SAN DIEGO -- The San Diego Planning Commission advanced a plan Thursday that would make the Midway District more vibrant by adding housing, commercial projects and parks.The plan would grow the area’s housing from 2,000 to 11,000 over the next 20 years. Business development in the area would also generate a similar number of jobs.The district would also boast nearly 30 acres of parks. "We think it's an important opportunity to provide for the park needs of the community," project manager Vickie White said.The parks would all fit into an improved pedestrian and bile network that would make use of existing transit infrastructure. The city hopes the network would reduce the area’s reliance on cars."We're focused on creating comfortable connections along transit corridors to make this a more appealing area to walk or bike -- we see a lot off opportunities for modal increase in this area," White said.Reducing reliance on cars also complies with a citywide climate action plan. "If there's one real, glaring problem with this community it's a lack of connectivity from district to district," Commissioner William Hofman said.The area around sports arena and Valley View Casino Center would also get additional streets and paths.The plan includes a variety of possibilities for the sports arena including operating it as is or demolishing it and pushing for other land-use opportunities.The plan will now go to the City Council’s Smart Growth and Land Use Committee in May. 1493

SAN DIEGO (CNS) - A group of San Diego high school seniors will be honored with other students from throughout Southern California Friday at the second annual Pacific Islander High School Graduate Recognition Ceremony in San Bernardino.Long Beach, Inland Empire and other surrounding regions will participate in the event, which will include cultural celebrations like a Polynesian fireknife performance and a Maori warrior dance.Siaosi Veimau, who immigrated to the U.S. from Tonga at age 10, will serve as the ceremony's keynote speaker. Veimau currently runs a Pacific Islander cultural group with his wife and San Diego State University's Pacific Islander Student Association.``My vision for every student is to discover who they are and to be intentional about their dreams and passions,'' Veimau said. ``Our Pacific Islander roots keep us grounded. But the producers feared that he would bail, and sure enough, he stopped responding to messages on Tuesday morning. "He went dark," one of the sources said. His company invented the first automated gene printer. "We use that system actually to print genes. Genes are made of little building blocks that you've heard of, and we use that to rapidly, and in an automated fashion, print genes that researchers can use around the world for vaccine development. "We're basically taking an entire laboratory of researchers that are doing various things, and we put it in a box," said Nelson.Researchers are using the printer to write the genes of the coronavirus."Even a nasty little thing like the coronavirus has its own genes, and there are certain genes that make that amenable to being a vaccine, and we know what those are so we put the information into the system, and we push a button and about 8 hours later that potential gene comes out ," said Nelson.
