, visiting some may come with more risk of coronavirus exposure than others.Dr. Daliah Wachs broke down the COVID-19 exposure risk of various establishments.Medium risk for COVID-19 exposure are places like hair and nail salons, according to Dr. Wachs.“You’re right there up in their face, waxing their eyebrows, you can’t do that 6 feet social distancing,” said Dr. Wachs.According to new COVID-19 guidelines from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, people should wait in their car until their hair or nail appointment, and to pay by phone.Medium risk of exposure locations also includes sit-down restaurants, grocery stores and the doctor’s office, according to Dr. Wachs.Dr. Wachs says a doctor’s office can pose a danger due to a higher concentration of sick people being in one place.Inching closer to the highest risk locations are spots like bars, casinos and gyms.“You’re exhaling a lot, so gyms need that extra social distancing, much more than six feet,” said Dr. Daliah.The CDC advises those in gyms to wipe down equipment with disinfecting wipes, and to wear a mask if the workout is low intensity.When it comes to high risk of exposure, Dr. Wachs says parents should be mindful of day care facilities.Another high-risk spot is the Department of Motor Vehicles, according to Dr. Wachs.“You start to come up on the person ahead of you, you almost mentally try to move yourself closer. Anthony Mele was dining at a steakhouse in Southern California with his daughter on his lap when a homeless man allegedly walked up to him Wednesday and stabbed him in the neck.Jamal Jackson, 49, was arrested shortly after the attack in Ventura and has been charged with premeditated first -degree murder, the Ventura County District Attorney's Office said.Mele died the next day, but his daughter was not injured. Animals have been used as therapy for years, because research has linked them to a decrease in anxiety and depression in pet parents.It is sometimes referred to as the "Pet Effect" by experts and described this way by Mental Health America:"The Pet Effect, also known as the human-animal bond, is the mutually beneficial relationship between people and animals that positively impacts the health and well-being of both. Any pet owner will tell you that living with a pet comes with benefits, including constant companionship, love and affection."A 2016 survey by the Human Animal Bond Research Institute found that nearly 75% of the animal owners they talked with reported mental health improvements from their furry family member.With a global pandemic keeping many of us isolated, is now the time to adopt a pet?"I adopted Sake from the Arizona Humane Society on July 1," said Scottsdale dog owner Randi Chan.Chan said she immediately brought a dog trainer into the mix and created a structured routine, something she did not have just a few months ago."Before I had her, I was probably working like 12 hours every day," Chan said. "Because... I'll take a break for dinner and then I'll be like, 'Well I have nothing better to do. I've already watched everything on Netflix, so I'll guess I'll start working again.'"She knew that likely was not very positive for her mental health.Now, Chan gets fluffy hugs and a reason to get outside safely for their walks."If anything, the pandemic has just raised awareness to the importance of both adoption and fostering," said Arizona Humane Society's Bretta Nelson.They have moved to appointment-only for their adoptions. Once a prospective pet parent sets up their time slot, a representative from the shelter will call them ahead of time to go over what animals they may be interested in."We think with this one-on-one match-making process, you can talk to people about a pet's medical or their behavioral, and they weren't already attached before learning that information," Nelson explained. "So, they were able to make a logical decision."That has helped their return rate for pets drastically decrease, while the number of families fostering has sky-rocketed.However, most people will have to return to work at some point and the pets will have to be left behind.Nelson said that a structured routine that is created the first time they come home will make that transition easier."Set a routine that's going to work, even when you're back at work," Nelson said. As a jazz musician who’s traveled the world with some of the best-known artists in the industry, your first assumption might be that Daryl Davis’ claim to fame is from being on stage. But the African American racial justice activist is better known for the work he’s done over the years helping Ku Klux Klan members leave behind a life of racism and white supremacy.It started back in the early 1990s when Davis arranged a meeting with a former wizard of the KKK. At the time, he did not know Davis was Black.Over the years, the two forged an unlikely relationship with one another. Davis would regularly be invited to Klan rallies across the country. He didn’t agree with their message, but he wasn’t there to join the Klan, he was there to help persuade members’ opinions on race.“You have ignorance and if you don’t cure that ignorance, that turns into fear because we fear things we don’t understand and if you don’t turn that fear, it escalates to hatred, because we hate the things that frighten us,” the 64-year-old explained.Having spent decades with members of the KKK, Davis doesn’t argue or even get frustrated with those he meets. Instead, Davis tries to plant a seed that he nurtures and helps grow over time. That seed, he says, is breaking down barriers that exist between KKK members and African Americans.As Davis spends time getting to known Klan members, he says that over time, many start to see him for more than the color of his skin, they see him as human.“If you have cancer in the bone, you can’t rub topical cream on top, you have to drill to the bone and put chemo or radiation to the source. And that’s what we have to do with racism. Go to the source, which is ignorance. It’s not inherited, it’s a learned behavior,” he said.To date, Davis has helped more than 200 Klan members leave the white supremacist group. Many send Davis their robes after they abandon the KKK. But Davis is quick to note that he never convinces anyone to leave.“I didn’t convert anybody, but I am the impetus for over 200 people to convert themselves. I planted the seed so they could come to the conclusion that, ‘I might need to be rethinking what I’m thinking,’” he added.As for the current state of racial unrest gripping the country, Davis sees this as a moment of reckoning where real institutional change on racism is possible.“We have never had this many white people join in our cause. This is a major change. We are turning another page in the history of this country and we have not turned a page in a long time,” said Davis. 2549

To give free digital skills to 25 million people.Representatives from Microsoft and Linkedin admit it was, and still is, an ambitious initiative to reach that many people and to target the digital space and help get people the skills they need to work in our new and changed world.“It has really been a challenging time for so many people and there are things people can do to upscale we all really need to learn new skills everyday” says Naria Santa Lucia, general manager of digital inclusion at Microsoft Philanthropies.Part of her job is to help people get a job. She says the program has reached people all over the world, and all over the nation.“We’ve seen a great uptick from states like California, Texas, NY, Florida, Illinois, Virginia, Washington DC- but every single state has had a learner,” Santa Lucia said.Santa Lucia highlights people who quit their job hoping for more opportunity, right before the shutdown.The learning path on LinkedIn offers interview help, critical skills, and collaboration tools.Santa Lucia recalled someone who left their job before the pandemic who was able to find work.“He decided it was time to try something new,” Santa Lucia said. “He came upon the content and was able to supplement the technical background with the customer service skills to enhance his resume and become more attractive to employers and has landed a temporary position and is really looking forward to parlaying that into full time employment after the role concludes."Guy Berger is the principal economist at LinkedIn.“I’m pretty optimistic we’ll find our way out of this pandemic and even if we don’t, we’ll find ways of working around it more and more jobs will be online friendly or social distancing friendly,” Berger said.Berger and his team just finished the workforce report for October. They tracked labor trends, who's been hired, where people are working, and where they're moving, Berger said.“These reports in the late spring were pretty glum, hiring in the United States was down something like 40% compared to where it was a year ago. That’s huge,” Berger said. “We’ve never seen that big of a drop in our data in the last few years. But the good news: if you look at these reports… they’re improved we’re in a much better place.”The report shows that places like Austin, Texas, and Charlotte, North Carolina, are gaining the most people.
